Xp ftw! ....
geek_0800xfordJuly 1, 2009, 10:29 pm#3
by the time you get used to vista, win7 will be on the shelves. it's already been out for testing for months.
geek_dino7July 1, 2009, 10:32 pm#4
If you are used to vista windows 7 is pretty much the same .......anyway i have a new system - got rid of windows 7, chose to install XP instead of Vista i reckon XP is still pretty good:)
geek_0800xfordJuly 1, 2009, 10:34 pm#5
will you be playing any uber modern games? directx may sway some voters.
geek_boots0016July 1, 2009, 10:54 pm#6
Xp is tried and proven Vista has caused so many problems its not funny. Windows 7 has yet to be proven in the real world. Take your pick.
geek_chessmanJuly 1, 2009, 11:19 pm#7
Linux ubuntu and best of all its free!
geek_morrisman1July 2, 2009, 12:08 am#8
I wouldnt even consider Vista unless I couldnt get xp drivers. Xp offers virtually the same features as vista but without all the bloat and bullshit slowing it down, getting in your way. Vista is supposedly more secure but unless you are a multi-billion dollar business nobody will bother hacking you, just careful browsing and secure passwords will keep you safe enough. Of course, more ideal for me is Mac OS X.
geek_crtnzJuly 2, 2009, 12:12 am#9
NietherOS X, even OS 9 is still awesome!
geek_morrisman1July 2, 2009, 12:19 am#10
The only time i have used OS 9 was on a powerbook, it was about 2" thick, had a floppy drive and a Ni-MH battery, TFT screen. It was a real brick but state of the art in its day. I think the HDD was like 640MB
geek_morrisman1July 2, 2009, 12:20 am#11
It may not have been OS 9 but it was definitely one of the classic style ones.
geek_sparpsJuly 2, 2009, 3:52 am#12
At present xp is fine but the problem is if you are a gamer then vista is your best choice at present due to xp will soon not be supported. windows 7 has less features than vista but will become more popular due to its ease of use and less features than vista but I have the advantage of having xp vista ubuntu and have tried windows 7.
what is not said about any of the linux systems at the moment is a trend (because its becoming more popular) that has shown an increase in virusus targeting linux and its various operating systems.
the other big dis-advantage to linux is its lack of games.
geek_sparpsJuly 2, 2009, 3:55 am#13
I would advise if you are a gamer then buy vista as you can turn off over half of the programs in vista which makes it run and start up very quickly.
or look up pc advisor which has a program that will do that for you and like linux is free.
geek_sparpsJuly 2, 2009, 4:16 am#14
As i have said at the beginning when vista was released it will be a flop it will fail.
but it fails because its too big for you as the user and has too many options as it has a huge selection of standard programs in place that most normal users would get confused by.
windows 7 fixes that by giving the user less choice which does not mean its better but for most its easier not to make a mistake.
geek_sparpsJuly 2, 2009, 4:29 am#15
Xpas i mentioned is very stable and has had good support over the years but in the next two will in popularity decline due to windows7 being the next generation system and so would not advise buying now due to short lifespan of only two years.
as for the mac systems would not advise buying a mac until mac itself starts admiting they have a vunerability problem in thier system as mac for years have used the sales pitch (you wont have a problem with virusses so you dont need antivirus) is no longer true.
geek_sparpsJuly 2, 2009, 4:44 am#16
So in conclusion if you are not into gaming then pick xp at present.
if into gaming pick vista.
and if you can wait to buy pick windows 7.

Xpvista is buggy as hell
geek_drcspyJuly 2, 2009, 6:10 am#18
Yeh ?..........well I disagree.......i've had this lappy most of a year now got vista home premium on it and it's NOT 'buggy as hell' in any way at all. In fact its perfectly usable in every way. Never had any issue with it a all !..
geek_drcspyJuly 2, 2009, 6:12 am#19
Its initial release wasn't good at all but the service packs have improved it vastly and theres a very good driver database available now. I think a lot of the problems are the usual PEBKAC.
geek_nzrysJuly 2, 2009, 10:25 am#20
I use both vista and xp and find both work exactly the same for me. I use the on the same laptops. Also what you havent been told is about the different versions of vista such as: Basic, Home Premium etc. I us the home premium version and its just great. Never had any issues with speed preformance, reliability etc. I notice that nearly every time a new os system comes out, people tend to knock them because probably they dont understand them? Good luck I'm sure you will be happy with your choice.
geek_stkysJuly 2, 2009, 10:47 am#21
If you go for Vista get this and rip the bloat out. http://www.vlite.net/download.html
geek_daffeyJuly 2, 2009, 10:50 am#22
XPXp the best - too much trouble with vista. I am going to load XP home into my new laptop this week.
geek_drcspyJuly 2, 2009, 11:18 am#23
WHAT 'trouble' ............??? .
geek_giblerJuly 2, 2009, 11:25 am#24
What theOS 9 was never awesome.. it was the worst.
geek_grievJuly 2, 2009, 2:09 pm#25
Sigh XP! my dell comp came with vista business on it, it was replaced with XP pro after a few frustating months, (thumbs up to Dell tho, they did that all for free and very quick) comp was out of service for 4hrs in total!
geek_0800xfordJuly 2, 2009, 2:23 pm#26
get linux
geek_maxwellblackJuly 2, 2009, 2:31 pm#27
Nothing wrong with Vista. If its running slowly it will be because you dont have decent specs - 1gb RAM really is the minimum, 2gb would be far better.
geek_morrisman1July 2, 2009, 2:58 pm#28
At this stage in technology, why should anyone have to buy 2gb of ram just to run the OS smoothly?
geek_whakatanerocksJuly 2, 2009, 2:59 pm#29
debian!
geek_0800xfordJuly 2, 2009, 3:06 pm#30
i'd never pay extra for the OS, debian here [and ubuntu] work well with 1GB of ram, P4 @ 3Ghz & onboard video. i have 2GB of ram though =p
geek_whakatanerocksJuly 2, 2009, 3:26 pm#31
2.66ghz Quad, 4gb ram, 9600gs video, debian/xp/win7 all running, all go well. Debian is fastest by far though. If you already have XP I'd stick with that till win7 comes out.
