geek_knight2216March 17, 2008, 5:29 pm#2
WHAT type of anti -vir is it and why dont you set it to run either in the monring or late at night?
geek_charles.jMarch 17, 2008, 5:47 pm#3
You are the first i've seen that has anti-vir slowing down their pc. what else do you have running?
geek_intradeMarch 17, 2008, 6:07 pm#4
Maybe he aint got antivir ? http://www.free-av.com/
geek_jacqui248March 17, 2008, 6:17 pm#5
Hi sry was having dinner.... i have FREE anti-vir thatwhat it is... and in regards to doing it at a different time, it dsoesnt matter WHEN it still makes it slow and needs a restart.... what else do i have running?? just opera and outlook express
geek_savagehurricaneMarch 17, 2008, 6:19 pm#6
How much RAM do you have installed? and which anti-virus program is it?
geek_scorp11March 17, 2008, 6:22 pm#7
#1... you get what you pay for , or in your case nothing ...if you want a decent AV -0 and dont mind paying for it , get NOD32 , updates every hour and u dont even notice it
geek_swivelMarch 17, 2008, 6:25 pm#8
#1... Well to test if it is, Download AVG and install that (after uninstalling the other). That will test if it is the Virus Program. Also get Ccleaner
geek_jacqui248March 17, 2008, 6:30 pm#9
I have ccleaner already.... i THOUGHT avg WASNT FREE ANYMORE (oops caps) that why i got this one now...it is at that link above www.free-av.com i have 512mb ram....
geek_julieandcasperMarch 17, 2008, 7:04 pm#10
Never heard of them. Simplest solution is download one of the other well known free alternatives, uninstall the one you're using, install new free alternative.
geek_pcmasterMarch 17, 2008, 7:12 pm#11
As charles said this is also first case I've heard of where antivir has slowed down a pc, it could be a program or something else running in the background causing the slowdown - the amount of icons you have near the clock will give you an indication of whats running, right click each one and shut them off before scanning and see if you notice an improvement
geek_pcmasterMarch 17, 2008, 7:14 pm#12
Julieandcasper just because you havent heard of it doesnt mean they should switch to something else!!
geek_charles.jMarch 17, 2008, 7:33 pm#13
How does downloading an alternative fix the problem? if the user has not uninstalled a previous virus scanner properly it could be clashing. i know that ZA doesnt fully remove itself if you uninstall it. it wouldnt let my pc on the net after i uninstalled it. best to diagnose the problem. rather than throwing other applications at it
geek_charles.jMarch 17, 2008, 7:34 pm#14
.... and when i ment other programs running i was meaning in the background. like one pc here idles at 300mb (xp sp3) because it has The audio and Hp stuff running in the background.
geek_pheonixMarch 17, 2008, 7:37 pm#15
#10 .. it's the download site for AntiVir free version. Obviously the program is conflicting with something else or doesn't unload from the memory. You could spend a large amount of time tracing the fault, so maybe try another such as Avast ( http://tinyurl.com/56jesor )or AVG ( http://tinyurl.com/36h96y ) .. free versions of course.
geek_swivelMarch 17, 2008, 7:38 pm#16
Charles.j He thinks it's the virus prog that is slowing it down, By installing another Virus prog in it's place will work out if it is indeed the Virus program
geek_jacqui248March 17, 2008, 7:47 pm#17
So i did what as said above deleted antivir downloaded AVG.... and it is WEE eeny bit better but it still slows it down...next to my clock is avg, msn mesnger, yahoo xtra messenger, volume, motorola modem properties, and spybot SD resident
geek_charles.jMarch 17, 2008, 7:49 pm#18
Re #16 i see what he is getting at.. but it may not be the problem. what i'm trying to say is.. why not clean up the pc? check everything before uninstalling and installing new things?
geek_jacqui248March 17, 2008, 7:55 pm#19
I have spybot and and i use ccleaner and i defreagment regularly... i think i need more ram... but trying to get that done is a mission as i cant live wtithout my comp...
geek_charles.jMarch 17, 2008, 7:57 pm#20
Lol well thats a good start. spybot is good. and ccleaner is a bonus too. what is the specs of your pc? os as well?
geek_pheonixMarch 17, 2008, 8:05 pm#21
Turn off the Spybot Tea timer facility. It will also slow your PC down. It really isn't that great at preventing Spyware as it relies on the user approving requests.
geek_jacqui248March 17, 2008, 8:10 pm#22
Ok phoenix will do that... to poster be that ... hmmm specs... ummmm i got win xp, when it starts up it says AMD Sempron 2400, 166 gh 480 mb ram..
geek_charles.jMarch 17, 2008, 8:11 pm#23
.... 1.6ghz? 512mb ram.. should be fine. although the sempron's were slower than a celeron i hear..
geek_jacqui248March 17, 2008, 8:21 pm#24
How do i turn the tea timer off?? ???
geek_pheonixMarch 17, 2008, 8:27 pm#25
Instructions here http://tinyurl.com/at8jb
geek_julieandcasperMarch 17, 2008, 8:27 pm#26
That's a very good suggestion..it's usually the first thing people do with spybot. :)
geek_julieandcasperMarch 17, 2008, 8:36 pm#27
Are you running vista? I scrolled the thread and didn't see your OS mentioned but maybe I missed it.
geek_charles.jMarch 17, 2008, 8:38 pm#28
.... i thought dell etc stopped selling laptops + vista with 512mb ram?
geek_jacqui248March 17, 2008, 9:11 pm#29
