#1 | | if a format utiity has a fat format available as 16 clusters does that mean it will format a hard drive as Fat16? I think it was "clusters". | |

#3 | You could have googled this faster than putting a message here!
FAT16 and FAT32 refer to the number of bits. Win95 introduced FAT32 so Win98 should be the same.
The default cluster size (a cluster of disk sectors) for a drive depends upon its size: http://technet. microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc940351. aspx |

#4 | Win95 /98 /98SE use's FAT32 (only)
it wasNT4 that used fat16 or Ntfs
The options for formatting as fat16 was mostly there for compatibility formatting of floppy disks etc with NT4 loaded on fat16.
It's a bit like other options in bios's such as a 2nd floppy "B" drive etc, left over "just in case you needed it" |

#6 | Pass, but never ever bothered to install win95 on fat16 (option never presented itself when formatting hdd's / or never noticed ? )
I do remember that NT4 had to be installed on fat16 OR Ntfs
Win2k was ONLY Ntfs |

#10 | You could be right tho... We started with an upgrade copy of win95a & that was automaticly fat32
later got a full version of win95a & that was also auto fat32
Maybe that was a 1st retail release version of win95 that you remember? (no letters after the "win" bit) |

#14 | | #1 was impatient and was worried because he could not start his old computer with a w98 cd. He thought if he formatted the hard drive using16 bit clusters things then maybe the w98 install cd would think the hard drive was formatted as a FAT16 hard drive and so permit the install. However he does not know much at all and discovered the hard drive which he forgot did not pass all formatting attempts he tried with it because it failed once ... I now forgot what I am rambling about and will not use that computer any more because I remembered I have a w98 computer somewhere else in the house anyway. |
