OK- know my way around XP, can fix most problems without trouble. Can create a bootable CD, know what iso is and how to burn to CD/dvd.

Have downloaded linux mint-8 iso from here(Downloaded version 8 from here (http://tinyurl.com/36fm3e) have burned to CD, but pc won't boot. (set to boot from cd).

Windows does this without doing anything else.

First issue, and I haven't even started! !

Help me out please. Prove to me it's easy-peasy - like windows. Rise to the challenge. (This might be good - LOL)

did you burn the iso file to disc or burn it as an IMAGE?
geek_charles.j March 16, 2010, 9:14 pm
#3
Burn it as an image with something like IMGBURN

Set your pc to have the cd-rom as first boot device and go from there

Once you're into MINT install it beside xp(you'll probably have to resize the partition)
geek_0800xford March 16, 2010, 9:17 pm
#4
the contents of the disc should look roughly like this
http://i40. tinypic.com/34otzy1. png
geek_duggin March 16, 2010, 9:19 pm
#5
Pointed the burning software to the iso file and clicked "BURN CD/DVD"
geek_charles.j March 16, 2010, 9:22 pm
#6
Ok well what happens during post?
geek_duggin March 16, 2010, 9:23 pm
#7
Yep, something like that, except there's only there's only 2 files in the root directory:README. diskdefines and md5sum. txt.

(Folders set to show hidden files and folders)
geek_charles.j March 16, 2010, 9:23 pm
#8
That's odd...

How big is the iso image?
geek_duggin March 16, 2010, 9:24 pm
#9
POST normal, then boots into windows
geek_0800xford March 16, 2010, 9:24 pm

678mb - no error messages appeared during burn - the "cd full" indicator was in the green - orange was 700mb.

#13
try a flash drive perhaps
http://unetbootin. sourceforge.net/
geek_duggin March 16, 2010, 9:27 pm
#14
Opened the iso with winiso to check, and that's all there is - as mentioned above. Downloaded the package again to make sure, but from a different site, same result.
geek_duggin March 16, 2010, 9:28 pm
#15
Yep, did that - pointed the boot loader to the iso file, then after rebooting got a screen with numbers counting from 10 to 1, then the screen refreshed and that process began over again. The linux files weren't copied to the flash drive.
geek_0800xford March 16, 2010, 9:29 pm
#16
can you name the iso file [i mean tell us the name of it]
geek_duggin March 16, 2010, 9:30 pm
#17
As downloaded from the url above, it's LinuxMint-8. iso
geek_badcam March 16, 2010, 9:30 pm
#18
As per Oxfords suggestion with unetbootin, which is great, or as per charles's suggestion ImgBurn.

Have you checked the downloaded distro against it's MD5 sum?
geek_0800xford March 16, 2010, 9:31 pm
#19
you've done the md5sum check?
geek_charles.j March 16, 2010, 9:32 pm
#20
Try fedora's live usb creator it's pretty good too

does mint make use of wubi?
i see an . exe in that /cdrom there... ?
geek_charles.j March 16, 2010, 9:38 pm
#23
Wubi allows you to install inside windows i believe
geek_0800xford March 16, 2010, 9:38 pm
#24
no man, you need to compare the . iso file to the md5. txt

If you've got bandwith to chew. . grab an ubuntu 9. 04 image and see if that works. atleast you can rule out the image or something?
geek_0800xford March 16, 2010, 9:41 pm
#28
what you did up there was get the hash sums for every file IN the iso
you just want the iso only

you'll get one number [ 06fc2f27f8352a2bac5516b86c0207-
55 ]
geek_charles.j March 16, 2010, 9:43 pm
#29
Yup or puppy

I said ubuntu because it's basically the same as mint lol

But yes, more logical to go smaller first
geek_duggin March 16, 2010, 9:45 pm
#30
Chose Mint, 'cause another thread mentioned it was a good distro. Might try Ubuntu again and see what happens this time. More issues - Linux and I just don't hit it off. LOL
geek_charles.j March 16, 2010, 9:47 pm
#31
lol! don't worry we've all been there

Just burn it with imgburn and see what happens. Or... try virtualbox. That'll tell you if the iso's suck lol
geek_duggin March 16, 2010, 9:47 pm
#32
Thanks guys, will be in touch if Ubuntu fails.
geek_0800xford March 16, 2010, 9:48 pm
#33
i prefer ubuntu to mint, but whatever works aye
you have to WILL IT to work man ha ha ha

el oh el?
geek_badcam March 16, 2010, 9:49 pm
#34
Try Puppy. Tiny, yet cool, Distro.

Also MD5sum check. Same principles apply with all Distros:

http://puppylinuxfaq.org/content/7/20/en/md5sum-iso-file-che
ck.html
geek_badcam March 16, 2010, 9:50 pm
#35
Puppy's only 100MB. In the meantime, check your MD5sum on Mint. What Browser do you use BTW?
geek_duggin March 16, 2010, 9:57 pm
#36
FF 3. 6
geek_0800xford March 16, 2010, 9:57 pm
#37
so it's quite possibly the way you are burning it then.
geek_badcam March 16, 2010, 10:01 pm
#38
ImgBurn
geek_cybertao March 16, 2010, 10:02 pm
#39
Are you burning to CD? Don't write at the maximum speed.
You can burn the image to a DVD if you like. The read rate on a DVD is higher while the spin speed is slower, so it works faster and more quietly than a CD. It also might work around the problem of CDs not booting due to read/write problems.
geek_charles.j March 16, 2010, 10:07 pm
#40
Yup ImgBurn is great

Otherwise if you want to have linux on hand virtualbox is great to play with until you're ready for a full install(although you won't get the funky visual effects lol! )
geek_0800xford March 16, 2010, 10:08 pm
#41
dual boot for the win
geek_duggin March 16, 2010, 10:09 pm
#42
Wouldn't have thought so - done it lots of times before - but I haven't ruled it out. :)
geek_charles.j March 16, 2010, 10:09 pm
#43
Yea Dual Boot is great

Ubuntu is brilliant on my laptop
geek_duggin March 16, 2010, 10:11 pm
#44
You're right, so I didn't. Think I chose 32, not sure now, but it wasn't full speed.
geek_duggin March 16, 2010, 10:12 pm
#45
Hope your icon wasn't a wolf whistle 0800. lol.
geek_0800xford March 16, 2010, 10:13 pm
#46
i bet badcam wanted this

edit: ouch, i missed the 50
geek_0800xford March 16, 2010, 10:15 pm
#47
dual boot = have multiple OS's installed at a time, i think i have 4 on this one?

hooooOOO000WWWllll!
geek_badcam March 16, 2010, 10:16 pm
#48
To use the Live CD/DVD yes. But, if you want to then install that Distro, it becomes a Dual Boot if it's installed next to another OS.
geek_duggin March 16, 2010, 10:16 pm
#49
dual boot=kicked in the bum with both feet at the same time.
geek_duggin March 16, 2010, 10:19 pm
#50
I have a spare hdd installed, so install the other os on that, then change the boot hdd in the bios. Leavs my existing setup inplace, and I can place hard without any worries.

Only done it with windows 7 rc1 but worked a treat.
