More than 10 per cent of New Zealanders are concerned about the atom-smashing Hadron Collider in Switzerland creating a disastrous mini black-hole, according to a poll.

Created by the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, the huge machine began operating less than two weeks ago and got scientists excited after flinging protons around at nearly the speed of light.

Microsoft to take on debt in massive stock buy back

SEATTLE - Chaos in the money markets gave Microsoft an opening to announce it would take on debt for the first time, launch a new $40 billion (NZ$58 billion) stock buyback plan and raise its dividend.

The moves indicate that for all the credit problems plaguing the financial sector, cash-laden technology companies with good credit ratings are still borrowing money on favourable terms and otherwise enjoying flexibility.
