Toshiba Vista Laptop Freezes on Startup

Hi - I'm not sure if this is a memory or not enough hard drive problem (or other). I recently bought an ipod & copied songs from CDs & another MP3 player onto it using the desktop at home. I then loaded itunes onto laptop and left it converting songs. Now each time I try to turn laptop on it it freezes after the small MS slider does its thing. I have tried going to a previous saved point using a restore programme that loads before windows splash screen but it also freezes after I've selected a date. Would a system restore in safe mode fix this? I'm presently at work & laptop is at home but I'll have a bash at it tonight & can plead for your assistance then from my desktop. I also have the recover cds made before Xmas. Not sure which step to take firstAny advice?

Home now with laptop. Went into safe mode and ran hard drive diagnostic. Have taken digital photos of any windows. Got a window: System Recovery Options saying following startup will be repaired; Name: {bootmgr], Identifier: [blah blah], startup options added: Vista (recovered), Partition = C" 104206mb and will save copy of current boot fig as C:\Boot\BCD. Backup. 0002. I went to command prompt and lots of files loaded, but now frozen on win\sys32\driver\crcdisk. sys. So here I am for help if possible please for my next step or advice ... .

Did you try chkdsk /f?

you need to run a diagnostic program as supplied by the hard drive manufacturer NOT some microsoft thing.

This will test the drive to see if theres any electrical/mechanical faults ... ... ... ... ... . DO IT.

oh and it WONT be a 'toshiba' hard drive... ... you'll either need to check the bios for information or pull the drive out of the machine and take a look ... ... ... it'll be seagate/hitachi/western digital etc etc... ... . .

HDD is WDC WD1200BEVS-26UST0(S1) - looking now on Western Digital website for diagnostic program

Not sure I've done this right or not sorry - from Western Digital website have burnt Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for DOS (CD) file Diag504fCD. iso to CD. Changed boot order to CD in Bios. Turn computer on, Toshiba splash screen come up with F2 or F12 (I ignore now), goes to a cursor blinking on blank screen & can hear CD running. Website says I should see some options (quick, extended etc test) but this did not appear and it went the windows slider bar then froze on a blank screen. Turn off and restarted & did all the same but this time after windows slider bar got Sys Recovery Options box, chose repair, got another box saying "Windows found problems with comp's startup options, wanna apply repairs? " Said yes and another box says "Failed to save startup options". Close that & Sys Recovery Options box there with Select Operating system but nothing listed in window, click load drivers button, box says Add Drives with message "insert installation media for device & click OK to select driver, Ok takes me to the open files box where the file type it wants is "Setup Information" with the window containing System, Public (both appear empty) & Computer, which has HDD (3):C drive, E toshiba system volume with a Sources folder that says no items match. There's also a X Boot drive with folders Program Files, Sources, Users & Windows. Nothing in these windows match the Type of File option or are empty. Laptop sitting with here at work with box still open. Sorry to be sop long winding but if I offer as much info, you may be able to assist me or advice me it needs to go in the bin or to computer hospital. By the way in my next life I'm coming back as the person who designs the CD plastic wrapper and shoot the previous designer.

Any advice for my next step from anyone please?

I think from reading that, that for some reason the CD isn't booting. Are you able to try the cd in another drive (without commiting any changes etc) to see if it boots? .

how did you go about burning the iso to cd ?
and what burning program did you use ?
geek_rushka July 21, 2010, 1:30 pm

Using work's XP, initially dragging the iso file to CD but have just reburnt a copy using their burner NTI CD & DVD Maker 7. I just went to try this CD in laptop and bugger me dead its had a message saying it wanted to run a Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool (no CD in tray). What the heck I said, nothing can get worse can it? Says its running test pass 1 of 2 and 44% complete so I'm off to osteopath appt for an hour or so as I my tense neck is worse today for some reason!

Hi jcmp - I'm a bit toey about putting the disc into work's networked comp - I may be braver after the osteopath if the scan above finds nothing the the CD still won't work after being re-burnt properly.

Back again - and no message on laptop to say thanks for the scan. Same problem happening that the iso file on CD won't work. Will this file work from a USB stick (in case I didn't burn it properly)?

As CD image appears not to be working I download ISO Recorder (a Windows XP freeware utility that uses native Windows XP functions to write images to a CD) and burnt the Diag504fCD. iso to another disc. Worked this time and eventually got a screen message:

DLGDIAG 5. 05f - Data Lifeguard Diagnostics
NO DRIVE FOUND
ERROR/STATUS CODE: 0120

Hit any key - which takes me to an A: prompt

Help please - now what ?

you DONT 'drag an iso onto the cd' and expect it to work that's not how its done

Hi drcspy - I've downloaded Acronis True Image & printed the manual. I need to read what to do with it as this is so new to me - back after 100 pages of reading. I've got files on external drive & will take everything home soon-ish.

"Download the Data Lifeguard Tools software (Acronis True Image WD Edition and user manual and the WD diagnostic tool) and follow the instructions provided to complete the installation. "

this is the part you need in order to run that diagnostic

Hi again - sorry for the delay in feedback and closure on this. Been busy with work and still finding time to finish reading the Acronis True Image manual. From what I have read it appears that this is more useful as a proactive tool rather than a "fix after the meltdown" tool. I took the easy way out and took the hard drive out, checked it for any data I wanted off it, and used the rescue discs for an "out of box" restore. Laptop working fine now. Thanks again for you patience and suggestions.

Just remembered - It does appear that ISO Recorder does actually work at burning the ISO info onto a disc - just right click the ISO file and select "copy file to CD"

and the finished product is what ? a cd with a . iso file on it ? or a cd with LOTS of files on it ?

and you STILL need to run a diagnostic on the harddrive

Hi Drcspy - got a cd with lots of files on it that ran the diagnostic, which gave me the result in post #17 above. Now that the laptop is up and running I will do another diagnostic on the hard drive before I start using it again - will try to get onto it tonight using the Acronic True Image. Don't feel as scared now. Thanks again.

Hi again - I've done the diagnostic using Data Lifeguard Diagnostic Tool (in windows this time) and got a green tick with no errors, and all green ticks in the SMART part of the tool, so I'm assuming that its Ok to use that laptop again?

I thought initally that the Acronis True Image programme was a diagnostic but its more about backups and image captures so I'll make a system backup using that.

Quite a good imaging tool I use is clonezilla (http://clonezilla.org/)which you can use to take an image of a drive (I do it at the fresh install) then if you have a meltdown you can image onto the new drive back to a fresh install then run the data backups on the machine to put all the user docs and other data back on. There's quite a few good free backup tools for daily data type backups floating around.

Thanks jcmp - I've just read the 100 page manual for WD Acronis True Image and its all fresh in my head, and have already installed the programme so will run with that. If anything cocks up I can growl at Western Digital LOL. I just heard that they have 3 year warranty on hard drives & my problem baby is only 18 months.
