Best free, or best that costs? some of the payware ones are a bit better, but none are 100%, I'm guessing the best might pick up 90% of viruses. Trojans are a different story again.

To get very good protection from malware of all types, see the recommendations here http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=44525

If you are using Nortons make sure you scan with something else like AVG. Avast, Malwarebytes to pick up the bugs Norton misses,,,You couldn't pay me to use it, I have been into Computers 15 years am A+ certified and running my own IT fix and build PC's. The last time I tested Norton against free AVG, Norton missed 7 x Trojans that AVG nailed.

There is no *best* anti-virus. And if your computer is playing up due to viral activity, it's probably to late - not all the damage done to the operating system can be repaired. An anti-virus is best used to protect you from getting infected to begin with. And regardless of what anti-virus you use, the best form of protection is to take care what you download and what pages you visit.

Well this is why you should do a backup on a PC with a new XP install a registry backup etc so if all else fails you dont waste a key.But if I was to reccomend some software thats good and free Id go AVG with spybot search and destroy and for the firewall go zone alarm

I wouldn't listen to he is rude, tries to ridicule people and really says nothing. I have had absolutely no problems at all with Norton and it doesn't slow my computer as people seem to say. I have however, had problems with most of the free ones. This is my experience, and thats as valid as the next persons :-)
