Seeing has how everybody is hoeing into Telecom today I'd thought I add my pet peeve at the moment.
Was at clients discussing their domain and charges this morning. Though they were paying $7 per month for domain name charge. Saw their bill today and see that's now $14 per month.
Hells bells! ! ! !
I charge $50 + GST per annum for basic domain name management.
I wonder if I am not charging enough! ! ! ! |

There is the initial registration. Then the annual renewal fee.
Managing the domain really means maintaining the DNS entries for the domain name. Usually set it and forget it.
I have a reseller hosting account which I pay a monthly fee for. I am hosting a number of domains and some of them have associated websites.
The charges for the website hosting cover my reseller hosting charge. |

| Only someone inexperienced with domains would be sucked into a monthly charge - for a change? ? ? That IS a rip-off :( |

| It's a lot, but compared to others it's not. I host and make a killing at $10 a month (mainly because the server is only about 2 meters away from me). |

I was talking to my mate today. He owns a big software company and was asking me why it costs 500 dollars to register an Australian domain. I told him it didnt. Turns out the company he was doing it with would act as a trustee and charged a fee for this service. Australian domains are hard to get without an ABN and this company had one. |

| There are some ridiculous prices quoted in this thread, domain registration is available for the grand total of $19. 95 pa these days, and yes that includes all the usual extensions. |

| and the service from them is faultless too, the sites I have hosted with them have absolutely NO downtime. The helpdesk is quick to respond, and helpful when needed. |

Telecoms website actually says they charge $45, which is a revised price after they contracted out to domainz, through telecoms small business centre. https://www.telecombusinesshub.co.nz/Internet/domain/Pages/B asics. aspx I suspect they maybe charging people the old price, by not updating their billing systems to reflect the new price?
Speedy, there maybe a few domain registrars charging $20 per month (plus GST by the way) for NZ domains, however, they would be either loss leaders to get people hosting with the, or selling at almost cost price. However that sort of price isn't sustainable, and you may have to pay for phone support, and email support maynot be good. They would need to sell huge volumes to make any money. You can get .com domains for $8 US, but you don't get much in the way of support. |

| It's not $20 a month, but a year. What support could you possibly need for a domain name? You only need to know the DNS servers to point to and that information is freely available on sites when you login. Oh and I pay about $26 a year for domain names and I do not host with the same company - and I do not charge my clients any more than actual cost for domain names. Telecom prices are highly inflated. |

Obviously I mean $20 a year, as reeplying to speedy YOu would be surprised what you need support for, eg problems with the domain, udai codes, setting up complex DNS setups. If you are not charging your clients more than cost, then you won't be in business for very long, as you need to make profits when you are in business. ALso there are legal implications with registering domains for your clients, for example what if you forget to renew their domain, and they lose it, so you need insurance to cover things, which is expensive. Also if your client doesn't pay, and they claim they never got any warning from you, and they then lose their domain. I have seen this happen. Telecoms new domain prices of 44. 94 per year which is an average sort of price. |

| Depnds what their cost price is and what their service is like. Domainz charges more, and so do many other registrars. |
