Video embedding into websites.| geek_kruz23 | March 20, 2008, 5:17 pm | #1 | | Video embedding into websites. I use both quicktime and flash to embed videos into my websites. Which of the two do you think is better? Does anyone know the difference between progressive download and streaming video? Ta |

More people have the plugin; quicktime streaming can be problematic, especially when it's been encoded for specific connection speeds and the viewer's Quicktime connection speed doesn't match that. Progressive download is simply normal http downloading, but the movie will play at the same time as it downloads. Streaming is usually done over rtsp (c.f. http), uses different ports (not port 80) and your computer will only download a small amount of the video into buffer before playing it (and then discard the information). Streaming isn't really intended to deliver the entire file in a lump so that the user can keep it, but there are tools out there that mean they can keep the file (with a bit of fiddling). | | geek_kruz23 | March 20, 2008, 5:30 pm | #3 | | Really? I realise flash is more usable on most computers. But I have just uploaded both a flash and quicktime file. And the quicktime file plays much smoother, and the quality is better and yet the file size is smaller. | | geek_dunedin_ree | March 20, 2008, 5:33 pm | #4 | | I meant that the flash plugin was better in that it causes less problems for the end-user. How good the quality is depends on how you compressed it, what codecs you use and how good the source material is. You can use the flash plugin to embed .mp4 movies (h264, aac) into web pages, and I'd suggest that as something to try too. Then you get the benefit of a really good codec with a really good plugin. | | geek_kruz23 | March 20, 2008, 6:16 pm | #5 | | Yup I done that just today. both videos are looking quiet good now. What do youtube use for their video plug ins? | | geek_dunedin_ree | March 20, 2008, 6:18 pm | #6 | | Flash The flash plugin is playing an flv file. | | geek_hdmovies | March 20, 2008, 8:13 pm | #7 | | If you're getting quality differences change the encoding options. Eventually you'll get to know what works and what doesn't. | | Leave your comment: | |
