#1 | | How do you find out where an email came from? If someone sends you an email say from a yahoo.com address, is there anyway to find out where this email came from? To explain, I am getting emails from someone "xxxx"@yahoo.com and they say that they live in America but I am having doubts and are suspicious that they live here in New Zealand...so is there any way of finding this out....sorry for being long winded but is the best way that I can explain this. Thank you

#2 | | get them holding an american newspaper with todays date on it in a photo and send it to you, local rags are better as it's an unlikely item that can be found anywhere else. |

#4 | | Check out the full headers option it should show you the computer ip they used to send the email from, then run a whios on that ip, they might be sending from a proxy though so it would give a false result. one way is to set up an image on a server of yours send them the image and when they open the email their ip/computer will download the image too (hopefully) then that will give you their actual ip (as most proxies wont do ssl and youd have to be stupid to use such a service) but there are ways around this as well if they are paranoid. |

#14 | | Step by step instructions coming up. 1 - Open up this site - http://aruljohn.com/track.pl . 2 - Open your mail. 3 - right click on the letter you want to trace. Click Properties then Details. The IP number is found in there (usually on the line starting "Received From" and is prefixed by a ([. 4 - Copy that and paste it into the tracking box on the tracking site you have already opened. Click Start Track and Bob's your uncle. |

#15 | | The IP number should look something like this: ([123.45.67.8. In other words it is a four digit number with each number separated by a dot. Just paste the number not the brackets. I hope this is informative. Let me know how you get on. |

#16 | | Sorry for the delay in reply I understand the procedure..it is the very first part that stumps me. I am using Microsoft Outlook. When I right click on the email the drop box that appears has "properties" greyed out..I can not click on it. Or am I still doing something stupid...hope I am not having a blonde moment..I appreciate your help I am sure that it is just something simple that I am doing wrong. Thanks

#17 | | I haven't used Outlook for over a year now however, here are some suggestions. 1. Click - File and see if Properties is in there. 2. Don't open the e-mail, just right click on it from the list in your inbox (that is what I did). Other suggestion is to ask Help - Try asking 'e-mail properties'. |

#18 | | If they are asking for money or ever do ask for money then they are a scammer no matter what they say. Tell them you want to talk with them on skype and then you will see if they have an american accent or not. |

#19 | If you are not having any luck on the route I suggested try this site. It tracks e-mails you have sent to find out about the recipient. http://www.pointofmail.com/?gclid=CL3S1Ou3oZoCFZUvpAodtUFc8w
. If you are not having any luck try finding properties on other e-mails that you know the sender of. If you can do this then you can draw only one conclusion - namely that your correspondent has gone to considerable lengths to hide his IP number and is therefore someone you should consider as highly suspect and draw your own conclusions. |

#20 | | Re: 19 not neccesarily, GMAIL hides the original senders IP in the header replacing it with a google owned IP. An average person would not even know this and would not be trying to hide their IP this way (as they probably dont even know about IP addresses etc) |

#21 | I can't find the "properties" of any email within Microsoft Outlook..not just this one that I am suspicious of. This person is not asking for money or anything..just someone I got to know but I am suspicious that they do not live where they say they do..I know this sounds a bit childish but it is as it is :-)
So it is finding "properties" within Microsoft Outlook that is my problem now..and I have tried just about everything even using the "help" but I jsut get the email addres and who it is from..not the [xxxx] etc |

#22 | | Hi. There are two tabs on the Properties box - General and Details. Did you open the Details one like I suggested? Your remarks are not very helpful. Could you please give more info on what it is you are actually doing. |

#24 | OK your 1st suggestion here are some suggestions. 1. Click - File and see if Properties is in there. 2. Don't open the e-mail, just right click on it from the list in your inbox (that is what I did). Other suggestion is to ask Help - Try asking 'e-mail properties'.
If I don't open the email and click on "file" there is no properties sub file available |

#25 | | 2nd sugestion If I right click on the email once opened I can get 'outlook properties" from the file, if I open this all it gives me is the actual email address and how the person who sent me the email wants me to see their name,,eg Joe Smith, joe@hotmail.com. That is all. So I think I have followed your directions as you have explained (many thanks) but I am not getting the drop down bowes that you are expecting |

#30 | Thanks so much sexylady That's what I was looking for.
However when I try it it just comes up with "10.80.49.1" on several of the emails (from differnt people including people I know) and when I enter this code it comes up with "This is a private IP address, no country associated" so I suppose I am no further along. How come most of my emails have the same IP address code 10.80.49.1 ???? even though from different people with different addresses. Thanks everyone for your help
