A little help needed getting a strong wifi signal

I am living in a sleep out and we have just set up wireless internet, however the modem and router are in the house which means that there is alot of walls and possible interferences between my computer in the sleepout and the router, which is resulting in an often weak signal. What action can be taken to ensure I get a stronger signal more consistently. Are there products that can assist with this? Cheers in advance

insulation in the sleep could matter alot.

i have found it easier in personal experience to flag the sleepout with wifi and just run a 20-30M cable under thehouse and far away.

Thanks, would a range extender help at all?

10 metres, maybe a little more

Or get a w/l router and dongle capable of the 802. 11n standard. About double the range of g and much faster transfer speeds. It's backward compatible with 802. 11a/g too.

sleepoutout maybe lined with tinfoil or what ever its equivalent is in the insulation world.

i doubt very very much you would get any increasewith "N" .

why not?

1. 10m form the router now, hardly a signal now, 2. thru house to outside (posibly thru brick then to sleepout thru tinfoil insulation possibly x2 :)) 3. wireless N increases bandwdth more over than range.

True, 10m isnt far from the router already so there are other factors to consider, but N will at the least double the range from G.

A cable (as you suggested) will probably be easier, cheaper and faster if only such a short distance away already.

So what exactly do you think would be the best idea?

without really seeing or knowing the variables its is too hard to say either way, sending wireless to a sleepout is a different story from sending it to the bedroom from the lounge. And without saying anything that will cost you a hundy dollars or so , i cannot commit to either way apart from slightly leaning more to cable.

Flewys got the right idea, get a cable. You will get much better transfer speeds via cable with your adsl2 router (provided your on a adsl2 plan) this way too and you wont have to need to go inside to reset the router when wireless drops now and then as they tend to do.

Desktop? I had a similar experience and fixed it with a better 5 decibel aerial on my wireless card in my desktop. Think you can get them up to about 9 decibels (sp). My understanding is it can be on the modem or the card. Mine was just easier on the card. Be a pain running a cable out of one dwelling and into another.

So I can get a wireless card that would go into my desktop and that would give me a better strength signal from the wireless router inside?

If you current wireless card on your desktop has a removeable antenna (or the modem/router), you can get a more powerful antenna (5dBi, or 8dBi for example). This may (emphasis on may) solve the problem. And they aren't that expensive ($20 & $39 respectively)

Of all the antennas I've sold over the last 4 years, only twice has it not helped (and both of them had no signal to start with, and were hoping for miracles).

Otherwise you can move to outdoor, directional antennas, but that is getting costly and maybe a cable would be easier and cheaper.

With the right aerial, yes. Sorry for the delay in replying. My aerial had a magnetic base and just sat on top of computer box and connected to the card with a short cable. All up it cost me less than $50 at the time.
