Problem with new wireless modem We just received a free modem from xtra, and I set it up fine, and it works ok plugged into the pc, but whenever I use the laptop wirelessly and connect to the net, the connection will only last about 30 secs, then I will need to repair it. After I repair it, it just stops again after 30 seconds. What gives? I'm led to believe it's something to do with my laptop, as my brother's laptop works fine with it.

You probably have "Allow computer to turn off this device to save power" ticked.

Right click your wireless connection bottom right, of toolbar, open network connections, right click wireless network connection, click properties, click configure, top right under power management, untick allow computer to turn off device. Then OK.

While you are at it, in the same "configure" area, increase your transmit power (under advanced tab)and reduce your roaming aggressiveness and increase the slider for power management. If all that fails to help, update your wireless card driver.

To do that, right click your computer, choose properties, hardware, device manager, network adapters (click on the cross to open em up) then right click on your card name and choose update driver. If that fails, google your network card and "driver" and do it manually. You can always choose "roll back driver" if you screw it up. :)

Note: procedure may vary in Win Vista...I have no idea how to do it in that.

Been through and checked the rest of the settings? Or have you got any electronic devices nearby like phones or fridges?

Could also try a different channel on your router.

But since your friends laptop worked, it probably won't help. I'm betting a driver update will.
