Hi I have Ubuntu (. 04 installed on mmy Sony Vaio Laptop, which has a dodgy headphone jack. While I can fiddle round with the plug to external speakers often it only has to be bumped and the laptop loses the connection and reverts to laptop speakers. I purchased this USB soundcard (http://www.trademe.co.nz/Brow- se/Listing. aspx? id=269120823) and cant get it to run properly. Have googled the prob, tried installing and configuring alsa mixer, gxmms2 and pulse audio device chooser etc but I still cant make the usb the default and always seem to end up with only the laptop soundcard having any output... Im lost... . |

Your post mentions you have pulse installed. Check Synaptic to ensure you have ubuntu-restricted-extras installed. Check that your user and the root user (if you have created one) are members of the pulse, pulse-access and pulse-rt groups. Log out and log back in. You should now have a Video/PulseAudio Device Chooser icon in the tray. Play with this to set default audio. Failing that, swear a lot and wait for the next major Ubuntu release in April... . . |

System > Preferences > Sound
Switch to the hardware tab and you should be able to select the USB sound device there. |

| Thanks pulsario and little-egypt... have got a copy of 9. 10 but i had problems getting things like vlc mediaplayer and a few other faves working on it so reverted back to 9. 04. pretty sure i have ubuntu-restricted installed but will try all those options. I have the laptop connected to a 32" lcd with wireless internet, so aswell as surfing trademe, faceook etc, i have also been running music and videos thru it alot... hence wanting good stable sounds... especially after having to send the ps3 back to shop 4 repair... i need it for multimedia hub... . . Also sux if Oxford has been kicked off, lucky we still have some gurus left here... . |
