Can't access random sites

Haven't been able to log into smile city for several days now.

This moring wikipedia won't let me in.

Google earth can't get access to the net.

Win7 Ulitimate all up to date.
Zone alarm up to date.
Antimalware up to date, says no malware.
Avast up to date, says no viruses.

I have tried accessing using Firefox, Opera, and Internet Explorer, all have the same problem so it has to be a bug in my system somewhere.

geek_kiwikidd77, Mar 4, 9:43 am

are theyblocked in hosts file...

geek_blenheim-trader, Mar 4, 9:45 am

Have you tried turning it off and on again? Reset the router.
If that doesn't help, try using OpenDNS or Google's DNS servers instead of your ISP's (that the modem uses by default).

geek_cybertao, Mar 4, 9:46 am

My bet is zone alarm is the culprit.

geek_pcfix4u, Mar 4, 9:48 am

Hmm I've turned off all my system as usual overnight, still the same.

geek_kiwikidd77, Mar 4, 9:52 am

Try turning of Zone alarm. .

geek_blenheim-trader, Mar 4, 9:53 am

why would it block just a few sites though?

What do you recommend instead?

geek_kiwikidd77, Mar 4, 9:55 am

Opps goofed. its not Zone Alarm its PCTOOLS firewall plus. Forgot I'd changed. I'll disable it to see what happens.

geek_kiwikidd77, Mar 4, 9:58 am

Because its turned to *%^& that's just my opinion i have the latest version on xp and it blocks outlook express sometimes the older version caused the system to take 3mins to boot. .

geek_blenheim-trader, Mar 4, 9:58 am

From memory when you disable zone alarm it is still active. You can stop services or Uninstall it.

geek_pcfix4u, Mar 4, 9:58 am

you don't have spybot search and destroy running?

geek_blenheim-trader, Mar 4, 9:59 am

The connection was reset

The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.

*The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few

*If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network

*If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

geek_kiwikidd77, Mar 4, 10:00 am

Spybot not installedhere.

Turned off the firewall no changes.

Got to be a bug in windows somewhere. I just found I can't change my desktop theme. I usually do it every day just for interest.

geek_kiwikidd77, Mar 4, 10:01 am

How you installed any recent updates from MS. . ?

geek_blenheim-trader, Mar 4, 10:03 am

OK system reboot has fixed the desktop theme which I can now change. Still can't access smile city or wiki

geek_kiwikidd77, Mar 4, 10:04 am

Sorry, I just don't have the stomach for Windows issues these days.

I hope you get it sorted, or try a live CD linux distro. ;-)

geek_cybertao, Mar 4, 10:09 am

My hosts files contents. .

geek_blenheim-trader, Mar 4, 10:09 am

Grr this is enough to make me give up for the day.

Still trying to sort myself with Linux. I think my copy of SuSE is faulty since KDE just freezes as soon as its loaded. neither keyboard nor mouse works. Gnome seems OK so far but Still trying to get online.
Someone kindly sent me a pic of how to set static IP in linux but it doesn't look like the settings I found in SuSE. So will try another distro today.

Maybe I should go bang my head on a wall to see if that helps.

geek_kiwikidd77, Mar 4, 10:16 am

Just tried to install spybot but can't do that either. did the download but it will not install. maybe time to renistall everything.

geek_kiwikidd77, Mar 4, 10:22 am

do you have malwarebytes?

geek_blenheim-trader, Mar 4, 10:23 am

malwarebytes antimalware installed and says all OK.

Just uninstalled PCTools firewall. no change to site access.

This is weird

geek_kiwikidd77, Mar 4, 11:01 am

you asked general first, i'm flattered asp
x? id=198505

geek_0800xford, Mar 4, 11:19 am

Did you have 2 x firewalls installed? ? you said you had zonealarm.

geek_pcfix4u, Mar 4, 11:24 am

Try going through a proxy such as

geek_r.g.nixon, Mar 4, 11:26 am

Only one firewall installed. I did have zonealarm but had changed to PCTOOLS firewall.

Now got NO firewall other than the one that comes with windiz

Going off now to retry linux and maybe reinstall Win7

geek_kiwikidd77, Mar 4, 11:40 am

any other common factors?
you didn't answer some important questions in some of your other threads asp
x? id=195660 asp
x? id=193866

geek_0800xford, Mar 4, 11:51 am

common = router

geek_0800xford, Mar 4, 11:53 am

KiwiKidd has a tendency not to answer the questions asked.

geek_badcam, Mar 4, 12:03 pm

so it's not just me then?

geek_0800xford, Mar 4, 12:05 pm

OK linux mint running from live CD has allowed me online. Got the IP sorted. This is a lot different to other versions of Linux but hey it works.

Still can't get into smilecity though.

geek_kiwikidd77, Mar 4, 1:06 pm

so this is spread across FIVE threads now? !

geek_0800xford, Mar 4, 1:07 pm

I try to keep each issue separate. the one in general was merely a comment not meant to ask for information.

The Online with Linux thread was just to say I've succeeded there. No need for comment either.

I've stuck with this thread about no access to smilecity and wiki as far as possible.

Also if you're upset I apologise will put everything in one thread from now on, although in the past they tend to get no answers if I have one thread covering more than one issue.

GO vote all the other threads off if you like. I'll stick with this one.

geek_kiwikidd77, Mar 4, 1:22 pm

Well, Mint is certainly a lot FASTER online than windows, but I still can't access smilecity. Can get in from another computer at a friends house.

geek_kiwikidd77, Mar 4, 3:51 pm

dont have it running at the mo cause I've changed A/v programs as I tend to do regularly but from memory Avast has 7 'providers' one of which is some kinda web monitor. Right clik the avast in the system tray and then go up till you find the menu you can disable all or any of the 'providers' as you wish... ... ...

geek_drcspy, Mar 4, 4:46 pm

Telstra have been having dns issues lately. Try ringing them & asking what their status is

geek_lostdude, Mar 4, 4:58 pm

So has Farmside.
So has ... ?

geek_r.g.nixon, Mar 4, 5:23 pm

Thanks people must have been a telstra issue as I can now get in using either windows or linux Mint.

Now on a learning curve with mint, investigating more to add to it.

geek_kiwikidd77, Mar 4, 5:42 pm

How ironic, post #3 would have fixed that.

geek_cybertao, Mar 4, 6:05 pm

post 5 said I turned it all off and restarted. Did that several times.

geek_kiwikidd77, Mar 4, 6:14 pm

go to cmd and typeping trytracert

geek_michael888, Mar 4, 6:19 pm

lol what's the point in that?

geek_lostdude, Mar 4, 6:21 pm

Oh, so that's why the others were being confused and frustrated by you. Like me, they thought you were reading more detail from each post than just what's in the first line.

geek_cybertao, Mar 5, 8:19 am

but only in -this- thread...

geek_0800xford, Mar 5, 8:22 am
