#1 | It is an interview a cousin did on camcorder of my grandmother's life (who has since passed). I used a sony dvd recorder to create a dvd copy from the VHS.
As the audio is very poor mostly barely audible I'd like to add subtitles. I kinda assumed there would be a program I could use to open the dvd on my laptop and add the subtitles. But having never ventured into video editing much before I'm wondering if that was a bit of an assumption.
Is there a program/editor or tool that I could use to add subtitles? I mean, of course there is, but does anyone reccomend one for my circumstances, preferably free? I've got standard windows movie maker, media centre, nero, and broadband.
Your help would be greatly appreciated :-)

#2 | do you have nero? There are a bunch of small programs which will help you make a subtitle file, (its just a text file set out in a certain way) hopefully nero will allow you to import it with the video file. |

#4 | | I have an untested, at this point, a video capture card that fits an PCI slot in a Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition computer. I will sell it for $25. 00(self promotion denied at this point). I have just aquired these cards and intend to auction them once tested ok. I am using an identical card in my computer to convert VHS tapes to DVD with no noticeable difference in the quality of the video or the audio. With a dual RCA to 2. 5mm(maybe 3. 5mm, can measure) audio cable, a Composite Video cable and a TV in/out cable (Ithink it may be) to the VHS from the Video card and I can show you what to do. I don't do alot of VHS to DVD conversion but think it is very reasonable DVD. If you still have the VHS I recommend this setup. From what I have seen auctioned here on TM it is the cheapest and quickest, maybe 2 hours to have a DVD of the video tape. It has been my intention to auction the tested cards here with this recommendation soon. |

#5 | No thanks olack - I have no need for that.
Has anyone used this program or can reccomend something similar? http://subtitlecreator. sourceforge.net/SubtitleCreatorHomepa ge.html
I hate to risk downloading it without seeing some reviews, in case it comes along with nasties :-o |

#7 | thanks, I'm actually trying to convert to a windows movie maker compatible format(AVI). Movie maker doesn't want to know about it though. crashing nicely on every import attempt. Just doing another conversion attempt in WMV - perhaps it'll like a microsoft version better, but i'm not holding my breath.
But if I can't get that to work I'll download the above and give that a go. |

#8 | | Subtitle Workshop is the best one I've used adding subtitle to a movie with alot of useful tools like syncing the subs with the movie and font format like outline, color and shadow effects |

#9 | | NCH something... . , it is free but do not know if it can do subtitles. I use it for vhs to dvd converting. It is great and no noticeable loss of quality.
