how do I take a lap top back to factory settings? Please? Thank you :)
geek_drcspy February 7, 2010, 3:32 pm

depends somewhat on the make/model

you ARE aware that you'll LOSE any and all stuff which is currently on the machine (your saved files/settings/installed programs etc)

yup, dont mind about losing anything, there isnt much on there anyway (that we dont want to lose). It is a Acer extensa 5220 (I think, thats what the sticker on it says). It belongs to my parents and they are having issues with it. I am defragging it at the moment.

Did you make recovery disk when you go it? Like it will have asked you to do? If not, you will find a recovery disk maker in the programs menu most likely.

I think acer tend to use recovery partitions. Ctrl + Alt + F10 at power up...

From the manual ...
1 Press <Alt> + <F10> or select Acer eRecovery Management from the
Empowering Technology toolbar to start Acer eRecovery Management.
2 Switch to the restore and recovery page by selecting the Restore button.
3 Select the backup point you would like to restore from. You can also
choose to recover the system from a factory default image, recover from a
previously created CD/DVD or reinstall applications and drivers.
4 Follow the instructions on screen to complete the process.

Oh thank you! ! ! ! I will give that a try once its done with the defrag. Thanks so much :)

dont know if you REALLY understand what you're doing

a defrag is COMPLETELY a waste of time in the circumstances because the acer recovery will WIPE COMPLETELY anything that's currently on the system and reinstall it to its original state

defraggin it is a complete waste of time

rofl @ defrag before factory restore hahahah
geek_gibler February 7, 2010, 3:58 pm
#11
yes I thought it odd drcspy ... but you are only reinforcing the reputation computing has (in parenting)... heh.

errrr well I dont go in there I kicked my kids out long ago so I dont care about those issues anymore lol so I'm not worried... ...

probably trying to determine whether a defrag will fix whatever it is that's wrong with it before doing a complete factory restore.
geek_la_di_da February 7, 2010, 4:21 pm
#14
well I had started the defrag before asking so just let it finish what it was doing anyway.
But thanks so much for your arsehole way of helping. OR not helping as the case may be. Wanker.
geek_la_di_da February 7, 2010, 4:22 pm
#15
yes exactly, thank you!

you Freakin EGG. I've given you good advice including a FREEPHONE contact for Acer. Why dont you go take your rag pills bitch.

a complete system install may not be necessary. Go to start/all programmes/accessories/system tools/ system restore and run that at a date when the computer was going ok. That may fix the problem without doing a complete reinstall.

Computing has a reputation?
geek_lostdude February 7, 2010, 4:36 pm

LOL, still though, a defrag won't fix anything. Its only purpose is to organise your HDD's file structure, giving it a nominal speed boost is all.

yeah I knew that much lol. I think they should just invest in a new computer personally... . . but seems to be going a bit better for now.

thanks for your help!

my response to post #14 seems to have been innapropriate:

"We've received complaints that you have been violating the Message Board rules.

Please note that using offensive language, making inappropriate comments or abusing other members is not tolerated on the Message Boards. "

I'd suggest to poster "la_di_da" that maybe YOU shouldn't be tossing round unwanted uncalled for insults yourself and if you do and someone responds in kind then you better just wear it as youv'e probably deserved it.

Same here, last one of 6 left when she was 17 and the household expenses halved. They all know they can stay overnight any time, but they can never move back in and freeload lol. Don't know if that's bad parenting or not, but it works for us.

drcspy, complete waste of time trying to help la-di-da. Moody and bit#h at the best of times. Usually haunts 'opinion' and is frequently very opinionated whether she has knowledge of the the subject or not.

think you have the wrong person, have never been in opinion in my life.

and drcspy, I assure you that tm did not hear from me.

Its kind of funny though that this thread is still being bumped? ?

anyway, computer is all sorted and returned to my parents, hopefully it works a bit better for them now.

Thanks for your help people, you aren't as bad as they say lol
