AVG slows things up.| geek_2alc | March 21, 2008, 10:07 am | #1 | AVG comes on automatically and slows things up something awful.
Win XP. How can I shut off the "automatic" AVG turn on, so that AVG will run only when I want it to? |

| | geek_kevin16 | March 21, 2008, 10:12 am | #2 | | 2alc not a very good idea, maybe its trying to complete a scheduled scan,.. | | geek_swivel | March 21, 2008, 10:14 am | #3 | | Open the control center, select scheduler,turn off the scan on startup | | geek_2alc | March 21, 2008, 10:16 am | #4 | | Scan You may well be right, but its driving me nuts! Full scan takes over 1 hour to cycle, so it really is getting in the way! | | geek_drcspy | March 21, 2008, 10:33 am | #5 | | #3 is right #2 kev grow a brain........it's NOT necessary for avg to even run a scheduled scan as it provides 'real time' protection anyway.... | | geek_2alc | March 21, 2008, 10:43 am | #6 | | Thanks # 3. Hopefully may sanity is saved. | | geek_kevin16 | March 21, 2008, 10:46 am | #7 | | #5, Perry glasses on , eyes down reading,.."How can I shut off the "automatic" AVG turn on, so that AVG will run only when I want it to?",.. | | geek_drcspy | March 21, 2008, 10:49 am | #8 | | Well kev I read that and the only time i'd even bother runnin an a/v scan on my system for example is to use the right clik context menu to scan either a disk i've put in the drive or else a downloaded file......this 'full scan' of the system is superfluous | | geek_kevin16 | March 21, 2008, 10:54 am | #9 | | Neither would I Perry but the question, as written, asks for AVG to be turned off, as in not starting with windows, at all,.. not just turning the scan off,.. | | geek_deodar | March 21, 2008, 10:56 am | #10 | | I just stopped it & Anti Vir from running In misconfig & Start Menu.They were
using far too many resources;includin
100 Mg RAM on boot.Better now & I'll
be getting Virus Totals on line scans
+ Kaspersky.It @ least detects and
removes worms & virri.Proven | | geek_swivel | March 21, 2008, 11:04 am | #11 | | Kevin as a tech, you learn to read between the lines, as some people don't always say it correctly. I picked it up straight away. | | geek_kevin16 | March 21, 2008, 11:10 am | #12 | | So did I swivel which is why I suggested it was a only a scan,.. | | geek_swivel | March 21, 2008, 11:12 am | #13 | | But then you could have told him to turn the scanner off on boot | | geek_kevin16 | March 21, 2008, 11:17 am | #14 | | Had to leave something for you, and Perry would have felt left out too,..I suggested why it may be happening, I'm sure #1 worked out the solution by themselves,... | | geek_2alc | March 21, 2008, 11:35 am | #15 | | Thanks. Time will tell, But I hopefully have control now. Thanks for the guidelines. | | geek_kayceaz | March 21, 2008, 1:31 pm | #16 | | If you leave your computer on overnight, why not set it to scan during the morning. Mine is set to scan at 4am so by the time I'm up comp is running normally and I can deal with any problems it has come up with. | | geek_2alc | March 22, 2008, 9:58 am | #17 | | Leaving on. kayceaz - Good idea - however I never leave the computer on if it is not in use. I have disabled the auto update. I can still scan when the computer is not required for other things, similarly with updates I can turn the update back on - but when I want to!
It really was frustrating to have the computer slow to a crawl because AVG chose to update! | | geek_drcspy | March 22, 2008, 3:09 pm | #18 | | It's unlikely that avg updating would cause the comp to 'slow to a crawl'...it would slow down your internet connection a bit but hey if you turn off autoupdates and only update every now and then you are taking a bit of a risk......ANY antivirus prog will cause most pc's to run a lot slower when theyre running a SCAN.....that's quite different to updating.....and hey kev you said : "and Perry would have felt left out too"......hell NO.....i'd just bulldoze my way in in my usual inimitable style ;-) | | Leave your comment: | |
