i'll appoligise in advance, have just been to an office clearence sale from a closing down business, picked up a reasonable priced computer and a d-link wireless router. Where do i go from here? the router is not linked on to the computer (we knew it wasn't), do I need a disk to upload the data required? just always had the plug in variety.

No disk required, use a web browser. Reading the router manual may help you - all manuals are on manufacturer websites. You'll need an Ethernet patch lead to configure it though before going wireless.
