Heres a q about old windows..

geek_gbbrotNovember 15, 2008, 11:18 pm#1
Heres a q about old windows.. as you know, Microsoft insists that when you install windows, you should already own a copy of windows. That's why they call it an upgrade. Trouble is, there are almost no original install disks around anymore. So how do you install windows if you don't already own Windows?
geek_friendly_prawnNovember 15, 2008, 11:24 pm#2
Huh? you dont need to upgrade.. they dont insist you already need a copy of windowsAnyone that has never seen or used windows before can go out and buy a fresh copy of windows and isntall it without running an upgrade.. Not sure what you mean?
geek_dunedin_reeNovember 15, 2008, 11:25 pm#3
I guess he means that he wants a copy of Win 98/XP but can't buy it off the shelf.
geek_friendly_prawnNovember 15, 2008, 11:32 pm#4
Just download a fresh copy.. just download a fresh copy of what ever o/s you want to install. Problemo solved, or am I still missing something.. And if your worried about the legalities of it.. There is no way in hell Microsoft is going to chase anyone for downloading a copy of win 98 . just download and do a fresh install..
geek_gbbrotNovember 15, 2008, 11:35 pm#5
What.. I have installed 5 copies of windows this week and every one insisted I demonstrate that I already had windows by putting in the disk.
geek_gbbrotNovember 15, 2008, 11:37 pm#6
And.. if you think I am going to download a full CD disk on my dial up you are crazy.
geek_dunedin_reeNovember 15, 2008, 11:40 pm#7
I don't know what you mean. What computers are you installing these on? Are they "installation" disks or "upgrade" disks? A stand-alone installation disk will NOT ask you to prove you already have windows.
geek_friendly_prawnNovember 15, 2008, 11:43 pm#8
Hmm, ok, what version of windows are you trying to upgrade from too? Rather than doing an upgrade, its probably better to run a fresh install.. I have never played with the upgrade versions.. The guy that originally taught me said they sucked and to run fresh installs instead.. So i have always steered clear of upgrades.. Never used them and never will..
geek_gbbrotNovember 15, 2008, 11:47 pm#9
.. which brings us back to my original question. No, original install disks are scarce as. Alright if you have one of course.
geek_friendly_prawnNovember 15, 2008, 11:47 pm#10
Sorry gbrot.. to clarify, you need to ditch the upgrade version and as dun_din_ree puts it, use a stand alone version.. That will solve your issue.. You wont need to install over an existing O/s.. You can do a clean install if you have the stand alone version.. Hope that explains it better for you..
geek_friendly_prawnNovember 15, 2008, 11:49 pm#11
Hmm, wouldnt have thought they were scarce.. I have a copy of every O/S since 98 first edition.. they are still floating about.. Do you want a copy?
geek_friendly_prawnNovember 15, 2008, 11:50 pm#12
Whoops, slight over exageration.. not vista or server, just talking 98 1st and second editon, and ME, and XP of course..
geek_dunedin_reeNovember 15, 2008, 11:53 pm#13
I'm curious under what circumstances do you go around using (presumably) the same upgrade disk to install Windows on five separate computers? Don't they have any installation media with them?
geek_friendly_prawnNovember 15, 2008, 11:56 pm#14
I was wondering the same thing.. not that it worries me, but if we're talking about the legalities of it.. I think Microsoft are over Win98. lol
geek_dunedin_reeNovember 15, 2008, 11:58 pm#15
Yeah ;) I mean we get rid of old computers at work, and they have the original installation media (not so much 98 any more, but XP home these days). Just wondering how you would come across five in a row that had nothing. Or are they wanting to upgrade from say 98 to XP? Hard to say, "old Windows" could mean anything, including ME or NT4.
geek_friendly_prawnNovember 16, 2008, 12:01 am#16
Actually it never ceases to amaze me the amount of home users that are still running win98.. I was at a friends place the other day and he asked me to look at his pc.. It was running win98 with no antivirus or firewall etc.. Problem is, if I chucked an antivirus solution on it, it would slow the old machine to a grinding halt.. Not much I could say but just make sure all your data is well backed up..
geek_sirferNovember 16, 2008, 6:46 am#17
Yeah haha my mum was running WinME until very recently...
geek_swivelNovember 16, 2008, 8:39 am#18
have an old Floppy boot disk, and when windows looks for the windows (as your using an upgrade disk) it will find the Floppy and all go from there.
geek_kiwikidd77November 16, 2008, 9:57 am#19
I have a couple of disk images of WINDOWS 1.0 if they would be of any use to you.
geek_gbbrotNovember 16, 2008, 10:36 am#20
. I know that. Which is why I started this thread. I have no doubt at all that all of you have at least one install disk tucked away. But some of us don't. Most can get away with using upgrades since at sometime in the past the computer had an original copy of Windows on it. Problem arises when you have to do a complete replacement install such as when replacing the hard drive. If you don't backup or have recovery disks then you have to find a install disk. I can see the time (very soon since I can not find one now) this will be a problem. OK, now is the time for the Linux brigade to pipe up and tell me all about how I don't have to worry as there will always be Linux to fill in the gap.
geek_dunedin_reeNovember 16, 2008, 10:45 am#21
You're a computer tech that doesn't have original installation disks? Why aren't your clients providing you with installation media? I'm still confused.
geek_dunedin_reeNovember 16, 2008, 10:46 am#22
And no there's not always linux to fill the gap. There's begging, borrowing or downloading images.
geek_drcspyNovember 16, 2008, 12:15 pm#23
sounds odd..............i used to have 95a & b and 981st ed, but dunno where they went now (dont need em anyway) but I have 95c, 982nd, winME, win2k (sp4), winMCE, xphomesp2, xpprosp2, and a couple or three versions of vista and a few linux as well......they are what I find I need.....any 'tech' who doesn't have these........well it strikes me as very odd..
geek_kevin16November 16, 2008, 12:27 pm#24
,.. or images of maybe 'tech' is a strectch of the definition, maybe 'hobbyist' is more fitting,.. most who ask here are 'hobbyists',....
geek_d.snellNovember 16, 2008, 2:24 pm#25
Totally Confused Here If you use an upgrade, that's what it is. It checks the HDD for a previous version and then upgrades it. If you have reformatted the HDD and then try to use an upgrade version to install, of course it's going to ask for verification. That's not what an upgrade version is meant to be used for. If you can't provide verification, then tough, use a full version.
geek_d.snellNovember 16, 2008, 2:30 pm#26
Also you say you have installed 5 upgrades this week. I hope they aren't all from the same copy. Surely in this case, it would be cheaper to use OEM's than upgrades anyway.
geek_drcspyNovember 16, 2008, 6:44 pm#27
yeh these days unless i need em they're all iso's........
geek_pcmasterNovember 20, 2008, 8:20 pm#28
I have most of whats listed in except 95c, XPmce, and VistaI haven't got any clients with those to nab copies from (yet), most of my clients have just upgraded to xp within the last 6-12 months, which is kinda good cos it makes it easier for me.
geek_debeerizNovember 20, 2008, 9:35 pm#29
Im dual boot xp and me and me runs faster than xp so i use it the most, its only if i run into a snag that ill reboot into xp
geek_nukhelencNovember 20, 2008, 9:57 pm#30
