Linux - Omnia XP - Update

I downloaded both version 1. 1. and 2. 2-2 alpha (July 2009) and wondered if there would be any further versions.

Omnia is based on Debian 5. 0 Lenny and uses familiar XP icons to give the user the impression of being in a Windows environment.

A reply from the creator says:

"Hi, the project started primary for college degree, also received several downloads , i dont now about future of the project, , , because we dont Have help of the comunity, . . ,
Tks

Guilherme Straioto "

Do you know of any similar projects out there?

Anyone remember Lindows, which became Linspire?

I was so, erm, homesick using XP while I was waiting for my cap to clock over after I got my netbook, that I actually renamed My Documents for a pathetic semblance of familiarity. I'd have loved to have the gnome menu.

Strange, since he's aiming for familiarity, that the dev's chosen to use iceweasel over Firefox.

I suppose it might have a place as a sort of bridge distro. How are you finding it, sighkick?

Hi Rua69 - I have not really 'used' it and only run it for a few minutes as a 'Live' CD so can't really say too much about it.

My question was, was there anything similar that was being worked on as an on-going project? By similar, I mean good enough to fool the great unwashed that it wasn't actually XP ;)

I think Linux having a Xp look is a great idea especially for Linux phobes like me. .

At least that way it would be a gentle change...

Maybe more users would change if it looks familiar :)

I know. The name Firefox is more familiar than Iceweasel, no?

wtf? ? The distro in #1 is aimed at XP users, not Debian ones.

Oh I get you. You *can* install Firefox instead, thought it would be an obvious move for Omnia.

He may justhave wished to stick with the Debian principles though. His call as its his distro.

It's not hard to install an XP theme, shuffle the menubars around and install more windows-like software under any distro.

Some may just want the look and feel without having to muck around.

That's real learning. I'd say why bother as just about all distros are pretty easy to use anyway.

Indeed, with things like a 30 day trial period and product activation - although the latter was dispensed with since, erm, Service Pack 1.

True. For the authentic windows experience you MUST install Linux Genuine Advantage:
