Samsung W531 at Dicksmith why so cheap? $79.00 The obvious reason is getting rid of the old stock because of the XT mobiles but still it has Video, Mp3 etc. Is it easy to break? I'm planning in buying one tomorow. Does it need a sim card?

Imanaged to break the back cover [motorcycling....] but no its pretty robust overall. No sim required, uses the existing cdma network.

The Telecom Samsung W351...Is a great phone if you want to have Telecom & Vodafone on the same phone. Once you get it unlocked, you can put a Vodo sim card in it & use on the Vodo system. Only a matter of pressing 2 keys to change from CDMA to GSM when needed. I have been doing this since the W351 came out & never had a problem with it. Much cheaper switching over if you have to ring someone on Vodafone. I also use it on the Australia Vodafone system when I travel there instead of using the Worldmode (or global roaming).

Is the current unlock code widely available? thinking of getting one to replace my tired cdma phone - will be able to use on 2 degrees when they launch too since its only a gsm handset with no 3g..

No link, just do this menu, #, 1, 0, 1, 5, 9, 7, 5, 3 then go down to the * one which should say sim unlock and just change that then put ur sim card in, go to network select and choose card new zealand or (no. 2)

if that ddnt work, replace the 1 5 9 7 5 3 with 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 0

It does Telecom best you can't send or receive pxt/mms if you use it with Vodafone, and it could be fun keeping track of calls and things if you swap and change networks all the time

I went and asked at both Telecom and Vodafone outlets over the weekend if this phone would work on boith networks. Both shop assistants said it would not because the phones were locked onto the wrong Vodafone frequency....850 not 99 or other way round. But neither were keen to part with the information. Think I might wait to see what 2 Degree has come up with.

They would say that, wouldn't they? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samsung_SCH-W531 "Networks: CDMA 800 MHz, GSM 900/1800 MHz" Telecom's CDMA is 800MHz, Vodafone's GSM is 900MHz. XT is 850MHz and so a no go.

They can be used on both networks, as I have one that I have unlocked. Also, they are one of the few earlier phones that are worldmode phones for telecom so can be used overseas.

The W531 can be unlocked and will work On both Telecom CDMA and Vodafone GSM. There are two versions of the W531 software, so there are two unlock codes since the later batch of W531's had the code changed once it was made public. While in GSM mode (Voda) only voice and SMS functions work on the phone since it's primarily a CDMA device. NO data/MMS (pxt) are avaliable.

you are right that it cant be used on XT, but no-one here said it can be. what u can do is have the cdma installed number as telecom, and the sim unlocked as a 2degrees or voda, saves having 2 phs. yeah its a basic ph, but its like getting 2 basic phs for 80bucks all upbrand newbaragin in my books
