Nothing to cheer about for Yahoo as stocks plummet

SAN FRANCISCO - Yahoo's stock has sunk to its lowest level in nearly five years, magnifying the challenge facing the internet company as its management tries to justify their rebuff of Microsoft's $47.5 billion takeover bid.

Shares plummeted US$1.01, or 5.4 per cent to close at $17.75 - a price unseen since October 2003.

Sony recalls laptops due to possible overheating

TOKYO - Sony announced today it is recalling 440,000 Vaio laptop computers worldwide due to a wiring flaw that could cause overheating.

Sony said the recall involves 19 models in the Vaio TZ series manufactured between May 2007 and July 2008.

Veteran technology investor Jenny Morel hopes to launch a new $100 million venture capital fund in a bid to revitalise what she claims is a moribund market for start-up businesses.

A decade after she founded one of New Zealand's first venture capital firms, No 8 Ventures, Morel says the industry is in dire straits and urgently needs more money to ensure increasingly savvy Kiwis realise their global ambitions.

June Dunleavy, 47, and Ralph Thomason, 45, both spent thousands trying to fly potential lovers they met through online dating services to Brisbane.

NY teen arrested after Facebook threat

NEW YORK - A teenage student accused of posting a threat against her school on her social-networking web page was just trying to prolong her summer break, her lawyer said.

The student, Tiffany Spatafora, 16, spent the first day of her senior year in police custody and court instead. She was released without bail after pleading not guilty to misdemeanour charges of aggravated harassment and falsely reporting an incident. She was charged as an adult.

The country's largest IT industry gathering had to put out the "full house" sign again this year with organisers saying business enthusiasm for web-based technology is helping drive demand for the annual event.

About 2200 IT professionals paid up to $1860 each to attend Microsoft's three-day Tech Ed conference at the SkyCity convention centre this week.

Is Google's new Chrome browser any good?

Google is looking to plug the gaps in its cloud computing universe with its new browser, Chrome, which many believe could be a serious competitor to Microsoft's IE and Mozilla's Firefox.

The browser was made available overnight for free download, in beta form, and after a couple of hours' use, it looks to be a decent addition to the web arsenal - especially when it's in full-release form.

Chrome to take the shine off Microsoft apps

MOUNTAIN VIEW - Google's new web browser is designed to expand its huge lead in the internet search market and reduce Microsoft imprint on personal computers.

The free browser, called Chrome, is being promoted as a sleeker, faster, safer and reliable alternative to Microsoft's Internet Explorer, which has been the leading vehicle for surfing the web for the past decade. Despite recent inroads by Mozilla Foundation's Firefox, Internet Explorer is still used by roughly three-fourths of the world's web surfers.

Sony unveils improved PlayStation Portable

TOKYO - Sales are improving in Japan for Sony's PlayStation Portable handheld video game machine, and a beefed up version with a clearer display is expected to add momentum, a senior executive said yesterday.

The portable game machine faces tough competition from Nintendo DS - the handheld machine from the Japanese manufacturer of Pokemon and Super Mario games. Nintendo also has a big hit in the Wii home console that's battering Sony's PlayStation 3 in sales.
