| OKAY!! I am trying to put XBOX Live through my P.C for my son......, right the story, I have BB with Xtra with a D-Link modem and have purchased a ADSL Router so that my son can do the XBOX live thing, his room is 15 meters away from my PC, so have bought a long cable as well. I really do NOT know what I am doing, I dont know how to set this bloody thing up, QUESTION: is this "router" just another modem with 4 outlets? And how do I set it up. I have tried the instruction book but some of the tabs it says are not there. I am running XP. Would appreciate any help, the boy is patiently waiting to play his heart out! Cheers guys |

| Try the 'Computer and Video Gaming' message board, just above this one. They are more experienced with XBOX live, i think :) After all, they are hardcore gamers :) |

| Ummhave you even tried connecting the xbox to your router yet? If the router has DHCP then the xbox should automatically connect to the net without any further input. |

| Yes we had the xbox through the D link and it was fine but we need to run both the pc and the xbox at the same time so they sold me this new router thing, is it just a modem like my d link?? I plugged the new one all in and it wants me to configure it!??? What the! I have no idea how to do that, it was asking me for addresses and passwords and holly cow. Needing a I.T Man right now! :) |

| Ok am asking in gaming Thanks Guys!! |
| geek_lostdude | October 5, 2008, 11:01 pm | #7 |
| Just plug both your PC & xbox into your new modem, then new modem into old one & you should be fine. |
| geek_sandrar | October 5, 2008, 11:02 pm | #8 |
| I will give that a go Right now, thanks!! |
| geek_sandrar | October 5, 2008, 11:03 pm | #9 |
| Oh and the phone cable?? which one is connected to the wall?? |
| geek_lostdude | October 5, 2008, 11:05 pm | #10 |
| Leave the phone cable connected to your old modem |
| geek_sandrar | October 5, 2008, 11:05 pm | #11 |
| Oh my god i think you did it watson!!!! |
| geek_sandrar | October 5, 2008, 11:07 pm | #12 |
| Well we did it and I am still on line and the boy frantically rolling out cable :) |
| geek_lostdude | October 5, 2008, 11:07 pm | #13 |
| Lol & for the record, you didn't need to buy a new modem. A 5 port ethernet switch would've saved you major $$$. |
| geek_sandrar | October 5, 2008, 11:09 pm | #14 |
| A what?? Bloody Dick smith"s, did we just get di#ked? |
| geek_lostdude | October 5, 2008, 11:13 pm | #15 |
| AnEthernet Switch. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_switch & yes, I'm afraid so lol. What are the exact model numbers of your 2 modems? |
| geek_dunedin_ree | October 5, 2008, 11:15 pm | #16 |
| It sounds like they bought a router, lostdude not a new modem. |
| geek_sandrar | October 5, 2008, 11:16 pm | #17 |
| XH9949 DSE ADSL Router 4 port is the new one and DSL 502T D-Link is the old one |
| geek_sandrar | October 5, 2008, 11:17 pm | #18 |
| That was one of the fist questionis a router just a modem?? I know its proll a stupid question but sometimes they call the same thing different names. |
| geek_sandrar | October 5, 2008, 11:21 pm | #19 |
| It cost $50 for a 20 mtr cable and $70 for the router thingie. Boy is now playing LIVE!!!!! thanks!!I will never see him again, oh the pro's and con's! lol |
| geek_lostdude | October 5, 2008, 11:21 pm | #20 |
| Essentially they are one in the same. The point of difference is a "router" has the capability of a "network switch" integrated. But, since you already "had" a modem, the salesman that sold you the new modem/router, was just trying to get a sale and didn't provide you with a proper solution. |
| geek_lostdude | October 5, 2008, 11:24 pm | #21 |
| $50 for a 20m cable? Boy did you get d!#*ed alright lol. Here's 30m for half the price: 179848631 LOOOOL |
| geek_sandrar | October 5, 2008, 11:27 pm | #22 |
| OHHHHHHH NO Far out he must have seen me coming!! what is the price difference between a switch and a router, and would it make a difference to speed for his game? |
| geek_lostdude | October 5, 2008, 11:34 pm | #23 |
| 5 port: 180499994. No real speed difference. You may get better speeds if you configure your new modem/router and just use that, ditching your old modem. But it will only be milliseconds of difference. |
| geek_sandrar | October 5, 2008, 11:34 pm | #24 |
| Ok here is the BIG question Now that we have this thing that we really didn't need, can the "kid" plug it into the phone line he has in his room and I keep the old modem plugged into my pc so I don't have the cable across the house or can one BB connection only be split after it comes into the house. Hope you understand that. |
| geek_sandrar | October 5, 2008, 11:36 pm | #25 |
| OMG $20 He spent $50 He didn't need too! Oh poor little bugger, thats just mean!!! |
| geek_sandrar | October 5, 2008, 11:41 pm | #26 |
| Right so if I buy the new one off him and then I won't feel so bad for him, how do I configure this new thing?? I don;t understand this "Configure " thing. Yes I am blonde |
| geek_lostdude | October 5, 2008, 11:42 pm | #27 |
| Noyou can't have 2 ADSL modems connected at the same time to the same phone line. |
| geek_soodanim | October 5, 2008, 11:46 pm | #28 |
| Dick Smith usually offer 7 day return/refund if you have the receipt, no questions asked (usually) just tell them it was the wrong type of cable. Hopefully you still have the packaging, but I don't even know if that's required as they tend to package their own anyway |
| geek_sandrar | October 5, 2008, 11:48 pm | #29 |
| Thanks so much for all your help Lostdude! I really appreciate it! He spent $120 today and he could have got the same out come for $45. bugger. oh well I should have asked you guys before I took him to buy it. |
| geek_soodanim | October 5, 2008, 11:48 pm | #30 |
| Oppss modem I guess you could also return the cable and buy the cheaper one too...ooopss did I say that. |
| geek_lostdude | October 5, 2008, 11:48 pm | #31 |
| Sorry I would help you with the "configuration" of your new modem/router but alas, I have no experience with DSE equipment (since they're crap) and I need to hit the sack :( Sorry. But for your D-Link modem, if you type 10.1.1.1 into your browser address bar. username/password is admin (they're the defaults) then go to "WAN" on the left menu. That should have all the details you need to put into your new modem/router settings. |
| geek_sandrar | October 5, 2008, 11:51 pm | #32 |
| Lol Thats too funny , i thought of returning it too! Thanks again for all your help! *head drops in sadness*, he has paid $70 for something he didn't need AND it's crap! Bugger. what a shite day! |
| geek_lostdude | October 5, 2008, 11:52 pm | #33 |

| geek_soodanim | October 5, 2008, 11:54 pm | #34 |
| Lol well i did it once, bought a Ethernet cable cos I thought ours was faulty and it turned out it wasn't the cable after all...Took it back, said oppss sorry wrong cable and they refunded no worries....I would suggest you try it...DSE are totally overpriced for most things. |
| geek_sandrar | October 6, 2008, 12:03 am | #35 |

| geek_sandrar | October 6, 2008, 12:08 am | #36 |

| geek_soodanim | October 6, 2008, 12:13 am | #37 |

| geek_sandrar | October 6, 2008, 12:19 am | #38 |

| geek_sandrar | October 6, 2008, 12:27 am | #39 |

| geek_sandrar | October 10, 2008, 3:44 pm | #40 |
