#4 | | Ask Tm to put their business model up for auction Thats about the only way you would get an inkling of an idea. |

#5 | | You could start up a fairly decent one for around 30 to 40 grand but if it did get busy youd need to start investing heavily into it. Staffing costs would be a big one as you would have to pay top dollar to programmers if they became necessary full time. |

#6 | | "like TM" Get a server in the amazon cloud, stick MySQLAuction on it, customise it a bit. If you know a bit of PHP and do all the work yourself you could have a pretty decent site for peanuts. Also nice thing about AWS is that if you end up as big as TM or even EBAY you can very easily throw a whole bunch of virtual servers online as you need them, take them down again whenever the load drops, and only pay for what you use. |

#7 | | I thought you meant like TM now not like when they started. A startup would not need the server power and infrastructure they have now. |

#14 | | Re: 13 Typically you wouldnt pay by the hour for something like this. You would research prices of similar projects and offer a fixed price for the whole job. That way your not paying for some slacker to play halo while your paying him or her 200 bucks an hour. |

#17 | | I don't know why anyone would strive to be second to go into that sort of business. I would think that any online auction site, starting in opposition to TradeMe, is doomed to failure. An original idea would be better, or a business where you're physically dealing with a product. |

#18 | | I agree with . Even ebay, the biggest auction site in the world has given up challenging trademe. Unless you create something totally revolutionary which trademe is unable to copy then you will never be the no. 1 auction site in NZ (unless TM does something really stupid). |

#20 | | From today's stuff.co.nz Eccentric billionaire, quater, has been spotted on the TM message boards again. Apparently discussing plans to start competitions to New Zealand's most dominant online auction site, Trade Me. Attempts to contact the reclusive finance wizard, who has previously been spotted asking how to copy xbox games and where to score free copies of M$ Windows, have once again been unsuccessful. |

#25 | | You wouldn't be the first one to set up in competition to TradeMe. But to get people to list on another auction site is a mamoth task. What's needed is a search engine that searches all NZ auction sites. That way any auctions on your site would recieve as many views as TradeMe auctions. This search tool would have to be available as a browser plugin - that'd be better than people having to go to a search site all the time as they might forget and revert to just visiting TradeMe. |

#28 | | Just make sure you have legal advice re running an auction site, and competent programmers who are up with the play regards security issues. |

#29 | | Good luck with that Apart from the initial build you would have ongoing modification and development for bugs and new features. |
