AVG, I know this has been said heaps of times

geek_deb158November 19, 2008, 2:00 pm#1
AVG, I know this has been said heaps of times but how do I fix it when it says 'update manager, the connection has failed'? thanks
geek_swivelNovember 19, 2008, 2:31 pm#2
Well. Try again later, as The server is probably busy or http://free.avg.com/faq.num-1236
geek_soodanimNovember 19, 2008, 2:39 pm#3
Yep try later tho it's been happening more and more...every other day it doesn't update...ggrrrr AVG. I might change.
geek_deodarNovember 19, 2008, 2:57 pm#4
Well that's really encouraging...I just loaded it off a CD.Perhaps I won't install it after-all
geek_julieandcasperNovember 19, 2008, 3:46 pm#5
I'd recommend against itas it seems to get more bad press on here than any other AV. I got fed up with it some months ago and installed Avast on the man's PC.
geek_sighkickNovember 19, 2008, 4:07 pm#6
I don't use AVG myself butI have clients who are now complaining that the Email Scanner is showing as DISABLED. Is anyone else having trouble with the email scanning part of AVG? The rest seems to be working though and I did 'fix' it once by re-installing AVG. - - - - - - - - - - - - - p.s. I use Symantec Corporate AV and have also installed ClamWin and AVAST! on other networked computers or Virtual Machines. AVAST! is a hoot - every day I hear a man's voice telling me that 'Your Virus database definitions have been updated' - it's a Dell Optiplex computer with an internal speaker.
geek_zak410November 19, 2008, 4:25 pm#7
Dont use it with zone alarm it kills it regularly, recently with " trojan horse agent_r.cx, google it!
geek_sighkickNovember 19, 2008, 4:27 pm#8
The one I mentioned aboveDoesn't use Zonealarm - but may use Spybot S&D. I will use Google to check if there are any other solutions like the one you suggest there Zak.
geek_swivelNovember 19, 2008, 6:44 pm#9
Zak410 LOL. Never happened to my systems (9 game servers, 3 netcafe and my 3)(all run avg and ZA). The big thing is to CHANGE the Update time from the std. As then you won't get the over load.
geek_swivelNovember 19, 2008, 6:45 pm#10
Sighkick go into the e-mail part, and tell AVG what the E-mail program is. Easy
geek_zak410November 19, 2008, 9:52 pm#11
For you swivel http://tech.blorge.com/Structure:%20/2008/10/14/agent_rcx-trojan-horse-solution-avg-false-posit<br />ive/ and that's one instance, happened to me,using avg and za both free though.it happens a lot and you always disgard it but you are no using free avg, are you
geek_intradeNovember 19, 2008, 11:27 pm#12
Deodar use avast far better and talks cool. !warning! a virus has been detected lol and database has been updated.....
geek_amiri1November 19, 2008, 11:58 pm#13
Get Antivir instead! Much better program!!
geek_swivelNovember 20, 2008, 8:47 am#14
Zak410 Never been fussy about free, But I use the Rego versions, (Guess thats why I don't have problems).
geek_nonick27November 20, 2008, 10:18 pm#15
I got AVG 8.0 a month ago had nothing but problems since i got it,not updateing, scaning for 6 hours, sceduled scans not working,e mail scans not working and the list goes on
geek_pete48November 20, 2008, 10:30 pm#16
Hi Deb Same message. Have tried all night to update. Got f*&ked off in the finish and at the moment downloading Avast. It's a bit like power suppliers, if you aren't getting the goods, go elsewhere...Peter
geek_swivelNovember 20, 2008, 10:52 pm#17
Nonick27 with that many problems it sounds very much like a PEBKAC problem. Best you get clamwin
geek_selfdestructiveNovember 23, 2008, 10:55 am#18
.......Personally I hate avg cuz it picks virtually anything up as a virus (especially core windows files) and not only that it can be a bitch to update aswell as manually updating. Ive gone away from AVG and stuck with avast cuz its user friendly, light, not a pain in the ass to update and it doesnt pick up necessary files and core windows files as trojans.
geek_pixmaNovember 23, 2008, 11:16 am#19
AVG is junk...plain and simple!
geek_swivelNovember 23, 2008, 12:02 pm#20
Yeah Pixma That from you holds no weight, as after the last question you asked "does a PCI-e graphics card fit into a PCI slot" Not sure if you should have a PC. LOL
geek_swivelNovember 23, 2008, 12:05 pm#21
Selfdestructive Wrong. It picks up on the Cookies. Tracking and holding info etc. And doesn't mark them as virus's, but in the Spyware part
geek_gsdz4meNovember 23, 2008, 12:16 pm#22
I have not long had AVG after getting rid of Nortons which I had had for nerly 4 years and I find it good. I dont scan the pc alot with a scan, maybe once a month if I feel like it. But I only use my PC for basic stuff so it seems to suit my needs for now. And I understand sometimes about the updating but I leave it and it keeps attempting and when it gets in it updates so I dont have a problem with that either knowing that this may happen as it is a popular programme so has lots of pcs all trying to get the updates together. So for now I am happy with sticking with it.
geek_pixmaNovember 23, 2008, 12:17 pm#23
very hard day
geek_kevin16November 23, 2008, 12:20 pm#24

geek_swivelNovember 23, 2008, 2:01 pm#27
NoJust a Mazda. Which spends most of the Time parked up behind my Computer Shop.
geek_kevin16November 23, 2008, 2:04 pm#28
Interesting,.. as you show all the signs of 'small mans syndrome',.. maybe the shop is your 'big car',....
geek_swivelNovember 23, 2008, 2:08 pm#29
Why would that be. ? I comment on What I know, 'small mans syndrome' would suggest I live in Huntly. 8-)
geek_swivelNovember 23, 2008, 2:09 pm#30
And small mans syndrome LOL. I'm not a Kiwi, and Have 11 kids by the way.
geek_kevin16November 23, 2008, 2:11 pm#31
Lol,.. You wouldn't survive in Huntly, we have standards, you probably don't even own a pair of red-bands,must be hard to be a reseller of software that 'used' to be pretty good,..
geek_swivelNovember 23, 2008, 2:32 pm#32
Not Hard As I Set it up as well. No problems with the Rego'd Version. More of an Enter Enter Enter when installing and not reading.
geek_0800xfordNovember 23, 2008, 2:35 pm#33

now you're just bragging ha ha ha =p
geek_pheonixNovember 23, 2008, 4:23 pm#38
I'm really surprised you find time/energy to work on computers apart from "bedtime". LOL And is it the amount of kids that cause you to keep parked up at your shop? The upkeep and/or maintenance must be a killer.
geek_swivelNovember 23, 2008, 5:38 pm#39
Pheonix Have to work to cover costs LOL. otherwise it's all good. As I live for the day.
geek_zak410November 23, 2008, 5:39 pm#40
Makes you wonder though, the problems like killing zone alarm free only happens with the free version of avg? and not the paid version, same company? aggressive marketing perhaps!
geek_0800xfordNovember 23, 2008, 5:40 pm#41
you'll never mow another lawn or wash another dish ever again ha ha
geek_pheonixNovember 23, 2008, 5:54 pm#42
I can understand that sentiment I just wonder whether I'm doing something wrong? I have managed to keep the same woman for 34 yearsMaybe it's the fear of being mauled if I left her...LOL. If your not born NZ swivel, where you from? (If you don't mind me asking).
geek_swivelNovember 23, 2008, 6:31 pm#43
Hello Ireland, and my first wife has Passed away. zak410. Maybe it's more to do with ZA (than AVG). ZA8 isn't as nice as the late 7 series. 0800xford yeah right, thats a TUI add. I cook and do the dishes. as only havce the 5 and 3 1/2 at home (oh and Wife 2)
geek_kevin16November 23, 2008, 7:46 pm#44
Got your hands full swivel,. feel I know you a little better now, which is great!, and we actually turned the thread into something more than a 'gimme help' thread,..
geek_0800xfordNovember 23, 2008, 7:49 pm#45
heh agreed =) too often they degenerate into regulars attacking each other after the OP is long gone.
geek_swivelNovember 23, 2008, 8:25 pm#46
LOL .
geek_chickflick-divaNovember 23, 2008, 8:27 pm#47
The new avg 8.0 is horrible.. takes for ever to scan!
geek_swivelNovember 23, 2008, 8:28 pm#48
Turn off the Spyware scanner. Or slide the scanner speed over. http://free.avg.com/faq.num-1236
geek_nonick27November 23, 2008, 8:41 pm#49
