#1 | My dad's computer stopped working and I isolated the problem to the hard drive failing. I've built him a new computer but I don't know if there is a way to retrieve the data of his old drive.
The problem is when I plug the old drive as a slave the computer will not boot up. BIOS detects the drive but the computer automatically reboots just as windows (xp) starts to load. I can't proceed past this point.
Any ideas? | |

#3 | Check the jumpers. My recommendation is to use a 80-wire cable, jumper BOTH drives on cable select, put the one you want to be slave in the middle of the cable.
If that doesn't work, try putting the 'old' drive by itself on the second IDE interface (if you have one)
You could also try an external USB drive enclosure as flewy suggests. |

#4 | | Just retrieve the data from the backups - if it was important, there will always be backups made. |

#6 | You dont need an external inclosure to use your Hard drive. Just buy a usb cable & plug it into your IDE drive. You have to power up your drive but you should have a spare lead on your existing power supply. Set your drive to a slave & you should be away. USB leads are about $8. 00 I even havea spare. Just a few thoughts. |

#9 | probably wasting your money doint that but try anyway... ... ...
it looks like the drive hasa physical fault ... ... so... . . the only way to get the data off would be to take it to a data recovery specialist firm... . .cost you close to $1000 |

#10 | | You sure it's not trying to boot from the old drive? Most drives/boards support hot plug in's if its a SATA drive... . |
