On my Asus laptop, Mint just picked up the built in camera.

However, on my Desktop, it wouldn't pick up my Logitech Webcam. There's a y nice little work around for this though that hopefully will work for you. I'll get back to you about in shortly...

I didn't see the VG comments. Must have been placed after I read it. I'm curious now.

I'm not sure which website I found this on, but:

First you go into usr/bin as Root/Admin and rename skype to skype. real

You then have to create a Bash script and insert the followiing code:

#! /bin/bash
#export XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1
export LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l-
1compat. so
skype. real

You it as skype and you'll need to change the newly created files permissions with:

sudo chmod 755 /usr/bin/skype

Bearmy Desktop is a 32bit. There's something else you need to do for 64bit PC's This thread and in particular the comments should help you resolve this:

http://blogs. skype.com/linux/2009/09/some_explanations.html

Let me know how it goes.

When first did this, the picture would sometimes get darker. Removing physically the camera from the USB port and restarting Skype would solve that. But, I presume because of a Mint (not Skype) update, that's stopped. The image looks good every time.

thanks for your help.

i am not to keen to try your fix yet as i first have to learn how to do it!

i am on a dektop to P4
my web cam works on cheese but not with camorama.

no sound or picture out on skype. (messages work! ) i can hear callers.

the video device shows as usb camera but wont do test.

the sound devices for microphone and speaker show as PulseAudio
local server, with no other options.

i may try first with more recent mint and ubuntu as i have discs here.

no big deal, i will persevere, thanks again.

I understand. It can be a little daunting. Try this...

Open Terminal
Copy this = LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l-
1compat. so skype
Paste (right click and select paste( this into the Terminal and hit enter.
Skype will start.
Check your Skype Video settings. If you can see yourself, it's working.
Call someone and test it.
Come back here and let us know if it did the trick.

i saw your reply while playing on kanotix,

woah, skype already on the live cd, only had to figure out y=z on the foreign kb layout i s'pose and i could talk on skype and hear crystal clear, from the box, thumps up kanotix.

but i could not reply from there, could not find where the "@" was on my new kb to login to tm!

but thanks i will try your suggestion and let you know.

I note that TM isn't allowing me to post this correctly:

LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l-
1compat. so skype

Please note. There is NO "-" symbol between the V4I1 & the compat. so But there IS a space. Check the link if you're unsure.

geek_zak410 June 12, 2010, 6:06 pm

he knows about motors, diesel and all too, can fix them. do u?

but kanotix, first try 4 me,
where on mint, in skype i had no option to pick a mic from, i had a list to choose on kanotix so i said yes about it being very good to detect hardware;
mind you i am no tech.

i do have firefox, since recently, chrome is default though, does that make any dif? cheers
geek_badcam June 12, 2010, 6:13 pm

Prob not. I was just going to suggest, that if this works for you, to then go to that link I provided and search for (Ctrl-F):

Skype + video + ubuntu 9. 10 32 bits + system solution

Follow those instructions to make it permanent. Each $ represents a copy and paste into the terminal. Ignore the $ just copy the rest, paste and hit enter. Ignore the Bash Script part but enter the last line into the Terminal which is this:

sudo chmod 755 /usr/bin/skype

and that should be it. Every time you start Skype, your video should be fine. I hope.

It's just NOT fair! Life was so much simpler when all I knew was Windows. Too much choice. I thought I was cured of my indecisiveness... now I'm not so sure.

Darn! It's been bugging me all day!

Last night I made a bunch of Bread Crumb covered Lasagne and broccoli squares. Over baked to perfection. Even if I did make them myself, they were de-lish! Even at lunch time, I thinking to myself "I'm sure I made extra". So, I go to make dinner tonight and what do I find...

... I forgot to take what was left, out of the oven. Or, at least I put them back in there and forgot about them. I usually leave it all on the bench to cool down for freezing. Darn! What a waste.

would be great if Firefox came with a kiwi dictionary, sick of underlines and the only option is American spelling.
geek_badcam June 12, 2010, 8:08 pm
#41
There's a UK dictionary and an Aussie one. I use the UK one and just Add to Dictionary as required. There may well be an NZ one. There is for TB.

https://addons. mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/browse/type:3

You can even add them straight into FF. Right-click on a misspelled word. Choose Languages/Add Dictionary. That's also an easy way of choosing your pre-installed Dictionary of choice.
geek_bidda2 June 12, 2010, 8:13 pm
#43
You can always right click and choose to add the word to the dictionary. Otherwise you can install the Australian dictionary which I imagine is good for kiwi
https://addons. mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3099/

EDIT: Hadn't seen the previous posts :/
