Have a look at opendns.org they have filters you can enable and also you can add specific sites to block :) it involves just changing your DNS servers under your connection propertys.

Have recently looked into this myself I have a 6yo & a 11 yo. If you are using Internet Exp, you can go to Control Panel, Internet Options & then Content. There is a Content Advisor you can enable. If yo are using Firefox (which I am) I have downloaded an add on called Glubble. Each child has like there own browser page with their own websites, specific to them. It also has a link to heaps of childrens websites , educational & games. If there is a website they want to add they have to request your permission. You the have to authorise it, and need to key in a password to do so. A few annoying things about the site, mainly because we all use the same PC, but so far my DD loves it especially.

I use K9 Web protection. It's free and seems to work well - as long as you don't let your kids know what the password is!
