I'm fed up with Ubuntu. Lastest stupid decision was to remove GIMP from the default install so they can pack more social networking crap into it. Someone though putting the min/max/close buttons on the left side of the windows like OSX was a good idea (there's no good reason for this, it's just going to confuse and annoy people), plus they shortened the test cycle on Lucid and A3 is the buggiest Ubuntu alpha I've ever tested. I've switched to Debian and this time I might actually stay switched. Well done canonical!
geek_0800xford March 17, 2010, 7:51 pm
#7
they removed gimp?
remove open office, yeah fine, but not gimp.
or evolution mail

ubuntu one =x
geek_flewy March 17, 2010, 8:15 pm
#8
just compile ya own ;) ( might actually try that one day :)
geek_0800xford March 17, 2010, 8:18 pm
#9
ever tried arch? it's pretty sweet, kind of intense though especially for us noobs...
geek_little_egypt March 17, 2010, 8:24 pm
#10
Well no, don't remove OOo either. But GIMP is something I use a lot. Being able to boot the live CD and start editing MS Office documents, playing ppt's and touching up photos on someone's Windows box is damn handy. Photo editing is pretty close behind basic WP on the list of 'things regular people do' -- network storage and Twitter are way down the list.

#11
social networking stuff isn't something i use either
but open office is massive and i never use that either, or evolution, or ekiga, or empathy...

there's 200MB needlessly downloaded.
maybe a roll your own ubuntu is on the cards?

I'll be interested to see Mint's take on 10. 04. They've always made a better Ubuntu IME and may restore gimp.
geek_0800xford March 17, 2010, 8:38 pm
#16
i like how mint comes with thunderbird not evolution
geek_flewy March 17, 2010, 8:44 pm

it also comes with gimp ;)

Nice to see another convert welcome to Linux. At least you don't have to waste any money anymore so you will save yourself money on removing viruses, virus protectors etc. Yeah 0800 you got to love Arch its not for the faint hearted though but you know when you find arch or Gentoo easy then you are in the elite club.

something will go wrong. you won't know how to fix it and end up back in windows.

gentoo is hallowed uber ground, i see a mythbusters gentoo special "does gentoo actually work? " XD
at least arch is worth the time and effort, it's pretty fast and nice and light on it's feet and i really like how during the install it tells you which files you might like to edit.
geek_little_egypt March 18, 2010, 11:35 am
#28
You may well be right, but the user's lazyness and stupidity is hardly any fault in Linux.

There is a lot of help on the Ubuntu forums
geek_little_egypt March 18, 2010, 12:08 pm
#31
There's even more help on the ubuntu IRC channel! !

Be careful searching the forums too; check that the 'solution' you find is for a recent version of ubuntu, preferably the same version you're using. There are many ancient and convoluted howto's on the Ubuntu forums, and things that needed twenty lines of shell commands and building things from source in Hoary are likely to be nothing more than a checkbox somewhere in Karmic.

Indeed. I found the arch install surprisingly easy. Even getting wpa_supplicant for wireless setup was fairly easy with the available documentation. And it was nice not having all the extra crap installed. In saying that, I then went and installed gnome and ruined it all. I really need to check out a different DE

i put gnome on it too for some reason, i'd like to see [have] an arch/kde install

Yeah but not a lot of it is helpful or even useful. Ubuntu is trying to be everything to everybody. They stuff things up with every (premature) release as little_egypt described and they aqre trying to steer users towards using more and more proprietary software, the very antithesis of what Linux is about. Ubuntu is Debian done wrong.
geek_duggin March 18, 2010, 3:52 pm
#35
I know why I did, but with the help of kind folks in here who came down from the villages up in the mountains, I got mine up and running with all the eye candy.

Lovely.

Many thanks to rua69, 0800xford, cybertao, r. charles, a2znz, and others who helped me out late last night.

You guys are great!

That's how I feel. If I wanted someone else to control what's on my computer and what it does then I'd install Windows.
Ubuntu is a good introduction for people new to linux and trying it out without experienced assistance, but think most should move on once they have cut their teeth on it.

if Ubuntu is Debian done wrong
then Mint is Ubuntu done right
geek_little_egypt March 18, 2010, 4:26 pm

If you're complaining about Ubuntu promoting the use of non-free packages, drivers and codecs then Mint is Ubuntu done even worse!

Unfortunately the upgrade debacle puts many people (including myself) off it for life, and I used it from Hoary to Hardy.

Some are just not too bothered l_e and want "stuff" to work out of the box. Don't blame them.

That's what Windows is for.

Heaven forbid people might have to learn something!

it's a lucid thing, not a karmic thing...

my mistake and also Lucid is not at beta yet so things could change

I'm talking about the Ubuntu 10. 04 Alpha, the next Ubuntu release which will be out at the end of April. It no longer has GIMP on the CD and the default homepage and search has changed to Yahoo, which I think is a horrible decision no matter how well they got paid for it. Also it's buggy as hell at the moment and due to changes in the testing cycle I have a feeling it will still be fairly buggy in the final release.

There's lots of good stuff too though; the boot time goal was 10s on average hardware and they're pretty close already. Lucid boots FAST. Using the Nouveau driver instead of nv by default which is still only 2D but has better monitor detection, and with improved support for nvidia's non-free drivers you can install several at the same time and fairly easily switch between them. Also new version of likewise-open, have not tested this yet but in theory an ubuntu machine can be part of a windows domain, authenticate against AD, be admined from the server, sync folders and all that stuff.
