Some advice on buying a laptop...wanted please. I am planning to buy one new, spending somewhere in the $1250 to $1800 range. What features should I look for, or avoid, please. And how many Gb would I need to run Windows Vista wth ease?

If your buying a brand new one It would already have enough GB for Vista. I dont know any new laptops that are under 20 GB lol.

My best advice is to work out what you want to use it for. Laptops suitable for playing mid to high end games or editing movies are different from laptops suitable for just surfing the net and using Office. is portability/weight/battery life important to you?

I won't be using it for games, just surfing the net and office functions. Portability is a factor. I will still have a desktop computer with Windows XP.

Re # 2 Whats enough RAM for Vista ? 4gb maybe....

An "entry level laptop" is more likely to be bigger and heavier than a more expensive one. Make sure you pay close attention to battery life, and think how much you're going to be carrying it around and check out the weight. If it's just around your house or from the house to the car, it's not as big a deal as if it would be if you were lugging it around uni all day. If you really want portability, consider a sub-14" model, which you might be able to get for under your top limit.

4gb for normal usage on vista ?....crap ! my lappy runs vista home premium with 1.5gb and most of the time it's only half utilised

Ooh me too I'm after a basic laptop too and yes I want it to be pretty. So which would be the better one to get? An entry level Vaio or a Dell?
| geek_soodanim | August 27, 2008, 5:17 pm | #13 |
Lol pretty....don't know if you'll get much advise on the "prettiness" of a laptop. Basic and pretty don't really go together.

Haha i just meant which is better out of those coloured dell ones and coloured vaios. Just want a basic one that is pretty coloured. Vaios just seem so expensive!

I have been not liking dell for a whileBut after my mother got a DELL, i realized they are actually pretty good. I would recommend a dell.

I have just bought a Dell laptop (Inspiron) - about 3 months old. I would have to say that it is really good - BUT it is damn heavy and this is a big disadvantage for me. Lugging it from the car to office every day is a pain. I was expecting something lighter - but apparently lighter means more $.
