Swedish report: iPhone 3G woes due to hardware
STOCKHOLM - A Swedish media report says poor wireless broadband connectivity for some of Apple's new iPhones is most likely due to a hardware problem introduced during mass production.
Technical magazine Ny Teknik cites unnamed sources as saying that tests show the handset's sensitivity to third-generation network signals is well below the level specified in the 3G standard.

Chris Barton: Price of getting NZ up to speed
National nationalises the network. Crazy as it sounds, this could be the outcome of the party's proposed $1.5 billion, six-year investment in a new fibre-to-the-home network for New Zealand.
Details of the plan remain sketchy, but we do know it will involve some form of public/private partnership to make up the shortfall of the $3 billion-plus needed to realise this bold vision for 75 per cent of New Zealand homes.

Court blocks Defcon presentation on subway hack
LAS VEGAS - A federal judge ordered three college students to cancel a presentation at a computer hackers' conference where they planned to show security flaws in the automated fare system used by Boston's subway.
The temporary restraining order, issued by a US district judge in Massachusetts, prevented the Massachusetts Institute of Technology students from demonstrating at the Defcon conference in Las Vegas how to use the vulnerabilities to get free rides.

Intel's new chip to be called Core i7
SANTA CLARA - Intel plans to sell its new generation of chips for desktop computers under the established "Core" brand, with the first chips of the new line to be called Core i7.
The microprocessors are based on a design the company has code-named Nehalem and are expected to be in production the last three months of this year. Intel says the new design will deliver both high performance and energy efficiency.

Yahoo lets users knock back ads
NEW YORK - Yahoo will let its web visitors decline ads targeted to their browsing habits, becoming the latest internet company to break from a common industry practice as Congress steps up scrutiny of customised advertising and consumer privacy.
Yahoo has been offering that opt-out choice only to ads the company runs on outside, partner sites. Yesterday Yahoo said it now would extend that option to ads displayed on its own sites, to boost users' trust - and in doing so, perhaps draw visitors from its rivals.
