How easy or hard? Did you network or use a hard drive? from one old computer to another newer computer.

Do you mean migrate files across from windows to ubuntu? Or uninstall windows and install ubuntu? Or install ubuntu on the same computer as windows?
geek_em007 October 15, 2009, 7:57 pm
#3
migrate files so one computer is windows and the new one is linux. . .
geek_0800xford October 15, 2009, 7:58 pm
#4
do you mean dual booting or two entirely different computers?
geek_em007 October 15, 2009, 7:59 pm

I have installed ubuntu on that same computer as windows. Wasn't very hard at all. I was thinking oh no I have to relearn all the computer language but no just popped cd in drive and away I went. I can't use my printer when I us ubuntu as there are no drivers for it yet. The printer is a Lexmark X2330 but I can live with that.

Well I have the computer with windows and my ex has the computer with linux. I think the easiest way is to put his stuff on hard drive then he can what he likes with it but he thinks he should network it or something. . .

and for some reason he thinks he cant convert data etc. . from a hard drive and I dont understand why. My computer is old and only has a 1. 0 USB port would that make a difference?
geek_dunedin_ree October 15, 2009, 8:05 pm

Burn his stuff onto a DVD and tell him to do whatever he likes with it.

By the way it's just data. You're not wanting to convert it - you need to transfer it from point A to point B. The question of whether or not the applications exist on Linux to *open* the files is another question. . .

He tried burning some stuff to dvd last weekend and said it didnt work and wants to take my computer away for a few days. . . . Its basically emails, contacts, data, music and photos.

Your ex? No, he's either a moron or is trying to screw you over.

What files exactly is he wanting off your computer?

Emails: in what application? Outlook express? Photos and music (I assume mp3s) are fine - no conversion needed, they will work.

Just install the ssh package on the ubuntu machine (search for it in synaptic or open a terminal and type 'sudo apt-get install ssh), then install 'winscp' on the windows machine, copying files over is very easy and fast.

Or make a 'shared' folder somewhere, right-click and choose to share it (almost identical to how you do it in windows) ubuntu will go install all the samba stuff and you'll be able to see your shared folder from the windows machine. Not as good as scp though, smb is a very 'noisy' and inefficient protocol.

I need to pop out but will check back in later. Some of my friends and family are saying he wants to copy my personal data hence taking away the computer and its rubbish he cant use the info from a hard drive.

Beware the "ex" wanting to "borrow" your computer. Don't know either of you from a bar of soap. Get some help from soneone you trust to copy his files from your machine to a CD and give that to him. There is likely to be stuff on your PC that is private and he may just be looking for ways to cause you grief. Men can be like that. I know, I am one. Good luck.

emails in outlook. Music is a mixture of all sorts. Data will be excell, word, pdf, microsoft project etc. . .

Email will need to be converted from Outlook to whatever format he is using. Google for help, since I don't know what email application he is using on Linux.

Office should be fine.

Project - I have no idea. Google for that too. I would suggest giving him his data, exporting emails and contacts and telling him to sort it out himself. No need to borrow your laptop.

I have imported Outlook data straight into Ubuntu Evolution (default) email just by following the click, click click, no problem. Should be easy from an Outlook backup file or export fileas well.

Never give anything to a ex you may never see it again or if you do it will have been mucked around with. If he wants e-mails then e-mail them to him and any documents he has e-mail them to him as well. Songs and photo's can be put on disk. Never give the ex anything.

Then put it away, because if you're that fearful it'll be a self-fulfilling prophecy.

WTF?

How about you turn your spell check on and re-read my original post, which was completely lacking in exclamation marks, angry faces or anything else indicating un-calmness. If you're fearful it means you don't understand how to use a Live CD. Do some homework and overcome your fears.

Again, note calmness.

geek_dunedin_ree October 15, 2009, 8:45 pm

Click "quote". in this case the quoted post contained a quote already, but you can write whatever you like as long as it's in the right format.

Your username sucks. When did I swear?
your FEEDBACK is terrible LEARN to USE trademe
ha thats all you can say? You people are so stupid . You look at feedback like its the gospel. Just like how i could buy a item off someone and be difficult with a trade and give bad feedback. My bad feedback is from recieving a goodfeedback and giving a bad and then they change theirs to bad. Dont believe everything you read - dumb ass

If he had his own login on your computer just drag all of C:\Documents and Settings\his name\ into a black CD folder (if it'll fit) or something that can burn a DVD and burn it and give him the disk. If he can't figure out how to convert it from that, having your computer isn't going to help him at all.

If he didn't have his own login you'll have to pick through all your shared files and figure out what was his, but otherwise same deal. Or you could just tell him he should have been keeping his own backups and can go fsck himself.

one is deserved from me canceling on a trade. Most are from same trader, I traded with kk and he spitefully changed his to bad.

Thanks for your advice. Yes he has a separate user so that part is easy. The photo's and music are shared folders. So hard drive or lots of disks will work. Thanks

He is your EX . . tell him to go get his own computer and stop snooping around with yours. For all you know he could fill it up with dodgy stuff and get you in trouble for it. He could install a keylogger or just grab all your passwords for everything. Doesnt matter if he has a different account, its easy to get admin on XP if you dont have admin

OK back to the issue of migrating files from XP machine. . . I installed a new drive and put Ubuntu on that. The original drive for windows I made the slave. This allowed dual boot and avoided damaging data on Windows drive. In Ubuntu go to add/remove programs and install NTFS configuration tool (search for NTFS). You can now read and write directly to any data on the XP drive and you have retained the original storage. For example you can open a word document on the windows drive with Open office and save it back onto that drive.
