geek_wholesalerOctober 5, 2008, 2:39 pm#9
At least you didnt buy one of the netbooks with linux on it as their return rate is 4x higher than those of the xp versions (I guess consumers dont like it lol)
geek_icioufaOctober 5, 2008, 2:53 pm#10
I 1st installed xubuntu on a small gateway sff just to have a play, then installed ubuntu on our main pc 1.8 mhz cpu 2 gig of ram 80 gig Hdd ,i like it a lot still a few minor hiccups like the drivers for my ati radeon 9550 spat the dummy out when i installed them 75 k/ 59 Hz frequency is out of range , but stil life goes on very enjoyable just having a good play around cheers to those willing to offer assistants...
geek_intradeOctober 5, 2008, 2:58 pm#11
Why do you always want to say good by to M$ i still got microcrap i just use it as a backup, as the lesser you use it the cleaner it will stay lol. got xp pro on this machine since 03 And with linux you have to learn and like the system you use. i for one dont like ubuntu i want a clean debian system and its what i got "debian etch/kanotix". kanotix will always be based on the latest debian that is stable lenny in the futureonce its final...
geek_intradeOctober 5, 2008, 3:01 pm#12
For printer drivers on linux buy a printer that is supported or buy a driver turboprint makes a driver. I am considering to upgrade my printer and purchase turboprint. but best is to first look what supports linux then buy hardware acording. If anyone will do this then the manufacturer would have to make linux support as no one would buy there hardware otherwise.......
geek_intradeOctober 5, 2008, 3:02 pm#13
Here the link. http://www.turboprint.info/
geek_intradeOctober 5, 2008, 3:05 pm#14
Ps radeon is crap on linux buy a nvidia 9800 gtx+ next time
geek_icioufaOctober 5, 2008, 3:06 pm#15
Well not really as it's still in the grup & will use it when cleaning clients HDD XP & Vista with my anti's just thought it was time to move on...i believe at the end of this month i can just install the next ubuntu distro straight over top of this one which suits me...
geek_intradeOctober 5, 2008, 3:12 pm#16
On kanotix we just dist the system means you install the old live cd then just distro-upgrade with a simple comand then you install the latest good kernel that we tested with another few comands and then you install the grafix driver new. and your done. grafix is also done with a comand and then switching to text therminal to download the driver and auto install em while online always latest one from ati or nvidia directly.
geek_icioufaOctober 5, 2008, 3:12 pm#17
Have slowly when i can afford them been upgrading sata dvd ,hdd to add to the mobo i buy not sure what yet but getting there...
geek_intradeOctober 5, 2008, 3:13 pm#18
Yup make all drives sata i still got a crappy 7100 nvidia on my core2 duo but the 9800 gtx + is on the list...
geek_intradeOctober 5, 2008, 3:16 pm#19
You do know you can install a grafix driver on to the live cd on kanotix also. of corse its dumped when you shut the pc off only installs to ram. ubuntu 8.1 wont work with ati problems at ati I was told. its why you dont buy ati if you can nvidia was always better supported in linux.
geek_icioufaOctober 5, 2008, 3:16 pm#20
I do have a nvidia FX 5200 here i could put it in put i don't know how vista would cope ...lol
geek_overtounflyerOctober 5, 2008, 3:22 pm#21
Good on you for putting Linux on. :)
geek_0800xfordOctober 5, 2008, 3:27 pm#22
Xubuntu for the f'n WIN, i have 3 boxes here running it. if you plan to network 'xsmbrowser' is like uber panadol. thunar/Xfce lack some networking stuff.
geek_icioufaOctober 5, 2008, 4:22 pm#23
No i don't i just installed xubuntu as it was the smallest/lightest for the SFF ,will stick with ubuntu till i feel confident enough to a have a real play around with the others.
geek_gazzanova69October 5, 2008, 7:31 pm#24
Try this if you are still having printer problems http://is.gd/3xvJ
geek_mrfxitOctober 5, 2008, 8:07 pm#25
Icioufa As much as I hate to say it ;-) . .. Pixma has a good point about AV etc . . At the very least it will help prevent YOU from sending bugs out to infect other windows users.
geek_icioufaOctober 5, 2008, 8:31 pm#26
Suggestions please ??? the way i understand it i sholdnt need any i scanned all my M$ xp vista o/s no detection cant remember the last time i was infected...lol
geek_wakari06October 5, 2008, 9:12 pm#27
Ubuntu has a firewall setup by default so you shouldn't have any worries there and if you have your linux and windows OS's setup to share a storage HDD for your mp3's and avi's etc then an AV would be advisable. Free avast! Linux Home Edition is a goodie but there others like ClamAV around too. http://tinyurl.com/8rs48 You cant test your firewall at https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2
geek_wakari06October 5, 2008, 9:14 pm#28
Oooop's should have been You CAN test your firewall at https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2
geek_icioufaOctober 5, 2008, 9:15 pm#29
Thanks wakari06 will check them out...
geek_overtounflyerOctober 5, 2008, 9:27 pm#30
Distros Are like tea and coffee. Some like one, some the other and some aren't fussed as long as it's hot :). As for AV the only time you'll pass one on is if you forward an attachment from someone elseafter all you won't have any active on your system. People with computers that are able to get viruses have made the choice to be vulnerable. It's like going out on a cold winters day, in a storm with only shorts and a t-shirt onyour own fault if you get hypotermia, yes? Let AV protection be the responsibility of the recipient.
geek_sirferOctober 5, 2008, 9:35 pm#31
Good on you icioufa..when you get thru with ubuntu (and it sounds like you will within a coupke of releases) you can move on to plain old Debian. I'm cuurently running the testing/Lenny version with all the graphics and trix ;o) And that nVidia card should be sweet. I run mine with and nVidia GeForce Ti4200 which is ancient and has the fan from an old P1 cpu jammed into the fins for cooling. Debian is like "Ubuntu-Lite" and after a release or 2 or 3 on ubuntu the change-over is quite easy as the basics are exactly the same (Ubuntu and a hundred other distros are based on it). Debian Lenny should be awesome when it is released, they have even fixed some of the networking issues I had with Lenny Beta 2 and Ubuntu 8.04
geek_icioufaOctober 5, 2008, 9:47 pm#32
Might try the Nvidia card in it so i dont have to go through the hassle & commands of installing the ATI 9550,with the next ubuntu & with more experance i might re install it not going to bother buying anew one, pci-e will be the next one i buy when evre that might be...lol
geek_icioufaOctober 5, 2008, 10:07 pm#33
Had a read up & the fx5200 is supported for vista too so will give that a crack now....fingers crossed lol
geek_icioufaOctober 5, 2008, 10:17 pm#34
No problems here on vista off to ubuntu to try my luck...
geek_icioufaOctober 5, 2008, 10:36 pm#35
Nope screen resolution sucks 640x 480 is the best i can get, back to the ATI...
geek_icioufaOctober 5, 2008, 11:00 pm#36
Tomorrows another day will look at installing the ati 9550 from the sites listed cheers...
geek_icioufaOctober 6, 2008, 11:57 am#37
Still here have made some progress with the ATI 9550 is installed & working still get a 3 second clitch saying 75k/59Hz frequency is out of range then carry's on during bootup, everything working in 3D & can change the resolutions so at least thats progress ...lol

3DHaving a play with the 3D desktop options is a great way to procrastinate :)
geek_overtounflyerOctober 6, 2008, 12:49 pm#40
Another AV is If you must, KlamAV (gui version) or ClamAV (command line based). Can probably get through your package manager.
geek_icioufaOctober 6, 2008, 1:15 pm#41
LOL @ procrastinate don't have time for that Yet..lol still trying to get to know ubuntu the ins & outs commands etc...
geek_helplessOctober 6, 2008, 1:20 pm#42
Can't see why you'd have problems with a 5200 under Ubuntu..Theirs hundreds of pages out there about installing Nvidia drivers under Ubuntu..However, if the Radeons working and so is Compiz/Beryl then leave well enough alone.
geek_icioufaOctober 6, 2008, 1:43 pm#43
Thats how i feel helpless if it isn't broken don't fix it...lol
geek_0800xfordOctober 6, 2008, 2:57 pm#44

geek_intradeOctober 7, 2008, 8:14 pm#50

geek_intradeOctober 7, 2008, 8:29 pm#53
I dont understand your grub is the bootloader so only there you can select what os to load? so dont understand what you mean?
geek_icioufaOctober 7, 2008, 8:32 pm#54
When i boot up i can use my usb to get into the bios etc but when it hits the grub i have to use the ps2 if i wanted choose to go into the M$ o/s...
geek_hunnyb1October 7, 2008, 8:33 pm#55

geek_icioufaOctober 7, 2008, 8:34 pm#56

geek_icioufaOctober 7, 2008, 8:35 pm#57

geek_btoogoodOctober 7, 2008, 8:36 pm#58

geek_hunnyb1October 7, 2008, 8:36 pm#59

3 lol you're gonna lurrrve the command line!
geek_rua69October 7, 2008, 9:11 pm#67
Hang on have I misunderstood you? Just to be clear, you aren't alone - the mouse *never* works in grubit isn't meant toin fact I've never even considered trying it due to absence of pointer! So are you saying that nothing happens when you select Windows? Or everything works as it should, but you just hate using keyboard arrows to select your OS?
geek_icioufaOctober 7, 2008, 9:12 pm#68
Hunnyb1 9 went ito the bios low & be hold it was disable don't know how cause it had been working ty
geek_helplessOctober 7, 2008, 9:16 pm#69
Dunno what your really Talking about with the usb thing.Regarding the Power Saving thing.Sometimes theirs a utility called Kpowersaved running thats started by default..Easy to turn off things you don't need starting .Open a Konsole su to root.Type apt-get install sysvconfig hit enter.Once it's in type sysvconfig in the konsole as root and see if that Kpower things starting automatically..if it is disable it with sysv.
geek_icioufaOctober 7, 2008, 9:16 pm#70
Cheers rua69 i know about the mouse it was the usb keyboard arrows that weren't working but are now ...cheers & still would like to sort out the power management options of never but does...lol
geek_rua69October 7, 2008, 9:16 pm#71
Ahh I thought you were using ps2 keyboard as standard and usb mouseas you were and enjoy both your OSs, preferably Ubuntu more...
geek_icioufaOctober 7, 2008, 9:19 pm#72
Thanks helpless will have a look & see i can now unplug the ps2 keyboard & mouse & just use the usb wireless lazy ah...lol
geek_icioufaOctober 7, 2008, 9:22 pm#73
I have ubuntu XPpro & vista all install But am enjoying learning ubuntu & are also leaning more towards ubuntu than mickymouse i.e M$...lol
geek_rua69October 7, 2008, 9:22 pm#74
Icioufa if you're using Ubuntu with default Gnome desktop environment, go to System (in the top toolbar) - Preferences - Power Management and make your choices. helpless is talking about Kubuntu which uses the KDE desktop.
geek_helplessOctober 7, 2008, 9:22 pm#75
Yep goodo...call sysvconfig the msconfig of Linux..
geek_helplessOctober 7, 2008, 9:24 pm#76
,,,sysvconfig is control Shouldn't matter..Ubuntu Kubuntu..mepis,,whatever
geek_helplessOctober 7, 2008, 9:29 pm#77
But yeah,,see your point rua Install it anyway sometime..Ideal for getting rid of unneeded junk..and Htop..apt-get install htop or a capital H
geek_icioufaOctober 7, 2008, 9:34 pm#78
4 not anymore have installed advanced desktop effects settings, as i said i have set power management to never but does...
geek_rua69October 7, 2008, 9:35 pm#79
Does sysvconfig come as standard on Ubuntu? I'd not heard of it and just installed it out of curiosityit's certainly not for the casual messer-wither! which includes me!
geek_helplessOctober 7, 2008, 9:38 pm#80
Dunno rua...think its a sort of bog standard Linux thing thats been around for years..Its pretty easy to use..Bit basic looking thats all..
geek_sirferOctober 7, 2008, 9:47 pm#81
C'mon rua! you're running debian! AND the command line rocks ;o)
geek_helplessOctober 7, 2008, 9:47 pm#82
Theirs a lot of those Dos looking things around for Linux.as I said sysv, htop, ntop, iptraf wget. usefull for the tinkering type of person who likes looking at things and needs basic stuff for the job.
geek_helplessOctober 7, 2008, 9:53 pm#83
And to my mind moving a few arrows up and down beats typing Konsole commands,,I mean theirs thousands of the commands that I'd never learn in a lifetime so the little utilities come in handy
geek_helplessOctober 7, 2008, 10:04 pm#84
Take wget,,it'll download anything wget -c -t 0 --timeout=30 http://link-to-the-file-you-want That syntax from a Konsole will get you a download from anywhere for anything..if it's interupted it simply reconnects and carries on.So essentially apt=get install wget Then all you go is cd(change directory to where you want the download to end up enter the syntax above and the http/ftp address and away it goes. The simplicity of it is what I love.Wgets probably already in most bog standard Linux installs..Konsole..whereis wget..that'll tell you..Roots the man.
geek_gazzanova69October 7, 2008, 10:08 pm#85
To make things really easy theres Ultamatix ultamatix.com a very handy installer for games, codecs, java, flash, dvd ripping software, multimedia players and many more =)
geek_helplessOctober 7, 2008, 10:13 pm#86
Anyway I'm raving Leave it with you.. get carried away occasionally..stretcher..LoL
geek_icioufaOctober 7, 2008, 10:15 pm#87
Thanks guys will have another look in the morning been a long day need to digest & use whats been suggested cheers will post updates again.regards ic
geek_rua69October 7, 2008, 10:30 pm#88
Helpless, sirfer *shrug* I use Debian for its reliability and elegance, not for terminal grief :P because I'm a very reluctant tinkerer, more likely to break things and spend ages trying to fix them! apt-get and config file editing are about my cli limitsgimme a gui that doesn't make something elsewhere go pop and I'll be very happy! But I'm still going to learn about those apps in 2, cheers helpless.
geek_rua69October 7, 2008, 10:32 pm#89
Icioufa good luck, and welcome to Debian-based Linux!
geek_cybertaoOctober 7, 2008, 11:45 pm#90
ATI I've got a X700(I know, I'll get a better one someday) and installed the proprietary one directly from http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.HTML after it installs, you have do 'sudo aticonfig --initial -f' The '-f' part forces the driver to completely rewrite your xorg.conf file, but in my experience it's the best way to go. I'm not sure if displayconfig-gtk is installed, look for it in the package manager. 'sudo displayconfig-gtk' pulls up the screen configuration from KDE, nice to use and adds the entries into you xorg.conf file for you.
geek_cybertaoOctober 7, 2008, 11:47 pm#91
Graphics run really well but it's a screen hog for full screen programs. I play WoW on mine with great results. I think better than XP, been a while since I installed that...
geek_cybertaoOctober 7, 2008, 11:51 pm#92
Ubuntu Linux 8.10, Intrepid Ibex will be out soon as well.
geek_cybertaoOctober 7, 2008, 11:52 pm#93
And helpless please stop running the console in root.
geek_icioufaOctober 8, 2008, 3:25 am#94
Cat naps who needs them lol cheers cybertao i have already installed displayconfig-gtk so will look at that also...
geek_sirferOctober 8, 2008, 8:34 am#95
Hey rua I hear where you're coming from. I'm a relentless tinkerer ...a working computer is a boring computer ;o)...haven't had to do that much lately...tried running debian testing for some excitement and it hasn't broken yet haha ;o) runs better than hardy heron too...what version you running?
geek_rua69October 8, 2008, 10:26 am#96
Sirfer, I'd tinker more if both me and the computer were younger and I had more time! I'm running lenny which I think is still testing, though I had to inject some sid a while ago to fix a bug that took out both my desktops. So technically it's a lenny/sid system albeit with the sid source commented out. Apart from the above I've had no problems with testing (can't count user errors, of which I've made a few!), so I might stick with it after lenny becomes stable. FWIW, I'd say that Debian testing is at least as reliable as Ubuntu, maybe even more so, because it isn't tied to a tight release schedule.
geek_icioufaOctober 8, 2008, 10:37 am#97
Cybertao Re 0 what o/s are you using as it says it only supports Redhat and Suse & i'm using ubuntu when i tried to install it told me i needed to be super-user where to from here ???
geek_gazzanova69October 8, 2008, 10:49 am#98
To become super-user fire up the terminal and type "sudo -s" without the quotes
geek_icioufaOctober 8, 2008, 11:13 am#99
Easy when you know how lol Ty gazzanova69...seems to be working how would i check ?
geek_icioufaOctober 8, 2008, 11:28 am#100
Bloody heck a hundy it's a lot better than what it was but still can't mirror on to the tv keeps coming up with out of range ,but heck only a small inconvenience still learning & happy to cheers...
geek_tessalOctober 8, 2008, 11:34 am#101
Seems to be working how would i check ? close the terminal session you -sudo -s to get superuser, re-open a new terminal and try doing a superuser task...does it ask you to "superuser yourself again..on kanotix debian-etch the superuser is good within the terminal till the terminal is closed.
geek_tessalOctober 8, 2008, 11:38 am#102
On kanotix -sux "password" is the -sudo -s of buntubuntu..
geek_icioufaOctober 8, 2008, 11:43 am#103
Still a little over my head tessal lol sudo displayconfig-gtk put that command in & it opened my display settings does that help
geek_tessalOctober 8, 2008, 11:55 am#104
Oh,sorry icioufa didn't mean too confuse yah, yeah you'll get the hang of it soon man great forums / ebooks everywhere to steer yah right .
geek_icioufaOctober 8, 2008, 11:58 am#105
Lspci no worries been doing some reading well lots of it, put the above command in & it displayed the o/s properties & my ati 9550 gfx card so must be working ...
geek_tessalOctober 8, 2008, 12:01 pm#106
You probably have a TON of ebooks already, but incase you need some clearcut no bollocks ones here http://tinyurl.com/3meeyf ,1000+ Commands for Ubuntu and Debian Power Users, Linux Bible, 2008 Edition, Moving to Ubuntu Linux, Linux Networking Cookbook, Linux Shell Scripting with Bash.

Yep nice1 man radeon 9550 ,yep good support on that card..same as the one im using in the kanotix box, kanotix has a ported ATI radeon utillity which is exactly what you need...more better control..buntu should have it available also. runs better than the windows ATI utillity.
geek_icioufaOctober 8, 2008, 12:10 pm#110
Cheers less than 1 minute to go...
geek_tessalOctober 8, 2008, 12:10 pm#111

geek_tessalOctober 8, 2008, 12:14 pm#113
Whoops mine is a radeon 9600, not the same as yours..but supported over most if not all the distro's ive tested.
geek_helplessOctober 8, 2008, 12:57 pm#114
I can't fathom this "please stop running the Konsole as root"business. If I want to edit something that needs Root privileges I just fire up the Konsole su to Root and edit the thing with MidnigtCommander.I could do it with Krusader but that still needs Root privileges to edit certain things.I then close the Konsole.Theirs heaps of ways to do things in Linux and not everyone does them the same.I'll admit with some apps I could change all the privileges on the assorted bits and pieces that make everything run but really they aren't open long enough to be worried about it..
geek_0800xfordOctober 8, 2008, 3:19 pm#115
default ubuntu [hardy at least] there is a "disable power saving" icon in the panel from memory. n00bs try $ whatis 'this thing' and $ apropos 'this thing' "this thing" being what you want to know about.

geek_sirferOctober 9, 2008, 11:26 am#119
6 rua69 Ah another Testing user! Seems not that many debianites use stable...testing must be more fun ;o) I agree about the stability issues with testing and ubuntu...but testing seems to need to reach a certain stage before it is reasonably usable and as of 29/9/08 build, they reached that stage altho VLC will not play flash movies and totem dies at the end of them....no other gripes tho...and testing *looks* much better than stable both in GNOME and KDE
geek_rua69October 9, 2008, 4:45 pm#120
I think seriouslycgi here uses stable it's meant for enterprise and server use or just end users needing the ultimate in stability. I came to testing because etch wouldn't install properly, and lenny did. Testing is more leading edge and sid is for experienced Debianauts who have to have the latest software and see problems as opportunities (I can see you moving to sid eventually!). I use Totem instead of vlc. What do you mean by Totem dying at the end of flash videos? I do feel multimedia is the ugliest part of Debian and a drag to sort out. I wish there was a single package you could install, with options. It stops me reinstalling to get pure lenny again. Ubuntu and Mint make it so much easier - with Mint everything works right out of the box. However, to me, these distros feel just a bit commercial on the whole and lack something of the general roundedness and elegance that I like about Debian.
geek_0800xfordOctober 9, 2008, 4:51 pm#121
Xubuntu still squabbles with flash from time to time here. imminent zombie warfare...
geek_sirferOctober 9, 2008, 5:48 pm#122
When I play a flash video that I have stolen from youtube, it comes up with "internal data stream error" usually about 5 sec from the end...My boy hates it when "schnappi" stops playing ;o) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=izibSMAQhEY
geek_sirferOctober 9, 2008, 5:50 pm#123
And as for sidhmm...maybe when I upgrade from my "bitsa" desky to a laptop that will run testing which will probably be Lenny stable by the time that happens then the shitta I'm typing this on can be an experimental box;o)
geek_icioufaOctober 9, 2008, 6:38 pm#124
Re 122 2.09 minutes played all the way through on opera 9.60 unbuntu...
geek_icioufaOctober 9, 2008, 7:09 pm#125
Gazzanova69 Re 5 ultamatix.com how does it work for ubuntu being a nOOb right now would like to know the hows & whys & where fors before installing can you expand please...cheers ic
geek_gazzanova69October 9, 2008, 9:47 pm#126
Ultamatix is just an easier way 2 install programs with some programs in ubuntu you have to add the repository to /etc/apt/sources.list , with ultamatix you just tick the programs you wanted to install and click install, for instance i prefer the kde front end rather than the default gnome, usually its a mission preparing ubuntu to install kde but with ultamatix you just tick kde and click install/start, so now i have the option to use kde or gnome p.s. have you pimped out your ubuntu install yet? there is some good themes at gnome-look.org or kde-look.org to get rid of that horrible default brown theme that ubuntu insists on
geek_icioufaOctober 9, 2008, 9:50 pm#127
Done some pimping LOL thanks for answering was also wondering would it inhibit the upgrade to ubuntu 8.10 in amyway...
geek_pixmaOctober 9, 2008, 10:16 pm#128
Icioufa ; Hope Ubuntu is going O.K for you ? Can't wait until the next version of it's out (end of month I think), the stable version that is. Got just the machine lined up for it [evil laugh in here]...lol
geek_icioufaOctober 9, 2008, 10:16 pm#129
Ah just had a read up the suggestion is fresh install so will try your ultamatix d/l cheers what have i got to lose nothing really, just more knowledge ....
geek_icioufaOctober 9, 2008, 10:18 pm#130
Yeah pixma real cool really enjoying it learning & all & especially having opera as well best of both worlds ...lol
geek_sirferOctober 9, 2008, 10:18 pm#131
Re 124 yeah it works thru the web for me to, but if you press ctrl-h to show hidden directories & files & go into /home/.mozilla/firefox/*****.default/Cache the flash file is stored there (**** is u72hbkba.default on my install) then I can cut/copy and paste it to my home dir or whatever. When I try and play this version using totem I get an error. Don't want to keep going to youtube to play schnappi ;o)
geek_pixmaOctober 9, 2008, 10:22 pm#132
Icioufa; So you use antivirus and or a firewall on Ubuntu? I can't feel safe using Ubuntu without either! I suppose that's what years of Windows does to you! lol
geek_icioufaOctober 9, 2008, 10:23 pm#133
Ok miss understood what you were doing sirfer well have installed ultamatix, time to see what extra's i have to play with cheers...ic
geek_sirferOctober 9, 2008, 10:23 pm#134
The thing about Ubuntu is.. ..it's not a PITA for a Windows user with an open mind to adjust to and there's a shitload of support on the web. I don't think I've ever had to ask a question on Ubuntu forums, just google it and there's a thread on ubuntu forums about whatever issue you're having. Really impressive for something that is free
geek_icioufaOctober 9, 2008, 10:25 pm#135
Not Yet pixma as i dont forward or share anything & I'm lead to believe ubuntu has a default firewall ...
geek_icioufaOctober 9, 2008, 10:26 pm#136
Sirfer yes have noticed that already about goggling for ubuntu...
geek_icioufaOctober 9, 2008, 10:42 pm#137
Just for you pixma ultamatix has Clam anti virus & firestarter firewall ...Happy now lol
geek_sirferOctober 9, 2008, 10:45 pm#138
2 Yeah pixma that is a Windows thing. Simply put, windows viruses/malware/spyware etc will not work in Linux because they are programmed to work in the MS environment...Linux is set up differently and while there are Linux viruses about, I have yet to meet one...to confirm this, try running a windows program on Linux or vice versa...it just won't work.
geek_icioufaOctober 9, 2008, 10:52 pm#139
Just rebooted & nothing hit the fan...lol so alls well time to have a play around...
geek_pixmaOctober 9, 2008, 11:02 pm#140
7 never happy...I still would not feel safe lol. But I suppose all.........
geek_icioufaOctober 9, 2008, 11:09 pm#141
FFS has to be safe than M$...
geek_cybertaoOctober 10, 2008, 12:53 am#142
5 Uhh...no, it doesn't come with a firewall by default. But it's redundant if your behind a firewalled adsl router.
geek_icioufaOctober 10, 2008, 6:00 am#143
Yes behind an ADSL router but never felt safe so always had a 3rd party firewall for M$ o/s, but now have installed Clam anti virus & firestarter firewall...
geek_overtounflyerOctober 10, 2008, 6:19 am#144
Ifyou want to be really tight install SELinux https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SELinux it provides very tight control over what can and can't be done on your computer. It's written to the standard outlined by the oh-so paranoid US National Security agency.
geek_gazzanova69October 10, 2008, 8:02 am#145
Linux has the default firewall iptables its basic rules are very good, usually the only port thats open is 22 which is needed for ssh, you can test it out at the Shields UP website https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2 , firestarter is just a front end to control iptables
geek_icioufaOctober 10, 2008, 11:55 am#146
Well the $hit hit the fan lol need to uninstall ultamatix sudo apt-get remove --purge ultimate-edition ultamatix didnt work do you know the command line so i can, wont let me update anymore since installing ultamatixthen i will upgrade to 8.10 beta see how that goes...
geek_woogmoOctober 10, 2008, 12:15 pm#147
Take out the --purge are "ultimate-edition" and "ultamatix" 2 separate programs ?
geek_icioufaOctober 10, 2008, 12:56 pm#148

geek_icioufaOctober 10, 2008, 12:58 pm#149
Woogmo ultimate-edition comes up instead of ubuntu during bootup screen...
geek_icioufaOctober 10, 2008, 12:59 pm#150
But have ultamatix installed...
geek_0800xfordOctober 10, 2008, 2:10 pm#151
saving all your updates? this late in the 'cycle' they are many 300MB or more. ultamtix is cheating :p editing .conf .lst etc is what it's all about.
geek_0800xfordOctober 10, 2008, 2:11 pm#152
yeah, awesome spelling...
geek_sirferOctober 10, 2008, 5:33 pm#153

Just turned opera into the default browser on ubuntu, things are looking up...lol
geek_sirferOctober 10, 2008, 9:04 pm#166
Seethes with jealousy you just wait until you get tweak-happy and try installing something experimental and she all goes to hell ;o) tip for the day, always use a seperate OS partition and make it small for the inevitable fsck'ing
geek_sirferOctober 10, 2008, 9:08 pm#167
Using opera on windows, but it's just not the same...gotta love the full screen(and I mean FULL screen) browsing tho
geek_icioufaOctober 10, 2008, 9:11 pm#168

remember kids, linux = fun :) http://folk.uio.no/hpv/linuxtoons/
geek_nosnibor2October 11, 2008, 10:24 am#171
I tried Ubuntu (off topic slightly)...and then changed to Mandriva with kde desktop (the spring version, ~4.3GB) and everything seems better and easier including setting up a samba share with xp which was all done in a gui as opposed to terminal.
geek_sirferOctober 11, 2008, 10:26 am#172

geek_sirferOctober 11, 2008, 3:18 pm#176
Grr oh ok, doesn't sound like a major...I wouldn't trust ultamatix...but then I don't trust software that does "too much" for me...reminds me of MS...had my backup computer go haywire this morning and now my wireless router isn't working in wireless mode....think i need a new mobo and vid card
geek_icioufaOctober 14, 2008, 12:38 pm#177

Using RC1 on the mrs laptop today Works like a dream...had wireless, compiz and desktop set up within an hour...haven't come across any of the issues that bugged me about 8.04...only thing I don't like is kde4...slow and cranky but then this laptop is 8.5 years old...
geek_sirferOctober 30, 2008, 3:10 pm#192
8 if the current testing is anything to go by Lenny will be awesome too...I have testing on my desky and with each update it keeps on getting better...i saw somewhere on the web where someone had done a graph to predict when lenny would be released and they extrapolated to june 2009, but I believe RC1 is almost finished...can't wait either :o)
geek_0800xfordOctober 30, 2008, 3:21 pm#193
kde gives me a headache, yuk =s i'm pretty keen for xfce 4.4.3. friggin' inkscape turns everything to dust here.

geek_sirferOctober 30, 2008, 6:55 pm#195
