Dell laptop warrenties| geek_agatornz | August 27, 2008, 4:26 pm | #1 | | Dell laptop warrenties just brought a new dell lap top - turns out it has insufficient ram to run vista (nice of them to not offer sufficient as the basic)
i asked for a ram quote from dell and of cause its a stupid priceso i can get it and do it my self far easier - but how does that affect their warrenty?
given that they seem prepared to talk me through ram install in the support option in answer to my first email? |

How much have you got? | | geek_soodanim | August 27, 2008, 4:46 pm | #5 | | Basically if it came installed with vista, you have sufficient RAM | | geek_kevin16 | August 27, 2008, 4:48 pm | #6 | | I'd be asking wgy you bought the lappy without vista installed and running?, seems to me you bought one 'specification' and tried to 'upgrade' for no extra $s,.. | | geek_1clickaway | August 27, 2008, 4:56 pm | #7 | | Adding RAM Well; I found a photo step by step; (note; Go as far as the FIRST BACK piece :) ) [http://tinyurl.com/6qbw3x] Hope this is helpful :D | | geek_agatornz | August 27, 2008, 5:11 pm | #8 | | The reason we wondered about ram was in vista the gadgets bar gauge for ram never goes below 85 - 90 % the computer shipped with vista loaded and 1 gig of ram. there was an upgrade to 2 gig when i ordered but i expected the basic to run find with vista - .... | | geek_soodanim | August 27, 2008, 5:14 pm | #9 | | 1GB is fine for Vista. What's else is running when the ram "never" goes below that? | | geek_agatornz | August 27, 2008, 5:18 pm | #10 | | Nothing else is running thats just vista at start up ...
for example - i have just done a prune of the things that start at start up , now i have firefox running, sidebar, updater, touch pad, macaffee, and network - all shipped with the pc - and the ram is stuck at 81% on the gadget gauge.. havent seen it go below - while the cpu is at 2% | | geek_baker-assoc | August 27, 2008, 5:57 pm | #11 | | Ram is a user serviceable part In other words, Ram is one of those things that you can replace / upgrade but if you do they will not cover the new ram under warrenty | | geek_agatornz | August 27, 2008, 6:30 pm | #12 | | Ah ok so i can install it my self and if it craps out that is my problem - cool | | geek_agatornz | August 27, 2008, 9:21 pm | #13 | | Yes i did a re install repair in DW no change its still looking for it | | geek_utwo | August 27, 2008, 10:49 pm | #14 | | Why Does Vista Use All My Memory? Vista uses RAM for caching, so it's normal to see high memory usage. "Vista is trying its darndest to pre-emptively populate every byte of system memory with what it thinks I might need next. It's running a low-priority background task that harvests previously accessed data from the disk and plops it into unused system memory. They even have a fancy marketing name for it-- SuperFetch" www.codinghorror.com/blog/archives/000688.html | | Leave your comment: | |
