A good PC backup system?

geek_frogg3rAugust 27, 2008, 9:15 pm#1
A good PC backup system? Anyone can recommend a good (as in cheap and reliable) backup system that will allow me to easily restore everything back to what it was? I've just spent a week installing and upgrading stuff on my new PC running XP SP3 and just worried I might get a virus attack or something worse and all of that hard work wiped out in seconds. Any suggestions? thanks...

Best way imho is to learn about each individual program, then backup necessary files manually or by using a batch file.

Norton ghost .

Why not just make it real difficult kickpac

Ghost takes a whole 12 1/2 minutes to install after making the original image is what i use, but then i format the drive with paragon partition manager then ghost using another o/s installation/partition, cause i don't like Norton's being on the o/s i use...

Norton Ghost 1. I assume it can mirror my hardrive? I'm happy to get another SATA hd perhaps an el cheapo 100 Gb one to mirror to ... 2. does it need to be resident? as am not a big fan of all these little background apps that clutter up your startup .. thanks..

If you have linux disc you can use 1 of the best kept secrets of linux, the "dd" command, boot the linux disc, open up a terminal, "su -" or "sudo -s" to root and type "dd if=/dev/hda of=/dev/hdb" to clone the whole hdd, if you only want to clone a partition "dd if=/dev/hda1 of=/dev/hdb1" , if you are using a sata hdd its sda instead of hda, one of the great thing about the dd command is that it recognises most of the partition formats, ntfs, fat32, ext2, ext3, hfs+, great if you use the 3 OS's, windows, mac and linux.

Norton Ghost or Casper - have used and do use both (on a very frequent basis)

Shadow protect makes ghost look like junk. far faster, far superior in every way. Ghost is still in the dinasour age, just like its anti virus software.
geek_gbbrotAugust 28, 2008, 1:20 pm#19
Acronis true image.
geek_gracey_lainAugust 28, 2008, 3:22 pm#20
I concur with Acronis. Bullguard also has a good back up that comes with their antivirus suite. Or Cobian Backup maybe?
geek_skin1235August 28, 2008, 6:59 pm#21
If using ghost or trueimage DO burn a boot disk when it is suggested, senario: have image from trueimage on partition D or E, and C goes belly up ( windows normal behavior for friday night), drop boot cd into drive and reboot, restore trueimage from other partition, back online inside 15 minutes with all data true and correct to last image done - DO an image at least weekly - overwrite r incremental each week and overwrite at least each month

Now I suppose you want t know where to get them or each of them 'at the best possible price', suggest also partition magic 8 (cos that was the last of the easy ones to get free)
