Hi I have a Compaq Presario V6000 with Vista. I usedit the other night and when finished turned it off. Following night went to go on line (Telstrar Clear Broadband). It wouldn't connect, I turned the Modem off at the power and turned back on after 5 mins, still no luck. Tried the following night with the same results. I called Telstrar and they advised my modem was working. Laptop will connect onto Telecom Broadband at my friends house. I have borrowed my daughters laptop and can get online no problem with that. It appears that my laptop just won't connect. My friend checked my firewall and he said that is ok. I have run a virus check and that is ok too. Can anyone help? Please I am really blonde when it comes to computers so if you are able to help you will need to explain what I need to do step by step Thanks |

| Are you using an ethernet cable? Does it show as being connected to your modem/router at 10 or 100mbps in the 'system tray'? |
| geek_lostdude | February 7, 2010, 4:09 pm | #3 |
| If you have cable you'll have to retrieve the static I. P. address, subnet mask & default gateway from Telstra again. |

| I'm not sure. I have a black cable that goes from the modem to the wall and then a cable that goes from the modem to the wireless belkin router. I also called Belkin and they managed to confirm that the internet wasn't connected. |

| ok, so how did you daughter's laptop connect? Wirelessly or via cable? |
| geek_bluemoon07 | February 7, 2010, 4:14 pm | #6 |
| Yes we did that and then they had me go to'All Programs' Accessories, Command Prompt and had me type in Ping and no's and they said it was the laptop not them |

| I hovered the mouse over the two little computer screens in the system tray and it says speed: 100. 0Mbps |
| geek_r.g.nixon | February 7, 2010, 4:21 pm | #10 |
| Disconnect the network cable while the computer is running. Did any message pop up at the bottom right? Then plug it in again. Any message about connecting? |
| geek_bluemoon07 | February 7, 2010, 4:22 pm | #11 |
| I don't know about the ethernet cable |
| geek_r.g.nixon | February 7, 2010, 4:23 pm | #12 |
| Good, you don't need to pull the cable. You have a good physical connection. |
| geek_lostdude | February 7, 2010, 4:24 pm | #13 |
| On the bottom right corner of your monitor, it should show an icon of 2 computers like this: http://is. gd/7QWaY - hover your mouse over it then tell us what it says. |

I unplugged the cable from the laptop and got the above message |
| geek_bluemoon07 | February 7, 2010, 4:28 pm | #17 |
| When I plugged it in again it said I was connected |
| geek_r.g.nixon | February 7, 2010, 4:28 pm | #18 |
| What did they mean? Did they mean that the Belkin can't see the modem? |
| geek_drcspy | February 7, 2010, 4:29 pm | #19 |
| yep an dwhen you plug it in you get 100Mbs... ... . . which means the computer is communicating with the modem. |
| geek_r.g.nixon | February 7, 2010, 4:32 pm | #20 |
| So are you bypassing the Belkin Wireless, and plugging straight into a modem/router? |
| geek_lostdude | February 7, 2010, 4:33 pm | #21 |
I'm trying to get a clear picture of your setup. So does it look like this:
PC > Belkin Wireless router > Modem > phoneline or... |
| geek_bluemoon07 | February 7, 2010, 4:37 pm | #22 |
| I'm sorry I have been trying to answer but the laptop froze |
| geek_bluemoon07 | February 7, 2010, 4:40 pm | #23 |
At the moment on the NEC (daughters laptop) pc > Modem > Cable to the wall
When I'm using Presario (mine) pc > Belkin Router> Modem>Cable to the wall |
| geek_lostdude | February 7, 2010, 4:41 pm | #24 |
| ok, try the same setup you used on your daughter's laptop then report the results |
| geek_bluemoon07 | February 7, 2010, 4:42 pm | #25 |
| If you want me to try anything with mine I will need to unplug the modem cable from the NEC and plug back into the belkin router |
| geek_r.g.nixon | February 7, 2010, 4:43 pm | #26 |
| Check your TCP/IP settings on the Presario. Where it says 'gateway' should match the IP address of the Belkin. |

| geek_lostdude | February 7, 2010, 4:45 pm | #27 |
| Why do you have to do that? |
| geek_bluemoon07 | February 7, 2010, 4:48 pm | #28 |

Why do you have to do that?
Because the wireless router is not connected to the modem when I have the cord connected straight from the modem to the pc |
| geek_lostdude | February 7, 2010, 4:51 pm | #30 |
| OMG. disconnect your wireless connection. |
| geek_lostdude | February 7, 2010, 4:53 pm | #31 |
You don't need to have the wireless router connected.
What I'm trying to determine is whether it is a problem with your PC or the router... & from your last post, it seems IT IS indeed a problem with your router or the setup for your wireless router connection. |
| geek_bluemoon07 | February 7, 2010, 4:53 pm | #32 |
| Yes the only way I can get my daughters pc to connect to internet is to change the IP address to what mine says as hers is connected through telecom at her place |
| geek_lostdude | February 7, 2010, 4:54 pm | #33 |
| Now, does your daughter's laptop have wireless capability? |
| geek_bluemoon07 | February 7, 2010, 4:54 pm | #34 |
| Ok wireless is turned off at the power now |
| geek_lostdude | February 7, 2010, 4:55 pm | #35 |
| OK, try accessing the net on your PC |
| geek_bluemoon07 | February 7, 2010, 4:56 pm | #36 |
| Totally unplugged it and then plugged the modem cable direct into my pc and am now using it. |
| geek_bluemoon07 | February 7, 2010, 4:57 pm | #37 |
| So it has to be the Belkin wireless router that is doing something random |
| geek_lostdude | February 7, 2010, 4:58 pm | #38 |
| Not something random, just not configured correctly |
| geek_bluemoon07 | February 7, 2010, 4:58 pm | #39 |
| No daughters laptop has to have some sort of card that slides into it to make it wireless but she has lost it. |
| geek_lostdude | February 7, 2010, 4:59 pm | #40 |
| Can you post the exact make/model numbers of both your modem & wireless router? |
| geek_bluemoon07 | February 7, 2010, 5:00 pm | #41 |
So now I need to call Belkin and have them talk me through setting up the router again.
Thank you so much |

| Belkin wireless G Router Model No:F507230-4 |
| geek_bluemoon07 | February 7, 2010, 5:03 pm | #43 |
| Modem:Motorola Model No:SB101i |
| geek_lostdude | February 7, 2010, 5:03 pm | #44 |
| It seems as though the Belkin router is conflicting with the modem. If the Belkin has DHCP enabled then it definitely will be. You will need to set a static IP for the Belkin router on your modem & disable DHCP on the Belkin. |
| geek_lostdude | February 7, 2010, 5:05 pm | #45 |
| Ok, ring Belkin first & ask them to walk you through the process again. If it still fails then return here. It will be a lot faster on the phone than this MB. |
| geek_bluemoon07 | February 7, 2010, 5:05 pm | #46 |
| Sorry you have totally lost me |
| geek_bluemoon07 | February 7, 2010, 5:06 pm | #47 |
| OK thanks I really appreciate your help and time |
| geek_lostdude | February 7, 2010, 5:08 pm | #48 |
| lol np :) |
| geek_spyware | February 7, 2010, 5:11 pm | #49 |
| This is a DOCSIS cable modem and does not use NAT or have a functioning DHCP server. |
| geek_lostdude | February 7, 2010, 5:13 pm | #50 |
LOL, I guess I should have actually googled the modem in question.
So she will need a new modem for more than 1 connection to the internet. |
