* Linux Distro to recover data * Hi all, what recommendations for a Linux distro to recover data from a very sick Compaq running XP. Looking at attaching a external HD and copying the Data from the Laptops C Drive to the External HD, a Linux distro that is user friendly in respect of "unable to mount" or perhaps a decent easy to use site that can guide me through it.

The Laptop boots to safe mode And will proceed no further under any safemode option goes into a perpetual loop, "XP" startup screen then a flash of a blue screen that would I am guessing be telling me an error message if it flashed for more an a tenth of a second then back to safemode screen

Heres some info I aquired Use ddrescue to copy your drive to an image file (or to another hard drive). You'll need another hard drive with as much space as your existing one if you want to try and recover all of your partitions. You'd do something like this to clone the entire drive (assuming the existing drive is sda and the new drive is sdb). Just boot from a live cd to use it (it's on the Mepis 7 and 8 CDs) and probably numerous others.

,,,, Start in Root mode Then use this code ddrescue /dev/sda /dev/sdb drivecopy.log That will tell ddrescue to make a sector by sector copy of the the source drive (/dev/sda in that example), writing to the destination drive (/dev/sdb in that example). The third paramater is a log file that keeps track of what's been copied OK so far. That way, you can let the drive cool off and run it again (over and over as desired) and it will only attempt to copy what has not been copied error free so far. Just note that if you're running it from a Live CD, you won't be able to turn off the PC and still keep the logfile (unless you point the utility to a separate drive somewhere for it).Fascinating aye.

Its a while since i have done this but I recall that you do it the same way as in windows. You can drag and drop too I think. Just check that the whole file has been transferred and not just the file 'icon'.

Just being frivilous ct I ain't tried it so I'm in the dark as well. Well not really but it's difficult to explain. Someones probably got an easier way like using the Partedmagic livecd and clonezilla on it to do the same thing. http://partedmagic.com/download.html

I'll give you my half hearted attempt at doing it using the puppy cd..Boot it up then open the Konsole..Thats has a Black TV like icon. Now get into superuser or root mode and once you have got hold of the name of the drive you want to copy the stuff from and the drive you want to copy the stuff to just use the dd code I posted above by changing it to whatever your drives are..Enter it into the Konsole and then push enter...Leave the .logfole bit off the end if you like..Then just sit back and wait for it to finish. Their thats pretty straighforward.

the wizards are pretty straight forward. terminal is called rxvt in puppy not "konsole" and there is no super user, you are root @ boot

Right...well it should be easy The partedmagic livecd has clonzilla on it so you possibly will have a GUI to deal with if you don't like the Konsole or whatever else it's called..It also mounts drives the same as Puppy does and has test utilitys with it for testing the integrity of the drives. Get the latest one to download as it has clonezilla and no doubt ddrescue as well if you need to do it manually. It's in your safe hands.

Having looked at Partedmagic You'd mount the drives and then use clone on them,,Midnightcommanders there as well for browsing the files as is dd. You start midnight by opening a Konsole or on Parteds case a TV like icon with the $ sign in it which is in the taskbar..Type mc push enter and run down to the media dir to browse the files using the arrows so theirs your file browser. Once you've mounted the drive by using the Mount devices icon you would I suppose just follow Clonezillas gui which is just a frontend for ddrescue I beieve..Anyway it's all their for a bit of mucking about with...Course you could maybe just use Hirems cd as well and Nortons cloner. I'll leave you with it.
