WHS Odd system requirements| geek_barmanmyk | August 28, 2008, 1:19 pm | #1 | | WHS Odd system requirements Just got the Windows Home Server DVDs. The system specs require a minimum of 70GB HDD space - not 40, not 80 but 70. Only reason I can think of is for those running 36GB Raptors or SCSI? |

| | geek_drcspy | August 28, 2008, 1:20 pm | #2 | | Hmmmm...........this a trial version or the real thing ? | | geek_barmanmyk | August 28, 2008, 1:26 pm | #3 | | Trial 120 days '70GB or larger ATA, SATA, or SCSI hard drive as the primary hard drive and any number of additional hard drives of any size.' Must admit, I'm a little wary of this install, as the whole 'pool of discs' concept doesn't fill me with faith! Lucky everything important is on NAS. | | geek_pjtoo | August 28, 2008, 8:31 pm | #4 | | WHS Data duplication (RAID 1) WHS creates two drive partitions at installion. One 20Gb (C:\) for the OS, and (D:\) with whatever HDD capacity is left. This is irrespective of how many physical HDD's are in your system. However, when you have two or more HDDs installed, you have the option of selecting Folder duplication, providing the equivilent of raid 1, as Folder duplication creats a copy of the Folder on separate physical HDDs. | | geek_comp_repairs | August 28, 2008, 8:34 pm | #5 | | Is this hpc server or home server thers 2 difrent types | | geek_barmanmyk | August 28, 2008, 8:41 pm | #6 | | Windows home Server .. | | geek_comp_repairs | August 28, 2008, 8:47 pm | #7 | | Sorry i was just loging into my ms account. lol i had everything in my list even retail keys for it but page is down. but this is link but it wont show enything of mine just page info when its up https://connect.microsoft.com/WindowsHomeServer | | geek_comp_repairs | August 28, 2008, 8:49 pm | #8 | | Or if you cut homeserver off end you can join up with crew and enjoy testing like we do even perks at end of testing | | geek_barmanmyk | August 28, 2008, 8:58 pm | #9 | | Cheers - I'll give that a go. Just got the trial of WHS to experiment with; have to wait for a new PSU now :( | | geek_pjtoo | August 28, 2008, 9:18 pm | #10 | | WHS is certainly worth playing around withI run it on an old Celeron 1200 with 512Mb SDram (350w power supply) and 320Gb (x2) HDDs. Turns on automatically at 6pm to backup any PC's that are up, (can't get it to wake them if not on yet - could be a NIC thing) it then shuts down once it senses no PCs left on. Works great with Windows Media Centre and acts as media server for DVDs, and iTunes (a couple of add-ins required) | | geek_barmanmyk | August 28, 2008, 9:23 pm | #11 | | Yeah it looks pretty interesting. Pity about the PSU lol! The wake on LAN issue you refer to could be due to an issue reading the 'wake' signal from a router. | | geek_comp_repairs | August 28, 2008, 9:24 pm | #12 | | So is windows server 2008. but now looking for 64bit system to run essential business server 30gb install just nead mb and cpu now | | geek_spj2 | August 28, 2008, 9:38 pm | #13 | | Hey pjtoo as a iTunes server, can you sync an iPod from a computer that isn't the server? | | geek_pixma | August 28, 2008, 10:32 pm | #14 | | Windows server ? The thing I remember about Windows Server was something like "You must be criminal to use Windows as a server" or something to that effect. | | geek_pjtoo | August 29, 2008, 6:55 pm | #15 | | Re iPod syncingYes, you would sync your iPod using iTunes installed on your PC or laptop (as you normally would), iTunes is not actually (or required to be) installed on WHS. You just store your music files there - they then show up in iTunes as FireFly Media Server (the add-in I was refering to) under SHARED, LIBRARY and STORE). Disclaimer: I don't actually own an iPod, but do not see any reason that it would not work. :-) | | geek_barmanmyk | August 29, 2008, 6:58 pm | #16 | | Pixma ? explain? | | Leave your comment: | |
