Best cd/dvd reader writer for computer

#1 | | hey I have a compaq persario S4040An which is about 7 yrs old, the dvd/cd reader writer died in it about 4 weeks ago and I am wondering what is the best one to get - I need to burn my cd's that are all stored on itunes and I want to copy some dvds - the only prob is I am unsure on what the best cd/dvd writer reader is to get - it's not a slim line it's just an ordinary writer in a hard drive any help would be good! ! ! #2 | you want to burn the music so you can listen to it on a cd player or just get the files off the computer ? [perhaps for an upgrade]

#3 | | Just go some mainstream brand samsung or whatever it doesn't matter to much. 7 years old I'd say you'll need an IDE DVDRW, so just don't get mixed up with a SATA one. |

#4 | I recently had a similar problem with the DVD writer on my Compaq. The motherboard has 4 unused SATA connectors, so I replaced the original IDE DVD with a new Samsung SH-S223C SATA one. Just had to get a power adapter cable, and a SATA cable.
Added bonus is that the small round SATA cable is a lot smaller, and neater, than the horrible flat wide IDE cable. |

#5 | | Some really old machines had the sata on a seperate chip, not the main chipset, and they would often have issues with sata atapi devices like optical drives. |
