If you have one of those chipset/screen combinations that doesn't corrrectly report EDID, it's going to not correctly report EDID no matter what distro you install.

And this is SO EASY to get around; just create a basic xorg.conf and tell it what resolution you want. Randomly trying different distros in the hope that one of them will magically work is just retarded.

This might also help;

You might want to contact AuckLUG and see if you can get help from someone with more experience (if you were in Hamilton we have a 'saturday workshop' every month for this kind of thing)

Fair enough, but Mint was suggest by me as it would be easier for the OP to get around and no one was sure as to just how the OP had installed the Nvidia drivers in Ubuntu. At least with Mint it's pretty straight forward.

Mint and ubuntu's "restricted drivers" are the same thing, last I checked.

I've run into similar problems before. . the drivers are fine, it's just that Xorg isn't reading the monitor's supported resolutions correctly.

There's two easy ways around this; tell xorg where to get the correct information (from /proc) so that it can make intelligent choices of resolution for itself, or just force xorg to use a mode you know the monitor supports. Either solution works.

I don't disagree and yes the restricted drivers are the same. No one knew just how borked the OP's Ubuntu install was. A clean slate was required. She could have reinstalled Ubuntu afresh, but from my Gn00be experience, I felt it was better to suggest she try an easier and more friendly install. Mint. For the sake of repeating myself, he had to reinstall just to be sure and if she need to do that, why not an easier Distro.

Just so we're clear, 'he' :) Am in the process of getting rid of Mint and loading Ubuntu back on so I can work on that. It seems to be a common problem with out a very common fix... thanks for all the help so far team. We'll get there in the end!

Section "Module"
Load "glx"

Section "Device"

Thats xorg.conf just after I have installed the Driver.

I now have full acceleration (with some tearing and a few little buggy things) but visual effects have been enabled. I know that as soon as I restart, I will have to edit xorg.conf all over again. How can I keep it like this?

Once you've edited the xorg.conf it really should never be overwritten. But if you're inclined to crack an egg with a sledgehammer...

sudo chattr +i /etc/X11/xorg.conf
