Slow computer when first starting up

geek_etta1May 19, 2009, 2:03 pm#1
Slow computer when first starting up Here I go again. When I start my computer it loads in about one and a half minutes. Thats okay with me. When I then go to load Outlook Exp. it takes ages to load or IE the same. I have 16 programmes sitting on the taskbar at the bottom of the screen. How do I take some of these off as could this be causing the slowness in my computer. Once I get to TM the slowness disappears or anywhere else on the net. I look forward to your answers to assist in my problem. Thanks.

Alot of factors could be involved here if you are trying to load a web page just after booting up your pc? then it maybe that the specs (ram, cpu speed etc) of your pc arent to hot & things are still loading up alot longer than you think. What OS are you using? If XP? you could click on "Start" and go to run. In the run box type in "msconfig" and press ok, Now click on the "startup" tab, it lists all the programs that are set to startup when windows starts. To remove an item just remove the tick from the box next to the appropriate item. You can also click "disable all" to remove all items. If you are unsure what an item is? the easiest way to find out is to type it into google and do a search. Or you could use ccleaner to manage your startup items aswell.

Ah i knew i copied that from somewhere ill just link to that from now on 0800 ;)
geek_0800xfordMay 19, 2009, 2:24 pm#5
=p need to add some tweakui etc type tools too maybe
geek_0800xfordMay 19, 2009, 2:41 pm#6
added another page [ http://tm-wiki.info/content/tweaking-enhancement-tools ] i don't generally use this type of tool, excluding blackviper, but if anyone KNOWS of some good stuff that needs addingdo tell =]
geek_pcfix4uMay 19, 2009, 2:53 pm#7
What antivirus programs are you using ?????
geek_byteworksMay 19, 2009, 2:56 pm#8
SlowWhats the specs of your computer (RAM CPU etc)
Click onto Start - right click onto my computer and go to properties and that should tell you this stuff.

Having 16 things down the botton is bound to cause a few issues!

Right click on one of them and there should be an exit option which will close it down.

You can also use MSCONFIG (start - run, type in MSCONFIG and press enter) and unselect certain start-up items, but this is a slightly advanced setting so be careful!

Ummcause it saves typing the same answers time & time again ;) & my typing sucks.
geek_icioufaMay 19, 2009, 6:47 pm#12
This is IMHO the way to use ccleaner http://www.tm-wiki.info/content/windows click on (also see the Ccleaner instruction page)
geek_etta1May 19, 2009, 9:07 pm#13
Hi all specs for my computer XP, SP3, 504MB Ram
Intel Celeron CPU 2.80GHZ
Intel 82915G/GV/910GL Express Chipset Family
Got all those details on the start up page of the Ccleaner.
I have tried the Msconfig, but not sure which ones to stop working in case the computer has a hissy fit.
I have Avast AV on computer.
Also spybot and Adaware cleaner.
The other day I downloaded Advanced Systemcare and that speeded the computer quite a bit at the time but now has slowed down again. Did a clean last night through the Safe Boot area but that picked up nothing. Hopes this helps you to figure out what is happening. Maybe my computer is getting old as I have had it about 4yrs!
geek_etta1May 19, 2009, 9:34 pm#14
Also on computer I have the Comodo firewall. Dont go to game sites so computer not filled up with games. Have quite a few photos on it. No films which would take up a lot of space.
geek_brummoiMay 19, 2009, 10:41 pm#15
You may have a number of programs auto-updating at startup or when computer first accesses internet. You should see these under startup items or possibly services
geek_icioufaMay 20, 2009, 5:43 am#16
Did you use those links in to identify each application that loads, if it's a desktop you are using you only really need only your 3rd party firewall & any realtime anti virus/spyware protection that starts up the rest you can safely disable ,but use those links to identify each item 1st IMO ...
geek_icioufaMay 20, 2009, 5:52 am#17
If you use ccleaner to disable items you can still use the said applications or you can re-enable with a click of a button on ccleaner ...
geek_feritaMay 20, 2009, 6:03 am#18
Www.snapfiles.com/get/starter.html get that.
geek_icioufaMay 20, 2009, 7:04 am#19
Have used that one myself ferita but maybe a little to advanced for someone just starting out learning how to control startup items & services....there are others as well i could offer, but chose ccleaner as its a lot easier to use to turn on/off applications IMO
geek_drcspyMay 20, 2009, 7:30 am#20
In msconfig/startup tab just Untick everythign except your antivirus and firewall....you wont do any harm and you can always re-enable some later if you want
geek_icioufaMay 20, 2009, 7:34 am#21
The only problem i see with msconfig is M$ still checks through msconfig at startup to see what needs to start which IMO slows down the starting of the o/s...
geek_icioufaMay 20, 2009, 7:36 am#22
& when you look at the list on msconfig it can be bloody long when you can delete/disable using ccleaner....
geek_icioufaMay 20, 2009, 7:37 am#23
Which then removes it from msconfig...
geek_etta1May 20, 2009, 9:53 am#24
16. Yes I went to the Wiki pages and had a good read about problems. Went into the startup items in the Ccleaner and disabled a lot of programmes from there. Much easier than doing it through the msconfig as that a bit confusing. When you say "3rd party firewall" do you mean the Comodo firewall I am using? If I keep using the Comodo firewall can I turn off the firewall which came with XP programme? I right clicked on a lot of icons on the task bar and exited them and they vanished off the taskbar but then came back when I started the computer up again. Will I also need to disable these at the startup?
geek_mysteryman007May 20, 2009, 9:56 am#25
Yes you can disable windows firewall etta1 as you have a better one anyway (comodo). Also right clicking & closing on the task bar will start them back up after reboot. so if you really dont want them going, then disable via ccleaner.
geek_etta1May 20, 2009, 9:56 am#26
Forgot to say computer much faster now. Thanks for your help really appreciate it.
geek_mysteryman007May 20, 2009, 9:57 am#27
Glad we could help :) ....
geek_icioufaMay 20, 2009, 10:53 am#28
Ditto disabling from ccleaner will stop them loading at startup, you can re-enable them at anytime your 3rd party firewall is comodo & once you know what each are you can delete them from the list if you like ,they will all still working when you click on them in all programs, the m$ firewall normals disable itself when a 3rd party firewall is installed it not you can go start/run type in services.msc scroll down to windows firewall double click when it opens use drop down to disable...
geek_0800xfordMay 20, 2009, 1:57 pm#29
that was almost coherent english "kolb" well done.
geek_etta1May 20, 2009, 2:06 pm#30
Another little question I see on the taskbar there is an icon called VRDB Generator - this is in addition to the Avast icon. Should I take the VRDB generator icon off the taskbar or leave it there. Thanks.
geek_0800xfordMay 20, 2009, 2:26 pm#31
well without googling that, it sounds like a virus database reporting app, correct? it's bound to slow stuff down [and now i'll google it to see if i was right]
geek_mysteryman007May 20, 2009, 2:31 pm#32
Correct 0800 ;) you dont need to run all the time. The suggestion is to run it every few weeks to update the database so in order to build a data base of your files so they can be restored if a virus should attack.
geek_0800xfordMay 20, 2009, 5:39 pm#33
good guess aye, amazing what can be achieved by GOOGLING, even after the fact. how many threads will you be starting this week etta? 10, 20? more? you need a computing course [i'm not joking]
geek_icioufaMay 20, 2009, 8:45 pm#34
BUTT you are the joke 0800....
geek_etta1May 21, 2009, 4:45 pm#35
Haha 0800 Have been working with computers for about 18yrs but not with the guts of the computers. Trying now to fix my own computer instead of taking to a technician and paying out mega bucks like I used to do. I have only had 3 questions on the noticeboard in the last week so dont be so smart. Just because you know a thing or two about the workings of computers not everyone is so clever like you.
geek_etta1May 21, 2009, 5:09 pm#36
32. Thanks for the info. When I downloaded Avast it was never mentioned about the generator also being downloaded. One can only learn by asking the professionals. Thanks.
geek_missy_j.cMay 22, 2009, 8:47 pm#37
Hi, i am having many issues aswell.. have just downloaded the ccleaner, now i got to go to safe mode to do the scan, but cant remeber which ( F ) button to push in startup to get to safe mode, havent used this mode in ages! lol
geek_etta1May 22, 2009, 8:55 pm#38
Missy_j.c. I have found the easiest way to go to safe mode is click start, run and type in MSCONFIG in the box and click OK. Then click on the Boot.INI tab and check the SAFEBOOT option and then click ok and restart when prompted. The computer starts in safe mode. When finished with trouble shooting in safe mode, open MSCONFIG again, and on the BOOT.INI uncheck SAFEBOOT click Ok and click OK to restart computer. Hope this helps.
geek_drcspyMay 22, 2009, 9:04 pm#39
Much easier to tap F8 repeatedly right from when you press the power button on the pc....you'll get a menu screen use your arrow key to go up to 'safe mode' then tap enter twice.....after wards to get out of safe mode just restart the pc...oh and you really dont need to be in safe mode to use ccleaner it'll work fine in normal windoze
geek_drcspyMay 22, 2009, 9:51 pm#40
Also you are presupposing that they have an operating system which HAS 'msconfig' ...(windows 2000 didn't) and they they HAVE the 'run' command on their start menu, (many pc's dont unless it's setup)
geek_missy_j.cMay 23, 2009, 1:11 pm#41
I downloaded the ccleaner and it removed somethings, now i am just trying to sort out my stupid avg, and tr make it do updates again! , it has been playing up since 14th may, so i think i need to take it into the shop!!!
geek_mysteryman007May 23, 2009, 1:19 pm#42
Why missy_j.c? if they cant fix it, all they will do is install another free AV scanner & say your prob was unfixable & charge you for something you could have done for free. I ditched AVG at the start of the year after years of use & no probs. But asoon as i tried avast i was astounded what a difference it has made. Try another free AV scanner, avast or avira would be my recommendation. & also what ive seen, if your AV suddebly stops updating for no reason, it maybe because you have malware that an update maybe able to fix so the virus stops it from doing it so you cant remove it.
geek_missy_j.cMay 23, 2009, 1:26 pm#43
Yea i think i am going to have to change a-v so what is the best free one other than avg?
i need somehting asap, as i am sick and tired of not doing scans and freaking out thta i might let somehting into my computer..
i need a antivirus program that actually works! and works well!!! lol , oh and is free!! haha!
geek_mysteryman007May 23, 2009, 1:38 pm#44
I use avast now also avira is good, but i havent tried it myself. but a number of regular messageboarders swear by it & say it uses alot less resources on your pc. Checkout this link for the sites to download them from [ http://tm-wiki.info/content/antivirus ].
geek_mysteryman007May 23, 2009, 1:40 pm#45
Also they are both free you will need to register to get a key for avast. as it will run for 60 days or something like that till you put the key in that avast will send you to your email.
geek_missy_j.cMay 23, 2009, 1:48 pm#46
So avast is still free? or is a trial period??? untill you buy the upgraded version?
geek_mysteryman007May 23, 2009, 2:10 pm#47
Nope still free as far as i know you get a 60 day trial or something similar, but if you register they will send you a key that you can enter & i it gives you a years use for free.
geek_mysteryman007May 23, 2009, 2:36 pm#48
Just checked avast site it has 60 day trial but if you register they will send a key that will give it 1,2 or 3 years of use.
geek_mysteryman007May 23, 2009, 2:43 pm#49
Ah crap! :S sorry reading wrong page lol. it is 60 day trial, if you reg you get a key that is valid for a year, & you just need to reregister each year after that to keep using it for free.
