Latest update on P2P laws ? In NZ they were talking about the 3 strikes law, which was to be carried out by the ISP, but last I heard this law was delayed. Any updates?
geek_karl.nicJuly 1, 2009, 5:24 pm#2
Im with xnet and it has always been 1 warning, next time you are disconnected.
geek_gyrogearlooseJuly 1, 2009, 5:25 pm#3
This was the latest update I've seen http://computerworld.co.nz/news.nsf/news/E84DEF23FE56F432CC2575DF00733FBB?Opendocument&HighLigh<br />t=2,copyright
geek_moneJuly 1, 2009, 5:27 pm#4
I got stung by that. That's an Xnet policy though. Lost them a lot of customers I heard.
geek_kiwicarolJuly 1, 2009, 5:28 pm#5
Poster 2 not true necessarily. While xnet and I assume, most other providers have their own terms and conditons regarding this, they dont cut you off after 2 warnings, especially since that law was delayed. They are not going to deny themslves revenue unless i guess someone continually and blatantly abuses their t&c.
geek_moneJuly 1, 2009, 5:31 pm#6
Actually it was after a warning, so it was my 2nd warning from Xnet.
geek_kiwicarolJuly 1, 2009, 5:38 pm#7
Mone that surprises me.Did you ring them as asked to in the emails they send?My teen dauahter moved back home awhile back and since then I have had 2 warnings for things she has downloaded. The second clearly stated due to the law being delayed they would take no action. The first the guy I spoke to couldnt have been more helpful and wasn't fazed about it at all.Mind you if there was to be another I am not sure what the outcome may be other than me throttling said teen when it is my account. lol
geek_0800xfordJuly 1, 2009, 5:39 pm#8
we should be allowed to steal as much as we want when where and how ever we want, really.
geek_0800xfordJuly 1, 2009, 5:39 pm#9
oh, and quickly
geek_noswalgJuly 1, 2009, 5:53 pm#10
Yeah yeah really quickly i've never had a warning from xnet, and i'm an avid fan of torrents. i would'nt care if they disconnected me i'm on the verge of finding another ISP anyway mayby i should push it to see how far i can go!
geek_0800xfordJuly 1, 2009, 7:18 pm#11
faster and more reliable theft is what we want, there must be a more economical way to steal.
geek_noswalgJuly 2, 2009, 9:45 am#12
Yep it was'nt that long ago that theft used to be free. whats this world coming to?
geek_nzoomedJuly 2, 2009, 10:06 am#13
What percentage of broadband customers download "pirated" material anyway? lol! Most people use broadband so they can download their movies, music etc quickly? isint that the point? lol
geek_biker_69July 2, 2009, 10:08 am#14
FYI http://tinyurl.com/lmnggc
geek_cybertaoJuly 2, 2009, 10:12 am#15
Yeah, true that none use it for things like reading and posting on message boards. browsing online auctions when they are looking for something. downloading operating system updates. downloading operating systems. sharing free music. ordering pizza. reissuing your library books online. filling in a student loan application online...it's all about the piracy. the only thing the internet is good for.
geek_nzoomedJuly 2, 2009, 10:12 am#16
Lol exactly what i think, its NOT the same, but the authorities like to make it look like that, anyone who hires a DVD will see that annoying message at the start of each DVD saying movie piracy is stealing! lol
geek_cyril.cJuly 2, 2009, 10:13 am#17
Xnet I'm with Xnet there are things they could do better. Someone I know got booted off Xnet no warning that I know of went to go on net no connection so rang up and they said had been cut off for breaching copyright. Wouldn't reconnect them.

This is even better http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mCt06X2ushM&feature=related
geek_cybertaoJuly 2, 2009, 10:20 am#20
Lol these silly piracy threads won't be nearly as amusing once people start getting kicked by their isp.
geek_nzoomedJuly 2, 2009, 10:24 am#21
Thats the whole point they will switch to another ISP that lets them download unlimited "pirated" downloads! lol

geek_cybertaoJuly 2, 2009, 10:29 am#23
Until they get kicked again! because the only way to sign up will be under a fixed term contract! and you will be liable for the early disconnection charge! isps will make money buy kicking such people between them!
geek_noswalgJuly 2, 2009, 10:45 am#24
I don't think they could charge you a disconnection fee if it was them that disconnected you, mind you who's gonna challenge it if they've got evidence of pirating, we're screwed i think but so are they downloadings a big part of their business
geek_cybertaoJuly 2, 2009, 11:03 am#25
My ISP(Xnet) state in their terms and conditions: "If you are suspended or disconnected from our Network for failing to meet any of your
responsibilities under this contract you may be required to pay a recommencement fee before
you can use our Network again. All costs and expenses of or incurred by us as a result of suspension
or disconnection and any recommencement shall be payable by you upon demand." Go read the T&C for your ISP for us all, instead of just thinking. It's good information for people to be aware of.
geek_noswalgJuly 2, 2009, 12:00 pm#26
I'm with xnet to and there were no disconnection fees when i joined and no communication with me as a customer when they changed the rules so i'll be paying nothing. I hope ;)
geek_cybertaoJuly 2, 2009, 1:28 pm#27
Xnet T&C "Adhere to the Xnet Acceptable Use Policy as set out at http://www.xnet.co.nz/content/terms.shtml
as amended from time to time." First thing on the acceptable use policy is "Undertake any unlawful purpose. This includes, but is not limited to; posting, storing, transmitting or
disseminating information, data or material which is libelous, obscene, unlawful, threatening, defamatory,
or which infringes the intellectual property rights of any person or entity, or which in any way constitutes or
encourages conduct that would constitute a criminal offence." You break the contract, you pay.
geek_noswalgJuly 2, 2009, 1:47 pm#28
Not disputing that, those are the rules and always have been but when the contract was agreed to between xnet and myself there were no fees, surely they cannot change this contract without first consulting me as i am a party to that contract. customers that joined after the 1st of november 08 are liable for the fee if they get disconnected but i won't be paying anything!
geek_cybertaoJuly 2, 2009, 1:48 pm#29
No, perhaps not. You will be paying one with your next ISP though.
