Internet giant upsets privacy groups

Privacy groups are keeping a close eye on internet giant Google as it prepares to publish images of thousands of Kiwi homes on its Street View website.

Cars fitted with specialised cameras have been roaming the roads of New Zealand for six months, taking pictures of houses, buildings and anything else in their paths.

The latest figures from Statistics New Zealand show 1.5 million subscribers are now hooked up to the internet and most have broadband.

Broadband subscriptions have increased 10.7 per cent in the six months to March 2008, to reach 891,000.

Inventors flock to file patents in US

GENEVA - The United States is again the favoured destination to patent inventions after 43 years in which Japan and the now-defunct Soviet Union held the lead, a UN report said.

The US Patent and Trademark Office received nearly a quarter of the 1.76 million patents filed worldwide in 2006 - the latest years for which figures are available - according to the World Intellectual Property Organisation, or WIPO.

Robot gets first taste of Martian water

LOS ANGELES - The Phoenix spacecraft has tasted Martian water for the first time, scientists reported overnnight.

By melting icy soil in one of its lab instruments, the robot confirmed the presence of frozen water lurking below the Martian permafrost. Until now, evidence of ice in Mars' north pole region has been largely circumstantial.

The pronunciation of "Whakatane" and its close proximity to the offensive F-word word has seen the town censored in cyberspace.

A visiting tourist was astounded that he could not search for "Whakatane" on the district council's own online service, because the word was considered vulgar.

Scrabulous back on Facebook

NEW YORK - Scrabulous is back on Facebook, but now it has a new name, new rules and circular tiles that could help its makers skirt legal claims from the owners of Scrabble.

The return came less than two days after the creators of Scrabulous blocked their popular version of the word game from US and Canadian users of Facebook, the online hangout. The Indian brothers behind the word game had gotten sued in federal court by Hasbro, the owner of Scrabble's North American rights.

13,600 EFA breaches on govt sites

A State Service Commission investigation has found government websites contain 13,600 references to the "Labour-led Government" which should be removed because of the Electoral Finance Act.

National deputy leader Bill English said the SSC had sent out a memo to 120 state agencies saying "Labour-led government" was not appropriate under the EFA.

Google faces billion-dollar YouTube suit

The media empire founded by Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi said it was seeking at least 500 million euros ($1.06 billion) in damages against YouTube and Google for allegedly misusing video it produced.

In a lawsuit filed with Rome civil court, Mediaset said it had identified on YouTube at least 4,643 video clips of Mediaset-owned material that was available on June 10 alone after being posted "without obtaining rights."

Hide the YouTube porn, say luddite MPs

Films posted on video-sharing websites such as YouTube should carry age certificates and those with pornographic or violent content should be subject to a television-style "watershed", MPs said today.

Warning about the internet's "dark side", they also protested over "shocking" delays by the industry in taking down images of child abuse once they have been spotted.

Telecom denies 1500 jobs to go to Philippines

Telecom said a report today it may move most customer service jobs to the Philippines with more than 1500 jobs threatened is inaccurate.

The Dominion Post said it had obtained an email that stated the company's faults service was the only area not to be trialled in Manila.
