Microsoft is urging people whose computers are running with pirated Windows software to install official Microsoft security patches ??“ and promises not to punish them.
Tens of millions of computer owners are thought to use pirated software, and security experts are concerned that so many computers running with unpatched security issues could help the spread of botnets and viruses... .

lol thats so full of crap.
to download updates they get an idea of how many are pirated, anyone with genuine should be immune to bugs, why would they advise pirates to update other than to know how many are dumb enough to do it? they dont care if the unprotected pirate users get pwned.
they could use it to their advantage and say most of the viruses people get are becasue they dont update or they use a pirated version. if genuine users update they are immune to virus? hahaha so pirates arent? so why would they care? see my point? |

| One thing I know is that in South American countries, all the Pirate versions I've seen have SP3 and also actually USE the M$ update site bypassing the WGA. So, really, there's probably no need. |

... and before that, re-implimenting someone else's programming language using fraudulently obtained mainframe time to run an emulator they had no permission to use.
But back on the original topic, timely release of patches for security flaws; http://is. gd/7PLdG http://is. gd/7PMwZ I think that first one is the worst because it was a -remotely exploitable- flaw which had been public knowledge for 7 years. The second one is interesting because MSFT are supposed to have been doing all kinds of security audits and major overhaul to make Windows more secure, yet the same legacy code carries through all the way from NT3. 1 to Windows7 untouched? ! ! |

| this is funny. They could instantly turn on the pirates and catch millions. |

| Maybe so - But there is the threat to the rest of us in that unprotected users are prime targets for those evil doers that are putting botnets together, and these are then able to be used to launch dos attacks on the sites that us law loving users like to use. Is that a point worth considering? |

| that is the point, which seems to have been missed. |

| better to be protected and pirated than not to be. |
| geek_little_egypt | February 7, 2010, 11:28 am | #16 |
| Better still to run a Free operating system designed with a more solid security model from the beginning. |
