I am looking for cheap webhosting. Can anyone recommend anyone? I have 2 php databases that I want to run on the site.

I did do a google searchbut the cheapest one I found appeared to be a copy of another hosting website but with different prices. The third one I looked at appeared not be insterested in copyright so looked suspect to me

php is not a database for starters. php is server side scripting. Chances are you are using mySQL databases in conjunction with your php scripts. Might help your googling if you get your terminology correct.

www.dreamhost.com are good for low-traffic websites, cheap too! You can find a few coupon codes around the place for money off or free stuff.

It is just a couple of phpbb forums. I own the domain name. Not sure if to close the whole site or not.

I assumed these forums are currently hosted somewhere so are you after cheaper hosting or what?
geek_najopito July 25, 2010, 3:04 pm

Yes. I end up paying $15 a month roughtly
geek_radiowaves July 25, 2010, 3:13 pm

Yeah you could pay quite a bit less than that. Could be a bit of a mission moving the forums to new hosting.

I have done it before I am sure I can do it again. I should revamp the site.

PhpBB these days for backup and restores.

I have had the site a while so back then was reasonable but prices have fallen

Cheap often equals poor support and poor reliability and overloaded servers with thousands of other websites. You should never go for the cheapest, becuase they will be cutting costs somewhere, and not all hosting is the same. Instead you should be looking for reasonable priced, and using a company that has been around for a while, and if you want good support, a NZ provider is probably essential. Contact me if you want me to email you the one I use, email is my username plus gmail address.

www.hostgator.com

Great hosting, uptime, and live - professional - chat.

The problem is that they oversell, and upsell too through their control panel. Anything that is advertised as unlimited is just incorrect, as there is no such thing, as there are always limits. I had a clients site there, which was fine for about a year, but it got slower and slower, which I suspect was due to the server becoming more and more full with accounts. When I told them about the slowness, they tried to sell me a VPS plan, saying the site (which was a joomla one) wasn't suitable for shared hosting.

hostgator.com

+100

Never any major issues in about 5 yrs - after APALLING service/support costs with NZ hosts.

Ignore the upsell - (like the Shell station "would you like any of the specials of the day? "; "No thanks") - try the LIVE support that is truly live.

Carry on.

There are some excellent NZ hosts, but you do pay for what you get. Sounds like you used one of the bad ones, which like everything, you get good and bad ones. The best way to find a host is by word of mouth, not by google advert.

Why not get a Static IP and host your own sites.

That company is terrible. There are a bounty of threads on Geekzone (or used to be) about horror stories involving this business. Would stay well clear.

Only problem I've had with them is with initial domain registration. They do have shocking support but if you know what you're doing, their uptime is 2nd to none.

dont need a static IP, dynamic works sweet with and updater, do that here at home.

I don't understand how the "Upsell" that you complain about is annoying. Perhaps if you're on the cheapest plan - I don't know.

I have a Baby Croc plan ($15nzd/mo) and it's outstanding. There are some Ads on the cPanel page for VoIP and no other upselling that is intrusive. Everything works fine, and the speed is great.

The live chat is brilliant, and perhaps you have just had a bad experience, as I notice you posting the same comment about upselling in any hosting thread.

Yes those 'VOIP ads are called upselling, but there are also a lot of other ones they include if you view their demo. When you buy a hosting account from a cmpany you shouldn't be subjected to any of that, as you pay money, and you shouldn't have to put up with advertising. CPanel by default doesn't include any advertising. I am just mentioning those are the costs when you purchase from some cheap hosts, such as hostgator and godaddy, they make their money from the ad on services they try to sell you.

Having used 6 NZ hosts before I went to RoutHost (rubbish) and then to HG - and all the NZ hosts were "recommended"... not for me.

I ALWAYS try to support NZ but...

I like hostgator
stay away from servage, I have only had bad experiences with them

Most of them are just resellers anyway. I would stick with NZ hosting. I have about 7 domain names and hosting with Hosting Direct, good pricing and the severs have never been down yet. None of them are static sites either.
