Silly compita A+ question

geek_rudergerOctober 9, 2008, 4:25 pm#1
Silly compita A+ question which of the following video cards would a game enthusiast buy/use? 256mb agp, 256mb pci-express, 256mb pci. there were a few other choices buy I can't remember them. What the hell kind of question is that? Do we assume a "game enthusiast" has the latest hardware so would use pci-express? or is it a bit of a trick question cos the exam is 2007 and agp was still pretty good and is "made for graphics cards". it didn't tell me what the right answer was...I choose pci-express.
geek_wholesalerOctober 9, 2008, 4:27 pm#2
a PCI express card
geek_wholesalerOctober 9, 2008, 4:27 pm#3
Just think of the consumer really, enthusists generally spend more and are up to date hence updated hardware

How about this one http://tinyurl.com/4hb4v2. It would work (kinda)
geek_sirferOctober 9, 2008, 5:07 pm#5
I would go with PCI-Express
geek_kane199October 9, 2008, 5:12 pm#6
Onboard onboard go for the "onboard" option!! btw, that nvidia pci card looks ghastly, pink anyone?
geek_2gd4ubbOctober 9, 2008, 5:17 pm#7
Pcie obv
geek_rudergerOctober 9, 2008, 5:32 pm#8
Yeah seems obvious, but none of the 'study material' talks about pci-express for video cards, just that they are replacing pci and have different speeds, where as the book I read kept saying you need agp if there's no onboard video.
geek_sirferOctober 9, 2008, 5:51 pm#9
pink = bewdiful!
geek_lostdudeOctober 9, 2008, 6:05 pm#10
Ofcourse PCIe is the new AGP. It would have made more sense if they stated the bus speed. i.e. PCIe x16 or x8. And who in there right mind would still use AGP over PCIe in 2007? PCIe came out in 2004.
geek_mechnificentOctober 9, 2008, 6:18 pm#11
Is this a course in computers or physchology? Stupid modern education system!
geek_mush13October 9, 2008, 6:47 pm#12
Well PCI-Express would be the only choice, a gamer would also need a decent cpu, to get this he needs a fairly modern motherboard where as a gamer you would be foolish not to use pci-express. :)

A+ is full of trick questions You just choose the most obvious option for a tech&keep it simple.Dont try to make things difficult, read the questions at face value.Even if the answer seems unlikely, read the premise carefully.Junking a computer was the correct answer to one Q,but a good tech could've fixed it.More economic to get another....
geek_snookimOctober 9, 2008, 8:00 pm#14
Hardly a trick question. Guy walks into your computer shop and says he's into gaming and wants better graphics what are you going to advise, that he gets himself a 256MB PCI graphics card? The tricky part of that question is the limitations set on the answer. In the above real-world scenario, the answer would be: "What sort of computer do you have now [probably has AGP, possibly PCIe], and how much are you willing to spend? [if you want to futureproof - well, as best you can - PCIe is the way to go]"
geek_pcmasterOctober 9, 2008, 8:49 pm#15
Heh said customers existing pc could also have no agp or pcie slots, and all they need is better graphics card!! was in that situation the other week.
geek_kingzzzOctober 9, 2008, 9:41 pm#16
. a real enthusiast would not buy a graphics cards solely based on the information you have given.
geek_rudergerOctober 9, 2008, 9:48 pm#17
Yeah so true a game enthusiast might not be a computer enthusiast, I love games, but I only have a pci-e slot cos my old agp card died and I decided to make a whole new comp instead of just replacing the card. tricks in multichoice i understand but so many questions were like 'which is the best...' or 'which device MAY be causing the problem' hard to know if there's more than 1 right answer sometimes...
geek_pcmasterOctober 9, 2008, 9:50 pm#18
Depends on the context of the question as to the answer they're looking for.
geek_sirferOctober 9, 2008, 10:28 pm#19
Shut up LOL! I'm still using AGP8X with a nVidia GeForce Ti4200 LOL but then I'm not a gamer, just a desktop compositor ;o)
geek_nzoomedOctober 9, 2008, 11:04 pm#20
Ive only got AGP 4x we have been using PCI express for years now! lol
geek_nzoomedOctober 9, 2008, 11:12 pm#21
At work i mean lol
geek_meng8742October 10, 2008, 12:54 am#22
Agp i reackon agp. is a gamer has an old pc then agp.
geek_lostdudeOctober 11, 2008, 6:42 am#23
LOL, but if you _could_ choose, would you still go for AGP? I have no problems with AGP as it was a great standard but hell no would I choose an AGP card over a PCIe one lol.
