Internet access

Internet access We have a desktop pc with broadband access. My daughter has just purchased a notebook for herself. What do we need to do to enable her to have internet access on the notebook. I presume we need to get something wireless but have no idea what is needed.

provided the laptop is equipped with wifi, you'd need a wireless access point, which plugs into the router

or a network cable snaking around the room.

Itll be easier for you to go into the likes of dick smith or harvey norman and ask them as they can point it out to you. you dont have to buy it off them but just so you can get a picture in your head

Who says they need to buy seems to have ascertained whether they might already have wireless router ?....

Unplug the desktop ethernet or USB cable from the router and instead plug that into the laptop. There, that wasn't hard at all. Thankfully you didn't want BOTH to have internet access...

does your ADSL modem have extra ports for another Network cable ?? if not then maybe another ADSL with wireless or get a wireless switch/hub

geek_swivel, Jan 21, 10:57 pm

And does the laptop have onboard wifi?

geek_ross1970, Jan 21, 10:59 pm

Yes laptop does have onboard wifi

If you have the basic moden the ISP gave you. You will be better off upgrading to a ADSL+2 Modem Router with wireless,,,,, a lot less hassel than some "wireless access point" setups.

ring your isp and see how much if anything it'll cost you to get them to upgrade you to a wireless adsl router rather than the model you have now.....
