Skype is disconnecting my LAN!!! Anyone know what causes this? ive installed skype heaps on clients machines heaps, but this is the first time ive used it on my PC! lol! i dont know why i havnt been using it earlier. Anyway, as soon as i installed it on my computer, it disconnected my lan and the computer sort of freezes and runs slow, then comes right on its own after a few minuites, and disconnects again, if you unplug the ethernet port its OK when you plug it back in, but you still have to wait a while once its OK its good, but its a bugger of a problem. on the internet i see heaps of forums, some say that your router can cause issues with firmware etc, but that only applied to linksys. im using a siemmens with win2k

Are you using the new V4.0or 3.8? .

Im using 4.0.0.206 which is the latest as far as im aware. i just ran it now to check the verson and it dumped the LAN again. surley the router firmware would not have anything to do with this? i have been able to make successful video calls once the internet gets up and running.

I suggest you drop back to V3.8. A lot of people are having issues with it. Clicking on this link will start the 3.8 download: http://www.skype.com/go/getskype-accessibility

Ive downloaded 3.8 and it works OK but it still tempoery disconnected my LAN for about 5 seconds when starting skype, then all was OK, is this normal? im starting to think its hooking something related to VOIP to the network drivers? does anyone else know?

Your local network, or your internet connection? Do you use Wifi? I can only suggest checking out the forum: http://forum.skype.com/index.php?s=42f74b63cd5d7ca5116844ee53eed07c&showforum=2

My LAN is only my ethernet port to my router im not using a switch or hub or any WAP as of yet. I dont think its normal, unless skype mention that. Do you think it could be related to firmware on the router?

Perhaps, it's drop outs? Are you making a call at the time?
geek_nzoomed February 26, 2009, 10:46 pm
#11
No im not making any calls it only will do this when skype starts on bootup, or if i manually start skype if it has been closed down, the good news is the older version is not as bad, but the lan still will show disconnected for 5 seconds or so and then is fine afterwards, and the computer doesnt hang for ages. whatever it is, it appears that skype is messing around with the network drivers, i have found others with the same problem, but no one really seems to know what it is and some are suggesting updating the firmware on the router etc, i honestly dont know how that would do anything.

Do you just use port 80 and 443 or do you port forward?
geek_nzoomed February 27, 2009, 9:33 am
#13
I dont have any port forwarding set in my router at this stage, as i thought it didnt need it as long as port 80 is open as its VOIP. isint it supposed to work as straight packets over IP without needing another port open? i will try opening 443 anyway, it seems OK today but i wasnt there to see if it disconnected my LAN.

You don't need to port foward. I think you'll find that your calls are better. Only one of the callers needs to have a port forwarded.

Ok thats interesting i havnt had any problems with calling, sound quality is good, sometimes it breaks up, but generally its been good if the person i call has a good connection. if we had faster internet with faster upload speeds, it would be great to see higher quality video calls. my play station eyetoy camera seems to be far better quality than my friends cameras when they call me.

Eye Toy!!! I keep forgetting to try my mine. Maybe this weekend I might try it.

Theres modified dlink and logitech drivers that work with the eye toy camera, personally i think its the best webcam ive come across, and has a microphone too! saves me going to buy a "webcam" ive had trouble with some of the drivers so you may have to play around, just make sure you download the correct ones for your model. ive found the logitech ones work better, the dlink ones seem to drop off for whatever reason.

Its acting worse again today im going to look into this, and see if its a driver issue etc. it should not be messing around with my connection at all, seems quite an uncommon problem whatever it is

"allow windows to turn this off to save power" ?
geek_nzoomed February 28, 2009, 5:19 pm
#22
Ive just checked that and that was enabled Ive just unchecked that option now. does skype mess around with power management? as thats the only thing that i can think that would it would be related to, i dont have any power saving schemes turned on anyway, and my network has never dropped off previously to this. ill let you know if this works.

It might depends if it's the system itself or dodgy router firmware that doesn't like skype traffic. I once ran into a USRobotics router that didn't like SIP for some reason. Start up XLite or Ekiga or plug in an ATA adapter and the router would immediately freeze solid and need a reboot to get started again. True story.

I belelive it i have read up that this happened with linksys routers, but our ISP said they have no records of it happening with my particular router, beats be

Open Skype Goto "Tools", "Options", "Advanced", "Connection" and then uncheck "Enable UPnP", Click "Save", "Exit" Skype and restart it. Your problem should be gone!

Enjoy .....
