But the competitors are worried that Telecom's rapid deployment of cabinetisation will undermine their new-found access at exchanges.

ISP appeals Torrent-blocking decision

WASHINGTON - Comcast Corp. is appealing regulators' ruling that the company is improperly blocking customers' web traffic, triggering a legal battle that could determine the extent of the government's authority to regulate the internet.

In a precedent-setting move, a divided Federal Communications Commission last month determined that the company is violating a federal policy that guarantees unfettered access to the internet.

Broadband plans push Telecom to suspend shares-for-dividend scheme

Telecom has halted its dividend reinvestment plan and on-market share buyback while it evaluates accelerating the delivery of broadband services.

Telecom shares fell 3c to $3.09 around noon after the announcement. The shares are down from $4.63 in October last year.

Nothing to cheer about for Yahoo as stocks plummet

SAN FRANCISCO - Yahoo's stock has sunk to its lowest level in nearly five years, magnifying the challenge facing the internet company as its management tries to justify their rebuff of Microsoft's $47.5 billion takeover bid.

Shares plummeted US$1.01, or 5.4 per cent to close at $17.75 - a price unseen since October 2003.

Sony recalls laptops due to possible overheating

TOKYO - Sony announced today it is recalling 440,000 Vaio laptop computers worldwide due to a wiring flaw that could cause overheating.

Sony said the recall involves 19 models in the Vaio TZ series manufactured between May 2007 and July 2008.

NY teen arrested after Facebook threat

NEW YORK - A teenage student accused of posting a threat against her school on her social-networking web page was just trying to prolong her summer break, her lawyer said.

The student, Tiffany Spatafora, 16, spent the first day of her senior year in police custody and court instead. She was released without bail after pleading not guilty to misdemeanour charges of aggravated harassment and falsely reporting an incident. She was charged as an adult.

Is Google's new Chrome browser any good?

Google is looking to plug the gaps in its cloud computing universe with its new browser, Chrome, which many believe could be a serious competitor to Microsoft's IE and Mozilla's Firefox.

The browser was made available overnight for free download, in beta form, and after a couple of hours' use, it looks to be a decent addition to the web arsenal - especially when it's in full-release form.
