Course suggestions anyone???

geek_lilypNovember 18, 2008, 7:08 pm#1
Course suggestions anyone??? I work for a small business, we have 8 computers networked through a small business server. It's blardy tedious for us having to wait on our tech support folks to 'bother' to turn up when things go haywire, so I'm wondering if anyone here could suggest a course/courses I could do to solve this problem. Extramural or online would be easiest (obviously) but I'm open to all suggestions. I have a programming background and am definitely interested in improving the scope of my job. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Would it be easier to get some different tech support folks..?
geek_lilypNovember 18, 2008, 7:18 pm#3
Prolly but where's the fun in that, LOL. I'm in the mood to extend myself that's all, and this seems an ideal way to do that.

What is your current role in the business? In my experience small businesses should stick to their knitting and outsource specialist functions. I suspect your "mood to extend myself" would NOT be in the best interests of the business.

While I agree that trouble-shooting should be left to the experts (esp in a business situation), if you do really want to upskill, I'd suggest looking at A+ for a start. If it's a Microsoft environment then perhaps some of the MSCE papers. if you want to go more general and less industry-focussed, have a look at polytech courses, depending on your current level of expertise. I've never taken any courses at SIT, but they are free and might be a low-cost way of tipping your toe in the water.

Not intending to burst your bubbleand good on you for wanting to advance yourself but enrolling in a course is not going to make you an immediate asset to the business in the short term. You will need to complete and pass a relevant course(s) and then get some practical experience before you can be of much value.

geek_tptraderNovember 18, 2008, 9:14 pm#8
Expendentially ? lmao. Speak english and I might answer your question. By CBT I presume you mean Computer Based Training? I bet I know more TLAs than you do! My skill level was not in question here moron so bugger off.
geek_brian_491November 18, 2008, 9:40 pm#9

Massey University extramural study would probably suit your situation best. They have tonnes of papers available within the IT field. Take a look on their website or contact them and ask to speak to someone who handles IT classes and can recommend a good stepping stone.
geek_tptraderNovember 18, 2008, 9:50 pm#11
You're a bit slow brian isn't that an anagram for brain...not in your case obviously. TLAs because it was plural ie more than one...ie more than the number of brain cells you posses!
geek_lilypNovember 18, 2008, 9:51 pm#12
Thanks I'll take a look.
geek_2gd4ubbNovember 18, 2008, 9:52 pm#13
Brian, don't be absurd. Any quality education provider will advise students of the boring CBT nuggets anyway.
geek_brian_491November 18, 2008, 9:56 pm#14
Cbt nuggets are boring well you learn of them dont yah dont be absurd your an idiot
geek_brian_491November 18, 2008, 9:59 pm#15
And what quality education provider do you speak of? and what do you know about cbt nuggets what videos have you watched??
geek_brian_491November 18, 2008, 10:02 pm#16
Yeah plural more than one got it! I got past "3"trades plural- meaning more than one without a blue face for feedback yeah wasnt that hard.if I have a few braincells you must be brain dead?
geek_tptraderNovember 18, 2008, 10:08 pm#17
Hello! "well you learn of them dont yah dont be absurd your an idiot" can I presume to translate. well you learn from them don't you, don't be absurd, you're an idiot. And the old misnomer of the message board that the number of trades completed equals intellect. Go back to school.
geek_brian_491November 18, 2008, 10:11 pm#18
It equals honesty, smarts etc something you lack, its amazing you cant act so smart with your written english but cant get to 3 trades without getting a blue face nice one buddy, anyways peace out vent over my bad and goodnite
geek_2gd4ubbNovember 18, 2008, 11:00 pm#19

geek_rhys.mNovember 19, 2008, 9:31 am#21
What does this thread have to do with the price of fish anyway?
geek_sirferNovember 19, 2008, 3:07 pm#22
It's a well known fact that IT folk can afford the price of fish ...

Re1 from the breif description of your setup, A+, Network+ and MCSA (NOT MCSE as mentioned earlier) would be of benefit. But the problem with these courses is they dont provide real world experience, and practising on a live production enviroment is not a good idea. I would suggest you find another support company, or your next new employee have some advanced computer skills but be willing to do other work within the company (office manager/it person)

geek_brian_491November 19, 2008, 6:21 pm#25
Bang on matthew a+ n+ im hust finishing my N+ atm is great Ive been doing pc repairs etc for ages but just thought recently I should get a cert
geek_matthew_129November 19, 2008, 7:23 pm#26
A+and net+ are fine for basic trouble shooting/setup of SOHO setupsbut in poster 1's situation where they also have a windows 2003 small business server, an MCSA (Mircosoft Certified Systems Administrator)cert or at least the training would be useful. As things change dramatically when you start using domains, and exchance, and what ever else they may be running and balls ups can cause things to go horribly wrong. If you screw up the server you cant just format it and start again like you can with a PC. there is alot of data, and it can be fragile in the wrong hands.
